  • BEST BAND IN THIS CENTURY - natural, in my opinion.... :-D

    Wikingo

  • Oh YES !

  • Comment removed

  • Good to see Timothy Spall on keyboards ;-)

    Great song and great performance.

  • Super

  • Fuck! I have this album in vinyl that I got back in 1997 and GOING FOR ONE IS YES!

  • i think this is the only group that has no cover bands. these muscians are so individual they would be hard to copy.. Top rank.

  • Amazing song, POWERFUL !!!!!!!!!

  • yet another weird version of YES....1977 studio version rocked...

  • GFTO was the WORST produced album in history. So much so this sounds better. I can only think Steve howe had a coma when he recorded it. Please re record it. (btw I adore YES)

  • @mensamoo Wonderous stories. You silly, silly person.

  • @EragonFiresword eh? keep taking the drugs....

  • @mensamoo That's fighting talk - I totally disagree and find your post offensive. The production on Going For The One is outstanding and the album is an absolute landmark. The GFTO and Awaken tracks bring tears to my eyes to this day.

  • @randaldavies Oh be fair. I don't doubt the music is excellent. Your loyalty is admirable but sometimes the very best have errors. The recording is harsh. And yes, it brings tears to my eyes....

  • Do caralho!

  • The original is in E key, this is in Db, three semitone under.

  • Merveilleux : Quand j'entends ça j'suis aux anges !!!

  • can anyone put the album version along with survival and other missing studio tracks of yes ofcourse? please

  • can someone put going for the one audio surviva and other songs which are missing? please

  • they were my favourite a lot of years ago, but I couldn't forget it

I havent hear they about 30 years, it was wonderfull

Why nobody makes similar musik today?

Maybe a lot of people need it.

  • my favourite YES song

  • I lke this one by yes, they are a great band!!

  • Jon in a white kaftan.. not his best look!!!

The music's great though.. keep it up guys!!

  • yes i do love yes.

  • Thank god the "TV-Evangelist look" never took on in rock!

    One of my favourite Yessongs.

  • Amazingly tight and clearly a recent rendition of the song - love it!

  • Man...they still had it in '96! Jon sounds great.

  • The sound is very good.

  • I'd say the lower key just makes the song even more beautiful. Yes forever.

  • god created man to listen to yes

  • @fatbloke010164 wonderful what you wrote i agree intirely!!!!

  • No, "City of Love" is their heaviest...

  • The greatest band of progressive rock in the world

  • acho que esses caras são a encarnação dos Deuses da musica, como pode um quinteto ser tão perfeito?simplesmente amo essa banda!!!

  • I had a 200 yamaha when this was out! What a bike! What a song!

  • I adore Squire's vocals on this. I've realised his vocals, espec on this, are not so much harmonies as actual counter-melodies in their own right. Although I've listened and sung along for years, I never noticed what he was doing on the actual "going for the one" line. It's brilliant, and perfectly mxed here to sit *just* behind Jon's voice.

  • The original goes in E but now days they are playing it in D 'cause Jon can't sing as high as he used to. Too bad... he has the perfect voice!!!

  • I remember learning all the lyrics to this one and became an avid YES fan only by default. In the 70's, my pop songs were always drowned out by the sounds of YES being played by my brother on his stereo. In the end I gave up listening to mine when he was home and decided if you can't beat them, join them, which I did. I was soon hooked on the likes of ELP, GENESIS, QUEEN, PINK FLOYD, RICHIE BLACKMORE'S RAINBOW and so forth.... Hence, you should see my record/cd collection, I should be locked up!

  • Que de souvenirs en cette fin de 70's où tout n'était que prog (pink floyd, yes, genesis...) et volupté.

    J'adorais cette chanson.

  • brilliant! one of the best yes songs. Jon does sing a little lower but i think he sounds more relaxed

  • I missed the Tormato tour, I was so close to going. But my friend gave his extra ticket to a girl who promised to sleep with him for it. She went to the bathroom after the concert, and ditched his ass. Afterwards, said he should have gave the ticket to me. She was a bitch to him the whole concert. LOL

Got to love the late 70's. "Going for the One" was one of the hardest songs to get the lyrics right. Even with them printed on the album sleeve.

  • hilarious. The girl sitch, obvs. Your friend learnt an important lesson that night, I trust. Hope you made a Yes show at some point.... lifechanging moments

  • What an Ultimate JAM!!!!

