Like, whenever I hear Beck play I always know it is him...he's more distinctive than Clapton I think, though not necessarily way more technically skilled or anything.
I give clapton some serious respect for playing with Jeff Beck! the guy is insanely good at guitar. Everybody rates him as the/ one of the best guitarists ever! even the old west coast blues guys rank him
I've always loved Claptons version of this song...but...just heard the original by Bobby Blan. What a great version that is. Clapton's got the sizzlin guitar flash...but Bobby's got the smoother cooler more soulful version.
Sizzlin' stuff from bros JB&EC. From the fabulous "broken glass" strat tone-out of phase "Live from Buddokan" era. This clip from Sting's Policeman's Ball reminds us that Clapton is every bit as great a vocalist as he is a guitarist. As to Sir Jeff ?---- "too hot to funk with!".Didn't these guys play together in the Yardbirds for awhile in the '60"s? Check out our blues in this style on youtube --- johnnyguitar335
@Freakishd If you go on you tube and go to jeff beck talks about his guitars he explains why he loves this particular telly it has the sound closest to a les paul gibson
That's Jeff's band at the time and while Beck finishes his 1st solo you can see Simon and the bass player pulling out all the stops to support their man, Jeff.
Clapton is amazing but in this vid Beck is in fn overdrive....even the drummer went nuts whenever Beck solo'd. But respect must be paid to Clapton. Nowadays I would rather see either of them instead of BB.(last two shows I saw kinda suck compared to when i saw him in the 90's.) What an awesome display of power...love it.
@AblueSHADEofMETAL: Clapton - whom I've listened to for years and seen live 2-3 times - is the kind of performer that coasts sometimes and maybe gets bored occasionally, and needs steller musicians to push him and bring his fire out. Duane Allman did it. Albert Lee and some other heavyweights toured with him in the old days and did it, as Beck is doing here.
Although Clapton is clearly a legend and the king of understated, classy, and subtle blues guitar, he's clearly in awe of Jeff and always has been. Two titans, awesome
Maybe they're motivated by the special magic of live performance, rather than wanting to sell a record to everyone in the world. Maybe when they try in a studio its not a fun. A live single sounds like it ought to happen but a full album up to the formitable standards of both these guys may not be do-able.
@CallMeElune you need to watch jeff beck "brush with the blues" in 1999 on jools holland show. just type in brush with the blues on youtube and its the first on the list. Trust me, if you think this guitar solo is amazing, you really don't know Beck, watch the video it will blow your mind!
What a tremendous performance from both guys (and the whole band ).Eric said after this gig that he believed that he had just played alongside the best guitarist in the world !Jeff was on fire here but EC was excellent as well .
when Jimi Hendrix played guitar, he looked like he was making love with a woman. When Jeff Beck plays guitar, he looks like a monkey playing with himself
awsome performance! i think jesse johnson of the Time featuring morris day & jesse johnson revue is in the same league as these two great guitar players but doesn't get nearly as much publicity!
Beck tends to avoid the cliches that Clapton defaults to. That's the real difference between these two; Clapton has stated that he is a disciple of the Blues and wants to sustain its legacy. Beck, on the other hand, wants to stretch outside the parameters of whatever he's doing. This was particularly noticeable when he replaced Clapton in the Yardbirds. Sudden that band went from psuedo whiteboy blues to something totally new and unique. Check 'Over Under Sideways Down', 'Shapes of Things, etc.'
Imagine if Clapton and Beck had have been in the Yardbirds at the Same time. Imagine if Jimmy Page was also in it with them. God that would be so dreamy.
@noblesiner - Not sure if you're aware, but Page was in the Yardbirds with Beck, first as bassist then switching to 2nd lead. You can hear the two on 'Happenings 10 Years Time Ago', 'Psycho Daisies', and 'Stroll On'. On 'Happenings... ' Jeff does the stunning lead work. 'Pscycho... ' sees Jeff also singing. And 'Stroll On' is a derivative of 'Train Kept a-Rolling', a Yardbirds staple that Aerosmith picked up off them. 'Beck's Bolero' on Jeff's 'Truth' album sees Page on rhythm, Beck on lead.
