@lenelljeter2 The good old days! I like R&B and soul stations, but now they don't even play anything remotely rock or blues sounding, and rock and roll and R&B used to be hand and hand, i guess you can say their sister genres. At my local station, they rarely play many white soul artists besides the usuals: Robin Thicke and Teena Marie. Not that theyre bad or anything but they aren't the only ones. They don't play Hall & Oates at all. And on top of that...they play the same things all the time!
@Jaheartsjonas Given an either/or choice I can understand why those stations play a Lakeside or Al B Sure or The Family Stand or Groove Theory tune instead of a tune from David Bowie or Hall & Oates. I'll bet that Johnnie Taylor almost never is played on "true oldies" stations unless the tune is "Disco Lady" (which is arguably underappreciated on those stations).
@Jaheartsjonas That is 50 years of music from excellent black R&B performers. It was a lot easier to include songs from nonblack performers in the 70s and 80s when there was only 20 to 25 years of prior music to choose from.
@Jaheartsjonas Meanwhile, I do think that at least the "old school" and "classic R&B" stations could work in the occassional song from Hall & Oates, Culture Club, and other nonblack perfomers that have had hits on R&B radio and have appeared on Soul Train but who are not Robin Thick or Teena Marie. This is a bigger challenge than it sounds because these stations have mostly 50 years (since the 1960s) of music to choose from and play during a 24 hour day, 7 day week.
@Jaheartsjonas Examples: Erica Badu, Musique, Donnell Jones, Anthony Hamilton, Angie Stone. For every Usher/Beyonce that does get played on pop radio there are 10 Donnell Joneses/Angie Stones that don't. On the other hand, Fergie, Britney Spears, Nelly Furtado & Justin Timberlake have legit contemporary R&B songs but they have all the pop station support and airplay that they need and they can be very successful without support from black/soul radio stations.
@Jaheartsjonas I interpret that to mean my local R&B station.
On the subject of white & other nonblack performers that do not get their R&B style songs played on black/soul radio stations in the 2000s, consider the fact that these stations have always supported a legitimate need to sustain black perfomers that have excellent talent & musical products but are not likely, for lots of reasons, to have their tunes played in pop stations/hot hits stations or any other stations.
You may find that it is worth the time to take a look and listen at the song lists that have been posted to Itunes Ping that meld together rhythmically & stylistically compatible early/mid 80s R&B/funk songs and early/mid 80s synth pop/new wave songs. Lots of music that was either forgotten or not ever learned of but was very enjoyable or would be very enjoyable if it was rediscovered or discovered for the 1st time by people that enjoy this type of music. People like you?
I have researched these music categories for the past 9 years
and I have rediscovered tunes I had forgotten about or I discovered
new tunes that totally deserved the time it took to discover them.
In Itunes Store or Itunes Ping if you use the search terms "electrofunk" (as a single word) or "80s funk" the search result shall produce several lists that have "electrofunk" or "80s funk" in the playlist name in the "Playlist" category at the low left corner of the search result.
These lists have songs that (1) you may have heard before and enjoyed but forgotten or (2) songs that you may enjoy now but you have not heard before. These lists also include album cuts that were not released as singles and songs from lesser known yet solid groups/soloists such as Fatback, Kashif, Laid Back, D Train, Boys Don't Cry, and Dynasty.
I've been listening to this song since I could barely walk and still don't know all the words to it, but I have never forgotten this video. xD Mental institutions can be fun.
@halonut100 It's not a mall, it's a mental institution. In an ancient interview, Daryl and John explained it matches the dark psychological overtone of the song. :)
I had this 45 (and album, too). I liked this one better than "I Can't Go for That", though obviously "I Can't Go For That" was a bigger hit... This song was kind of freaky/spooky/whatever....
Still have the Private Eyes Album with this phenomenal classic.... I used to hear this on WMMR in Philly on the bus on the way to soccer camp in the summer of '82 in South Jersey........
Loved this duo - they were soooo good. This was a personal favorite of mine. I used to play their albums over and over - they were that good. I never tired of their sound. Good to have them back in this format as well. Thanks for a great post. They weren't called "blue eyed soul" for nothing!!! Thank you.
KICK ASS pop music at it's best. I had this album on vinyl from the early 80's and completely forgot about this song over the years. Just heard it again last week for the first time in ages surfing in the iTunes store. Once again, it's in my music collection, but in a the new format of the electronic/computer age. Although the song is almost 30 years old, it still sounds as fresh and kick-ass as ever. It could get a dead person's feet moving!
Hey thanks whoever posted this video - I remember this song from watching Channel 69 video music in Atlanta back in 1984 or so. I haven't been able to find this song since then, so thanks again!
I never get tired of this song. To this day, I still think of this song when I see an airport on TV. LOL. But I really love this song. Too bad it was the last single released and therefore barely made it into the top 40 because I think it was top 10 material. Much better than Maneater.
Aw man! Somebody did a remix. LOL. The intro is the single version and then it abruptly hits the album version. It's better than the previous version that was on here though. Thanks. I've only seen this on TV once on a show on MSN (Modern Satellite Network) back in the early 80s. The network no longer exists.
@catrod24 Summer, 1982, WMMR in Philly played this song..... My favorite Philly boys and video before the freshman year of high school school in South Jersey!!!
@ladyparrotluvr This is my top 5 Hall & Oates song! I've seen them so many times live and they NEVER play this song! Black radio and the black clubs in Detroit used to JAM this song!
What I remembered about this song was Camp Pendleton @ the movement center. I had just bought the albulm and wore my walkman out playing it! Thanks for the add!
Ooh, great quality. I just watched it in lesser quality, but that's okay. I'm here now and enjoying this. As I commented under the other vid, this was my jam back in the day and it still is.

"Your Imagination" got to # 45 on the R&B Chart in 1982.
In the early/mid 80s a lot of funk-ish music crossed from the R&B chart to the US / UK pop charts & vice-versa.
Melba Moore's "Love's Comin At Ya" reached #15 on the UK pop chart in 1982.
David Bowie's "Let's Dance" got to # 14 on the US R&B chart in 1983.
A few more examples, the US R&B Chart: "Shock the Monkey", "Miss Me Blind" "Out of Touch."