  • Way back in the day......I went to see Yes play rather attend my High School Graduation......It's all about realizing what's important and what is so much hooey.......Now years later I am still impressed with Yes! Thanks for the great Post!

  • good choice

  • Wow this sounds so weird to me in this key! Unfortunately, I was "cursed" and classified as having "perfect pitch". But you can play in any key you want, to accommodate the vocals.

  • Chris Squire looks as if he's just come off stage from doing panto! lol

Love this version of the song, has more meat than the orginal on the album!

  • Ok y'all, how about south side of the sky from Fragile

  • That's awesome as well!

  • This has always been my favorite Yes song, from my favorite over-all Yes album. Just pumped me up more than any others, which isn't to say others weren't jams also. The songs on this CD were in perfect order to create an over-all feel that made this CD a great beginning to end listen. Others previous could test the patience of more casual fans, even some less than casual fans. This was a perfect blend of older Yes and the more contemporary sound they ended with.

  • The key change is bad. However, this is probably one of the greatest songs Yes ever wrote. It's so positive and musically ambitious. As if Yes was taken over by a honky tonk band on acid.

  • These guys rule!

  • 2 good

  • Timeless,awesome ROCK .

  • old rock stars never die they just sing in a lower key :-)

    like Rush and 2112

  • @Larryk12308 Anderson can still hit those high notes.

  • @Larryk12308 Pretty sure Geddy Lee doesn't transpose any of the rush songs lower for him to sing in his older age....

  • Boy, It's all excellent, but close to the edge gets my vote. I didn't notice that they stepped it down a key!

  • CTTE is the best album ever made

but this album is excellent too, why are they doing this song in D?

  • Jon would probably collapse a lung trying to sing this song in it's original key .

  • yeah, it got a bit weird on D

  • what about Heart of the Sunrise?

  • I'd consider the Relayer stuff as their heaviest.

    Gates of... and Soundchaser.

  • And couple dozen others... Yes made so much great music that 'listing the best songs' simply doesn't make sense...

  • your the best i love for 30 years

  • What is this, a step down at least?

  • down a tone, yes--in D.

  • I think that South side of the Sky is the heaviest song, though there are moments when the piano of Rick relax the situation... the worm in Starship Trooper also is heavy but the disolution is beautiful, and the classic Heart of the Sunrise also

And don`t forget machine Messiah from Drama

  • I would think that Parallels is pretty heavy. The bass line is amazing and Howe uses a Fender strat to good effect. Given that the previous song on the album is Turn of the Century it shows that Yes are a band of immense talent and varied genres. No one trick ponies!

  • Outstanding

    What muscianship.

  • a brilliant album..

  • Totally agree.

  • Anyone who thinks this is their "heaviest" piece has clearly never heard Gates of Delirium! Guaranteed to keep me awake driving in the car.

Stiil great stuff - they are wonderful musicians.

  • @chasedspleen Yes ,this is a great song, but heavier?

  • what year was this?

  • 1996

  • Going for the One is the eighth studio album by British progressive rock band Yes. It was released in 1977

  • @MCSin2007 Going for the One is the eighth studio album by Yes.Released in 1977

  • This is good enough for heaven.

    Peace to all!

  • My cats freak out when I play this tune! They also flip out when I play "Stranglehold" by Ted... Oddly enough, "Cat Scratch Fever" does nothing for them...

  • As pleasent as Close to the Edge...Nose

  • The intro sounds like 10cc :)

  • Yes do Country and Western... with an acid MDMA tinge.... now, that's what I call music!!!

  • interested composition

  • Just look and listen

  • I'm 42 years of age and have dug yes since I was not quite 10, and dun mind NE incarnation thereof!

    Timothy

    :o)

  • He definetivaly is singing lower tone! As much as the music...

  • why yes is so good?

  • Because every one of them learned their craft before the concept of style over substance took hold of popular culture. That's why no one covers their songs. The one cover of "I've Seen All Good People" by Shaw Blades stopped before the hard part.

  • seal010101:

    You got it.

  • chris looks like Han Solo.

  • Best of Yes!

  • GREAT song..thanks for posting. Much lower key, you're right. Still sounds great.

  • One of the best songs, and still Going...

  • Just bought couple of Yes albums. Including this. Awesome band and song.

  • going for the one is my favorite YES album. 5 very strong songs that really showcase the talents of each member. i love whites approach to the drums on all 5 songs. i`m really not sure if bruford played on any of these songs if his more jazzy/progressive style would fit.