@MrCherryJuice I knew that already mr no it all LOL!!! Thanks though. I meant all three being in the yardbirds at the same time. The yardbirds being a five piece void of Chris dreja and Paul Samwell Smith, and having instead Clapton on alternating rhythm and lead guitar and Jeff Beck the Same, and having Jimmy Page on bass and also producing and it being a five piece band with Keith Relf still as vocalist and Jim Mccarty still on drums, making it a five piece.
@MrCherryJuice This would be a great line up for somewhere between 66 and 68 seeing as how psychedelia was in full effect during this period, and Clapton had somewhat deviated from his Pure blues style to a more experimental style while he was In Cream. He would fit right in with the yardbirds during this time. NOW THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN SOME BOMB SHIT. No telling what kinda classic tunes would have spawn from this line up. What a supergroup this would have been.
A classic we kids used to play in the garage when our parents weren't home.
What is with this competition BS around here?
EC AND JB are pals man, chill with that "who's" best shit.
Both Eric and Jeff are guitar player's guitar player, with personal identities like every human being has. So drop the competitive BS and just pick up your guitar, kick up that amp and join in the fun.
The only think about that you can say with this video is that at first, Eric is coasting through a bit, not giving it his full. When Jeff steps in full force, Clapton has to up his game a bit. Which is a great dynamic to have between two players.
@ukjacklondon i said "but he's not, so it doesn't matter" so it means that wat im trying to say is that it doesn't matter. beside's I'm a fan of them both
I really don't care who says who is the best guitarist. I know that for me it's Beck.On the other hand he can't sing and Clapton is a helluva vocalist. Just enjoy them whil they are still out there performing!!
I tell ya what...If another guitar player can make Slowhand himself smile like that then in my book, that "other" guitar player is one helluva musician!...Can I get a witness? Say amen!
@kewlfonz I thought I was the only one that liked him more as a pick player. Sure he's done some nice things finger style (Where Were You?) but I liked him better when he played more with the pick. Listen to this and great solos like on Journey to Love by Stanley Clarke. He was more interesting to me, played more rhythm guitar too.
@ocean4315 It's good when people are honest and say what they really mean instead of worrying about what other's will say. I've noticed that just me saying this, other people have agreed with me.
I don't understand why Jeff Beck has totally abandoned his plectrum. I mean why not do both i.e. some stuff works better with the flatpick and still other songs work better with the fingers.
Why did Jeff Beck every put down that bloody flatpick??? He absolutely tears poor old EC to pieces on this. I don't think EC was on top form on this song - Jeff Beck is. Christ what guitar player.
Jeff, if you're listening pickup that pick again and get back shredding. This is shredding with talent and feel!!!
@kewlfonz Give it up. Beck always looks ahead and rarely looks back. That's what an innovator does. That's why he put down the pick. If he ever stagnates, it'll be because he's dead.
I have seen both of these guys as far back as 1967 each one is great. I just think Jeff has taken his guitar to a level that no one can compare to now. I am going to see him on March 28th at Beacon theater in NYC can,t wait
Two of the all time greats. Each has their own style and it doesn't matter who is the "greatest guitar player in the world." Nobody coming up today can even come close to these guys, so sit back and enjoy the show.
Will someone please tell me why these two guys, as much as they've played live together over the years and on other people's records, have never done a duet album together? Is there anybody who WOULDN'T buy it?
@euanross89 Not for me. Page is just a really different kind of player from Beck & Clapton. I mean they're all different, but Beck & Clapton have some familiar territory like rockabilly and country-blues etc. that would make for a better pairing I think.
