@ninja6kid, like most of my engines, they are made from scrap materials picked up from here and there, nothing is thrown away until it has no further use. It most probably cost me (mainly for the fasteners) about 2 to 3 pounds.
So does this engine have a specific application, is it more efficient than other 90 degree drive mechanisms, does it actually serve a realistic purpose and application?
This is an engine made to show the concept of how the elbow joint worked.
You could have one input, and the output would be at 90 degrees to the input, but the output could be around a full 360 degree arc if required, with the centre of the arc being the centre on the input shaft.
I bet this will be made of tough material on the elbow connecting part if this has to be used in line shaft. Is this really an engine or only a mechanism? I am confused on the term engine.
that thing looks like it's about ready to fly apart! not by it's construction since it looks beautifully constructed but because it's moving so fast! what would happen if you tried to run it on steam?
Just wondering how much torque you can get out of that...It looks like its going quite fast but ...maybe a gear conversion will help...its for a college class. Im Studying mechanical engineering
As described above, this engine is a by-product of experiments and theories of Hobson's coupling, and you are perfectly right, it has has hardly any power generation properties of it's own.
I guess the loads it can traverse over the 90 degrees is extremely limited, hence we do not see this in real life. Only good enough to spin a little fly wheel.
It is actually not my design, I just made it from basic plans.
But it is to demonstrate what is called a 'Hobsons Coupling', which allows a drive to turn thru 90 degrees without the use of gears.
Imagine the flywheel being replaced by a shaft, as the shaft is turned, the one at 90 degrees to it also turns because of the way the 90 deg couplings move.
It is one of the most baffling engines when seen running, but one of the simplest in design. 6 cylinders and pistons only 5 moving parts.
es impresionante su invento , creo que funciona con aire , exelente para aplicar a infinidad de articulos del hogar o de trabajo , tal ves hasta vehiculos , lo felicito
I believe i understand. It is a neumatic motor an there are 3 valves an they go up and down by the air energy. This movement impels the pulley which there is in other rotational plane, so this sistem could be very good to change the spinning direction without a complex transmition of gears.
What a lovely little engine, truly genious. I have been researching model engines for one of my projects i have to make later on in my apprenticeship. i was wondering if you have any plans/info you could possibly send me? please get back to me.

Reminds me of an axial piston pump, but this seems simpler.
ekpil2000 9 months ago
@ekpil2000 Similar, but I think the axial pump works on a swashplate principle.

thats an amazing design, id probably overload mine if i had it just to se how much it could take:/

First, wouldn't this technically be a 'motor' an not an 'engine' since it is powered by an outside source?
Second, how does the efficiency and strength of this elbow joint compare to, say a 90-degree bevel gear?

I wonder how it would react if the driver becomes the driven and I can not imagine what would be the future application of this mechanism.
noudge 2 years ago
If you read the previous posts, it does in fact explain why this engine was created.
In earlier times, it was used in many applications, such as line shafts for driving machinery.

Beautiful. You're an excellent presenter too.
Say, I had no idea what I was looking at until the end, where it can be begun to be understood,
a bit!
How about another viddy of this engine with an intro telling us how the motions go, and what's inside the elbow cylinder?
Thanks!

G'day. have just about finished my own engine.
It only "SEEMS" to run in reverse. You must suply "air" to the other side. Just being a smart bugger, but bloody nice, otherwise.