  • Oh yeah . . . . wait...... YES !!!!

  • YES!!!

    YES!!!

    YES!!!

    YES!!!

  • Awesome is right...

  • Steve Howe is the man. Is this geek in the DVD?

  • I'm just now getting into this album so I've been researching it lately. I think it's a strong piece but I wouldn't call it their heaviest. That would be more like "Machine Messiah", "Tempus Fugit" or maybe even "Shock to the System" off of Union, imo.

  • ya have a lot to learn, but those songs you mentioned aren't real Yes they're Yes light. check relayer, tales of topographic oceans, the yes album, for the real yes. the album that this is from --going for the one-- is probably one of their best.

  • Arguments about what is the "real" Yes are a huge waste of time.

I happen to know a lot about them (The Yes Album, Fragile, CTTE, and Relayer being my favorites) but I don't subscribe to the idea that there is a proper lineup as they've never had the same personnel for more than two albums in a row. I'm intrigued by the history and politics of the band but it's all Yes to me.

With that said, I think Drama is a solid album, I dislike ABWH, and I actually enjoy some of the 80's material.

  • You're right, it's a waste time b/c back THEN, all Yes has done after 'Going for the One' was considered, basically, garbage. Drama solid? C'mon, they only sound like Yes. Or Yes cover.

Cheers to all prog rock fans.

  • Well, that's definitely one opinion of many. To each his own.

  • Sure, but it's a fact that both, Yes and Genesis switched from prog rock to pop. And to me it's not 'apples and oranges' but 'apples and onions'.

  • im with you man. Anyone who likes owner of a lonely heart a lot, should listen to south side of the sky or Close to the edge, and then proceed to burn pictures of Trevor Rabin and Tony Kaye

  • Wow, I wouldn't be that drastic... lol. Every time I see here someone young and 'digging' prog rock it, kind of, amazes me, b/c I'm not sure if I got it if I were 20ish. Back then, we had so much time to 'digest' every album, listened to it many times. And that's the only way to understand this beautiful music. Yes and Genesis are still my 2 out 3 favourite bands.

    All best to you, tiimm56.

  • Wait a minute.. Tony Kaye was on part of Fragile and all of The Yes Album.

  • I was at this concert--blew me off my feet! Now i'm visiting concerts with my eldest son. That's just so great!

  • This is the ONLY major rock band of ALL TIME that never played a "power" chord!! :)

  • Interesting. Makes sense, good share Mitch.

  • First of all, I'm a GIGANTIC yes fan...and i love everything until topographic oceans, but not alot after...but this song is really fantastic. But it did make me laugh, because if you showed this video to someone who didn't know who yes was, and there wasn't any sound, then they would think it's like one of those christian-rock bands, because of what they're wearing and the cheesy camera fade-ins and whatnot

  • I admire your taste, Drummer. At your age, to get this old prog rock... but if you like their early stuff, you can't dismiss the whole album 'Going for the one', it's amazing. Esp. 'Awaken' - a beautie. Try it. Good luck.

To paghob - I thing that 'Owner of a Lonely Heart' was their 'peak' at the time. What they did was just so pathetic (by their standards). But the same happened to Genesis, Mike Oldfield... Unfortunately.

  • Yeah I would agree with your advice to Drummer. Arguably "Awaken" is the peak of the peak period. Was that after Topographic?? But as Owner was the beginning of the end of what we know YES to be so Knebworth was to Zeppelin. But do not blame the artists. Creativity at GENIUS level can only last do long.

  • Yes, The Tales was before. I had to check it b/c I was sure it (Tales) was their 'swan song'. At least sounds like one (had many critics, right? But I like it).

I think it wasn't so much about their 'genius dwindling' but the new, disco generation was too impatient to listen over and over to get the complexity of prog rock. They wanted something easy you can dance to...

Plus, there came punk, as the 'antidotum' to those 20 minute long suites they hated. It's a real shame. Cheers.

  • I know! It's like Mullet City!

  • awesome

  • Epic

  • I see Mr. Squire is utilizing his 8 string on this version.....just doesn't have the bite of the Ric.

  • This and Relayer are the HIGH POINTS in Yes's history!!!! The low point for those not too familiar with Yes is Owner of a Lonely Heart. I remember screaming with disbelief in my Uni digs upon first hearing Owner!!! Not sure they ever really recovered after that. But as they say all genius artists have a peak and then they subside.