@euanross89: Personally, I'd name Albert Lee to that list rather than Page - but of course Page is a much bigger star than Lee, at least among the general public, so you've probably got a point. Still, you ask these three heavies about Albert Lee, they'll tell you what a monster he is on guitar. Clapton has toured and recorded with him.
@sthugh My guess is a big part of it is just natural rivalry. These two are superstars but also virtuosos in every sense which takes a big ego. I'm not knocking that. It's probably necessary to have the drive to get as far as they have. Someone commented that "Jeff is really showing off..., & Eric is lovin' every minute of it!" I've been watching these guys for 45 years and I see a moment when Clapton seems to force a smile when Beck just effortlessly flies into the stratosphere!
@ Kitnik23,, You are so young in the head , that without "the Old Dudes" as you put it. You would have not a leg to stand on, Metal Shit Guitarist, ,,, Jeez Joe Satriani is 56 years old, is he an "Old Dude"? Not fer nothing , you don't have a clue !
all those old dudes are innovaters, but now there are many 15 year olds who already blow them away ( sorry to say ) but the shit metal quitarists do nowadays the dinosaurs couldnt dream of. But Beck was on to something.
I'm surprised at all the "who's better"stuff here - I love the earlier bit when they are totally thrashing together - really amazing - and then when becks solo is going into orbit clapton is smiling at how good it is - and at one point when they go back into the verse there's a wee half-shrug thing from clapton as if to say "wow - what dyou do after that?" but it all seems very good humoured. ultimattely all the "best" stuff gets silly-(but if you insist I'd set Danny Gatton up against beck):)
Seems to be lots of aggro here. Both of these fellows are great guitarists. That said, I don't think they do this song as good as Bobby Blue Bland. His version is, in my view, the best, and anyway he introduced it. Rarely do you get a better verson of a song than the original.
Someone here is going to give me a serve over this, but there it is.
Jumpman. Just because someone makes a hit record/s does'nt mean they are the best in the business. The music world is littered with musicians who dont appeal to the wider public but are superior players to those that make it big.
I understand that a lot of folk cant see past Clapton and I can understand that but, that doesn't make him the guitar god he is supposed to be. I've seen him live and I can tell you he was absolute crap. He had his back-up guitarist doing all the solo work.
please check out my son...named after Eric Clapton...primussux (channel) and theDIMENSIONchannel (channel) originals and covers...guitar player, singer, songwriter...very talented and I say that cause it's true not cause I'm his mom:) thanks:)))
Let's face it - Jeff Beck's is a guitar voice, he's always right there giving it all he's got. It's more than anyone could ask for who's really listening! EC's voice is a fine and steady gift, and he endulges in splashes of brilliance on guitar, sometimes more than for a just a little while. They're a great blend of finesse, art, oh yeah heart and soul and I hope theyll still collaborate from time to time!
Clapton is so frustrating at times. He'll play a solo that totally blows everyone away then he goes mediocre for ages, whereas Beck plays brilliantly all the time.
@Bluesnote2010 funny cuz clapton continued to make hit after hit throughout the ages and u caint turn on the radio without hearing a tune from him. i caint tell u a HIT from Beck. did u know he got booed when he replace clapton when he quit the yardbirds. dont ever compare the two. clapton is_
No guitarist are alike. There are good players like Clapton and there are better players like Jeff Beck. Most traditional blues players hate Jeff Beck because they can't hold him in a box. He's just too good. He can play blues (ask BB King)... and then more.
@imavaughanstar Jeff is really showing off on this tune, and Eric is lovin' every minute of it! They dont give a shit about what some idiot has to say about whos better, theyre into playin and havin fun!
Hi, why do You talk shit about to of the best "white" guitar players who knows how to play the blues. And coming from England it is a long way to the Delta Blues.
They are both excellent in their on ways and let be like that. Enjoy or be silent.....

Apparently Jeff Beck turned the sound on his amps full on - but the pa chaps without Jeff knowing switched the speakers off as the crowd wasnt the rock 'n roll type so the sound was channeld thru the monitors only & was loud enough to fill the hall.
