Great review. Shouldn't have dissed the chorus setting, as many of folks who buy this own a copy of Reach the Beach. The vibrato is "cheesy," not the chorus. Anyway, I liked your review.
Interesting little side note about this amp. It's used quite a bit by electric violinists. I own a vintage JC-120, and use it exclusively for violin. The clean sound and large speakers work extremely well in live settings. I've used it for about a dozen gigs now and can't imagine using something else.
@topdog2328 its also been used by The Cure, The Smiths, The Verve and Metallica amongst others... So yeah, maybe he could have looked at the different ways it could be used. How it handles external effects, long, held chords etc.
@MrZacharyFisher HOW MANY,HAVE YOU MADE!!! HOW MANY,HAVE YOU BEEN ON!!! NEVER SEEN YOU,ON YOUTUBE!!! SO HOW CAN YOU TALK,ABOUT HIM!!! AT LEASE HE'S ON A VIDEO!!! WHAT (ABOUT YOU)??? OH I KNOW, YOU'RE A BASEMENT,MUSICIAN!!! THAT'S (ALL) YOU WILL (EVER) BE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You don't understand what the JC-120 distortion knob really does. If you leave the distortion turned off, you get a very compressed soft tone which works well for straight ahead jazz but isn't particularly dynamic. If you turn the distortion on, but leave it at zero, you get a much more dynamic tone, where the amp responds to your playing. It is still very clean, but it feels more like a tube amp than a solid state amp.
Whenever I play this amp it's clean tone makes me go wow!!...really cuts through..evey1 shud try out this amp..coz it's worth trying and it's worth buying....
this chorus IS cheesy? your cheesy. without that chorus on yours leads you're nothing pal. This guy isn't self involved, playing all over the place like rockers do on other youtubes. So, I have to ask, are you referring to the guy in the video or another youtuber? If the guy in the video, then what do you mean?
Stupid question, but here goes : Could a second player be on another channel without interfering with the tone or settings on your channel? I know you'd be pushing 2 thru 1, but would you be stepping on or taking away from the other player?
That's actually one of the main reasons it has a seperate input for both channels. This amp was built to be played in clubs, where the stage may not be big enough to allow for multiple amplifiers. Two guitar players can plug into the same amp and play. Or, it can actually be used as an instrument and a vocal amplifier at the same time. It's essentially two seperate amplifiers in the same package.
@WarmothGuitarist , that's good...it's basicly what I'm looking for, and the price is right. I've seen a lot of old units rolling around so they must be pretty well built. Thanks for your detailed reply.
I've yet to see one gear wire review by a person who can either (a) play the guitar and (B) actually know what they are talking about? seriously these guys shoot themselves in the foot?
I'm still using mine from the early 1980's. I still get compliments on the Roland and how great it sounds. I must admit that I'm not too impressed with this video. It seems I'm hearing more of the room acoustics from the guy's speaking mike than the mike that's on the amp.
JC = Just Clean, 120 = Loud Amplifier [The Roland JC-120]
It stays clean, all night long. Sounds great with a tube overdrive in front. Look at the Effectrode Tube Overdrive. That pedal, with this amp, and you're in business.
Leave your opinion out of the review and give an objective and professional review. Saying things like "cheesy" and that you don't like the sound, ruins the review. So bad. Way too much of his opinion and not enough guitar playing. This amp does much more than Jazz and when pushed loud and in a band setting, the distortion can be rather useful and sounds pretty great. Don't let this asshat lean you in the wrong direction. The JC120 is bad ass.
@harlesslee There is a band called asian kung fu generation, and one of the guitarists uses a roland jc-160 with a gibson marauder, and he gets a sound similar to the other guitarist, who uses a les paul and a marshall half stack.
Quite a letdown when you listen to it. I'm sorry have to say tubes sound much better. If I had to play loud and clean, I'd get a Fender Twin. It's not so much the loudness that matters, but the TONE. Most amps today are way too loud, anyway.
Bad Video you have to mic each speaker to hear the chorus and vibrato correct, since it's in stereo and paning between the two speakers. One word for this guy IDIOT
this amp is for jazz and jazz only. you could use the chorus for a metallica/ testament but thats it. only jazz. no distortion. so don't bash on an amp not made for distortion. its like bashing on a champ on low volume. it has one knob (volume). its like bashing on a champ on low volumes
@PhiyukYu It's great for a lot of genres, not just jazz. It is indeed designed fo a clean sound, but that's usable for a lot more than just jazz. You'll have to use pedals for your distorted sound (even if I could see myself using the distorted tone from the amp in some situations) though, but the transparency (bad buzzword, i know) makes it very well suited for a lot of pedal use.
the chorus/vibrato are the same thing. When in vibrato mode its controllable. In chorus mode it's just a preset. These used to be labelled fixed (chorus) and variable (vibrato). Cheezy? Seriously? The best chorus on the planet being called cheezy by a guy in a hat like that? Anyway, the chorus/vib creates such a huge sonic space when engaged because it throws one of the speakers out of phase which makes it sound like surround sound. Best amp ever. Zero coloration which is great for clean or fx.