  • good stuff

  • this is great stuff!! , the low point comment is unwarrented.

  • Low point? you're crazy!

  • How could an album with masterpieces such as Awaken and Turn Of The Century and another litle gem in Wondrous Stories could be a low point for ANY Prog band. My friend, I think you are really dazed AND confused..You need to elaborate a bit more if you are gonna say something like that....

  • And you got me confused as well, forgot to mention Parallels and the album's title, dude, YOU ARE CRAZY!!

  • Going For the One ......``tender timing .... rocing Rolling ``> ~``and we who stand no taller than the grasses`` And we who smoke the sweetest of grases !!!!!!!!

  • I love how they are all wearing regular clothes and anderson has his wizard costume on. so good!

  • lol, yeah. Yes was always wore the wierdest/ most awesome clothes.

  • Great song!! But if anyone thinks this is the "hardest" Yes song- check out "Machine Messiah"!!

  • Damn right, that's definately one of their hardest.

  • how about the gates of dellirium?

  • Also great Yes!!

  • gimme dat

  • What an amazing song, Going For The One, Philadelphia in 1977, JFK Stadium!!! Unfuckingincreditable!!!!..... my sisters were there..... I didn't see them until April, 1984.........

  • I would love to get stoned at a Yes concert! Just mellow relaxing music... no mosh pitting fighting nonsense... just enjoying a good buzz lol

  • I have been a lifelong fan of Yes, but have never seen them live. This is clearly lamentable given the power, clarity, projection and precision of this performance. Long may they continue to perform these rock masterpieces.

  • I saw Yes in 1977, stafford, best concert I've ever been to. Ever.

  • The breakdown after 4:24 has always been one of my favorite music pieces. That is not to demean the rest of the song but that portion always overwhelms me.

  • @chilliwhiggerE: This song as a whole usually gets me. I hear ya bro.

  • Yes I completely agree, it is the most perfect chord progression and way to end this great song

  • "overwhelms me"

    same here chilliwhiggerE

  • Here is the paul green school of rock doing Going for the One. I never heard the original until today. Jenny was only 15 when she sang this, and the year before she did it when she was 14. It's a tough song to sing. This is amazing seeing the wonderful and awesome Jon singing this. We love him a lot. He is such a gentleman, wonderful spirit, and so talented.

    craftyclaycat

  • effing incredible

  • Heaviest or not: one of the best songs ever!:) Yesss!:)

  • I've noticed that there's a lot of comments pertaining to this as Yes's "heaviest" song.I think "South Side of the Sky" was their "heaviest".Wakeman's piano break gave that song the dynamic contrast to make it even heavier.

  • Excellent...Rick Wakeman looks like Dr. Johnny Fever during this time frame.

  • LONG LIVE YESSSSSS

  • Just Yes!

  • Es acojonante!!!!!

  • Una de las mejores canciones de YES, para mi gusto. Saludos desde GDL

  • This isn't the heaviest Yessong... check out 'Machine Messiah' on 'Drama'!

  • That wasn't during the classic era though, which was unquestionably better than the Horn/ Downs time. Still, I agree with him that this isn't their heaviest work. Gates of Delirium is far more agressive. Still, this is an awesome song! LONG LIVE YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Its funny, in the Yes catalogue, with time, Going For the One has grown to be probably in their "top three albums" for me personally. Fragile and Relayer would be the other two.

  • Going for the One was one of my first albums ;-)

  • i was even born when this came out yet I love it, thanks to my Dad's record collection.

  • Going for the One is an amazing album, but in choosing their three best albums (at least for me), I would pick Close to the Edge instead. However, who can deny that Awaken is one of the band's absolute finest pieces of work.

  • I'm such a fan of Yes when they stretch the limits of machine (instruments) and man (writing/performing). I like Close to the Edge. I guess I've suffered from CTTE burnout. I think they actually got better even after CTTE. My other fav if I'm listing odd tracks is The Remembering From Tales. I think it's as good as anything from CTTE. In the end I want to support anyone who mines the catalogue!

  • A lot of people criticize Tales for being overblown, but I really think it features some of their best work. And for Jon to have based the lyrics of four epic-length songs on just one footnote is a simply incredible feat.

  • THE Yes are as the wine: getting older they play even still better...

  • remember when they played "in the round"?