He said "it's cutting through very well"........what's it cutting through? There's no other sound in the video, so what the hell is it cutting through?
do these sound flat or dull?cause it sounds good here but idk if its the guitar or just acoustics in his room.i need a really dynamic amp,and these are super clean, handle pedals well, and loud, yet good for recording and practice. any help?
@rockerdude29 Pretty much sounds like this amp is EXACTLY what you need. I would recommend it for anybody really. If an FX loop is a must for you look for a newer model, otherwise I'd probably recommend a beat up old 80s model because they're not really collectable and you can find them for less than $400. Another bonus of buying used is that you don't take a hit on resale if you decide you don't like it; resale on these is brutal!
@jacolby0369 Thanks.i really dont care about effects loops.people say some pedals sound better though it but i dont notice enough to tell. And yea these have no resale value haha.Ive seen used ones like new sell for like $600 or less.I think after i get money saved for this ibanez ive been wanting im getting one of these.Theyre just to clean to not want.
What is the deal with every gear review being given by some shred douche? The 80's is over!! It's 2010 - blues-driven rock is DEAD. I mean, Eddie Van Halen was incredible and revolutionary, but that also happened 30 YEARS AGO!! Can we not have a Jonny Greenwood-type guitarist give a review? Since we live in the NOW?
@jacquesrene80 i became interested in this amp because of the band slowdive. they used it to a great effect. that's the kinda stuff i wanna hear being played out of this amp.
this amp is legendary, you can hear the chorus vibe tone on the album from The Cure and The Police it's very distinctive, but the more fun it's Metalica used this in studio with distortion pedal, but to say right it's sound like shit with distortion, compare to a mesa boogie or a marshall, it's realy better with the clean tone with vibe and chorus, especialy for funk or jazz.
@LikkleSire that video fucking pissed me off. its cool that those guys can tear it up and everything thing but i wanna hear the amp, not all the pedals through the amp
@humanrights4all If you still need info on it, my guitar teacher has a '74 AS200 and a JC-90. He uses flat wound strings on it and it sounds incredible.
@guysapire It's the oldschool way, but since the two channels basically do the same thing, so you don't really need one. If you plan on switching from a channel to another, you might need an A/B switch stompbox.
@paperhandsunion I can't tell exactly because I don't have the amp but this amp being very clean responds extremely well to effects pedals. This also means that the quality of the guitar and effects has a great impact on the overall sound.
@dragonboy2992 tapping is a joke, that should be a sticky. TO many folks get there feathers ruffled. Yes it's a terrible job but that's the jig of it.
My chorus and vibrato has a toggle switch, not the knob style and the chorus is preset and not adjustable. Still it sounds great when used judiciously. One thing, though. With the Strat, I have to roll the treble down because it cuts too harshly. The Swede requires rolling it up. Very clean amp. My twin reverb wouldn't give me a clean sound at all. It always had a little growl to it and I changed all the tubes and had it in for repair too often. It always crapped out during a gig.
I have an old JC-120 I bought for $100.00 used but in immaculate shape. The distortion sucks and the reverb is lousy, but the rest is great. I run a Peavy reverb pedal and various other pedals for effects and the amp handles it very well. I use a '72 Strat with texas specials and a Floyd Rose wammy bridge and an '81 Hagstrom Swede, stock. This amp kicks ass, but I still miss my old Twin Reverb for that tube sound. There is no substitute. My twin was in very poor shape and was toast. Still......
Last time I checked (about 5 yrs ago) they were running about $1300.00. I bought mine 20 yrs ago. I had taken my twin in for repair (it crapped out AGAIN) and they had taken the JC 120 in trade that very hour and lent it to me for a gig. I didn't want to return it so they sold it to me for what they gave on trade. SWEEEET!
i think the chorus is excellent. it was one of the reasons i bought it. i've owned this amp for 25 now years and i still love it. i play clean for the most part, but it works well with distortion pedals and any other effects pedals you might have. it is solid state, but i have yet to hear a tube amp that is better. and now, with amp simulation effects, you don't need tubes, it is all electronically simulated. and there is probably mot a better amp to play the simulation through than this.
hey guys, this video kinda blows.. but i have a question for everyone.. i run a vox tonelab le through the effects loop through a solid state amp.. i no.. im a broke ass college kid... but would this amp be a good investment for a multi fx unit to shine through? cause i use that for all my sounds... its not too bad actually but yea i need a new amp... any help???
I own this amp and have been plating for over 18 yrs now, yes it will do great with a multi effects processor, I have a Digitech RP2000 I use and set the EQ flat and use the EQ in my processor so each channel has its own vibe, and I love it.
This amp sounds great with boss effects--I don't know why, but all boss effects sound $100 dollars more expensive when played through this amp. Just so much better. On any other amp I hate boss effects.
Guy is a douche. we dont care what you think just [play the trucking thing.

Cool gear pal, I am trying to figure out how would a hollowbody sound through a JC-120, specifically an AS200.. thanks for replying
humanrights4all 2 years ago
@humanrights4all If you still need info on it, my guitar teacher has a '74 AS200 and a JC-90. He uses flat wound strings on it and it sounds incredible.

he's right the "distortion" on this amp is more like overdrive.
MichaelD8393 2 years ago
It's funny when he says that the chorus sounds better after "tweaking the knobs" a bit.
Little does he know, it sounds exactly the same. The Depth and Speed knob only control the vibrato, and have no effect on the single setting chorus.
jazzpiano10 2 years ago 3
there isn't a button to switch channels? you have to plug it again?
guysapire 2 years ago
@guysapire It's the oldschool way, but since the two channels basically do the same thing, so you don't really need one. If you plan on switching from a channel to another, you might need an A/B switch stompbox.
SteelSkin667 2 years ago
@SteelSkin667 how does it resond to like maybe a BOss ds-1 dist. pedal?
paperhandsunion 2 years ago
@paperhandsunion I can't tell exactly because I don't have the amp but this amp being very clean responds extremely well to effects pedals. This also means that the quality of the guitar and effects has a great impact on the overall sound.
SteelSkin667 2 years ago
@paperhandsunion the boss ds1 sounds cheap...therefore it will sound cheap through this amp
Ilovemyfender2 1 year ago
i don't care if it "sounds" cheap i love the thing! ilove the tone

@dragonboy2992 tapping is a joke, that should be a sticky. TO many folks get there feathers ruffled. Yes it's a terrible job but that's the jig of it.
dyingforastrat 1 year ago
@dragonboy2992 hahaha you kidding - LOL
svenzia 1 year ago
can you run the chorus and vibrato at the same time to get a uni-vibe type of tone?
dragonboy2992 2 years ago
he's recording one speaker, the chorus is in stereo
speaker 1 - clean (normal) guitar sound
speaker 2 - modulated (fx) guitar sound
therefore this video is void. it doesn't demo the amp properly, check out Rolands actual demo...
jakeblandjk47 2 years ago 3
it sounds great!
superpaco666 2 years ago
My chorus and vibrato has a toggle switch, not the knob style and the chorus is preset and not adjustable. Still it sounds great when used judiciously. One thing, though. With the Strat, I have to roll the treble down because it cuts too harshly. The Swede requires rolling it up. Very clean amp. My twin reverb wouldn't give me a clean sound at all. It always had a little growl to it and I changed all the tubes and had it in for repair too often. It always crapped out during a gig.
domvac24 2 years ago
I have an old JC-120 I bought for $100.00 used but in immaculate shape. The distortion sucks and the reverb is lousy, but the rest is great. I run a Peavy reverb pedal and various other pedals for effects and the amp handles it very well. I use a '72 Strat with texas specials and a Floyd Rose wammy bridge and an '81 Hagstrom Swede, stock. This amp kicks ass, but I still miss my old Twin Reverb for that tube sound. There is no substitute. My twin was in very poor shape and was toast. Still......
domvac24 2 years ago
i too have an old jc-120.
are they too expensive if the´re new??
superpaco666 2 years ago
Last time I checked (about 5 yrs ago) they were running about $1300.00. I bought mine 20 yrs ago. I had taken my twin in for repair (it crapped out AGAIN) and they had taken the JC 120 in trade that very hour and lent it to me for a gig. I didn't want to return it so they sold it to me for what they gave on trade. SWEEEET!
domvac24 2 years ago
Distortion sucks when the guy using it sucks...dick. This sucks. Nice Amp but stupid looking hat.

is this spring reverb?
mikejoanderson 2 years ago
Yep.
Meta1Head91 2 years ago
i think the chorus is excellent. it was one of the reasons i bought it. i've owned this amp for 25 now years and i still love it. i play clean for the most part, but it works well with distortion pedals and any other effects pedals you might have. it is solid state, but i have yet to hear a tube amp that is better. and now, with amp simulation effects, you don't need tubes, it is all electronically simulated. and there is probably mot a better amp to play the simulation through than this.

Why would i be happier with a $900 tube amp when this sounds great for jazz cleans and is only like $200-300 used?

hey guys, this video kinda blows.. but i have a question for everyone.. i run a vox tonelab le through the effects loop through a solid state amp.. i no.. im a broke ass college kid... but would this amp be a good investment for a multi fx unit to shine through? cause i use that for all my sounds... its not too bad actually but yea i need a new amp... any help???
MuDvAyNw 2 years ago
I own this amp and have been plating for over 18 yrs now, yes it will do great with a multi effects processor, I have a Digitech RP2000 I use and set the EQ flat and use the EQ in my processor so each channel has its own vibe, and I love it.
CedarViewQH 2 years ago
This amp sounds great with boss effects--I don't know why, but all boss effects sound $100 dollars more expensive when played through this amp. Just so much better. On any other amp I hate boss effects.