Looks like a left hand lifted in surrender @ 2:28 along with a grin, likewise. All in fun--after all Eric can buy whatever he needs, except for Jeff's guitar skills, and they were a somewhat of a
Clapton is a great rock/blues player and a better songwriter than Beck, but Jeff will ALWAYS have the playing hand over him. Jeff constantly explores new genres of music and continues changing his live band up, all for the sake of staying entertained and pushing his limits and ours. Clapton doesn't do this, therefore in my eyes for most musicians, we would pick Beck as the overall "better" guitar player. They are both great.. but Jeff is an alien, end of story.
Beck should charge Eric for this guitar lesson.
But Erics vocals did sound fantastic..

I have seen both of these guys as far back as 1967 each one is great. I just think Jeff has taken his guitar to a level that no one can compare to now. I am going to see him on March 28th at Beacon theater in NYC can,t wait
fed1126 11 months ago
Guitar playing at a very high level. They are different in style, but hell they know how to play they blues.
Some of the very best.

Is there anybody who WOULDN'T buy it?
sthugh 1 year ago 18
@sthugh i would buy five copies
nunestunes 7 months ago
@sthugh imagine one with the Big British Three? Clapton, Beck and Page?
euanross89 7 months ago
@euanross89 Not for me. Page is just a really different kind of player from Beck & Clapton. I mean they're all different, but Beck & Clapton have some familiar territory like rockabilly and country-blues etc. that would make for a better pairing I think.
sthugh 7 months ago
@euanross89 That already happened the album is called guitar boogie!
zepher1494 7 months ago
@zepher1494 Thanks for bring that to me :)
euanross89 6 months ago
@euanross89: Personally, I'd name Albert Lee to that list rather than Page - but of course Page is a much bigger star than Lee, at least among the general public, so you've probably got a point. Still, you ask these three heavies about Albert Lee, they'll tell you what a monster he is on guitar. Clapton has toured and recorded with him.
GeorgiaBoy1961 5 months ago
@sthugh i would certainly buy it
my87z28 6 months ago
@sthugh My guess is a big part of it is just natural rivalry. These two are superstars but also virtuosos in every sense which takes a big ego. I'm not knocking that. It's probably necessary to have the drive to get as far as they have. Someone commented that "Jeff is really showing off..., & Eric is lovin' every minute of it!" I've been watching these guys for 45 years and I see a moment when Clapton seems to force a smile when Beck just effortlessly flies into the stratosphere!

all those old dudes are innovaters, but now there are many 15 year olds who already blow them away ( sorry to say ) but the shit metal quitarists do nowadays the dinosaurs couldnt dream of. But Beck was on to something.

I'm surprised at all the "who's better"stuff here - I love the earlier bit when they are totally thrashing together - really amazing - and then when becks solo is going into orbit clapton is smiling at how good it is - and at one point when they go back into the verse there's a wee half-shrug thing from clapton as if to say "wow - what dyou do after that?" but it all seems very good humoured. ultimattely all the "best" stuff gets silly-(but if you insist I'd set Danny Gatton up against beck):)
echo680 1 year ago
Seems to be lots of aggro here. Both of these fellows are great guitarists. That said, I don't think they do this song as good as Bobby Blue Bland. His version is, in my view, the best, and anyway he introduced it. Rarely do you get a better verson of a song than the original.
Someone here is going to give me a serve over this, but there it is.
paulkate72 1 year ago
But Jeff, if he's your friend, why do that to him?
Nounismisation 1 year ago
Both these men are excellent guitar players and they do not care about being the best. They just play their instruments - Fenders at this perfomance.
Siwieto1958 1 year ago
they are great i prefer beck and i like peter green over clapton as well
ithinku8dert 1 year ago

Smargiasso33 1 year ago
Let's face it - Jeff Beck's is a guitar voice, he's always right there giving it all he's got. It's more than anyone could ask for who's really listening! EC's voice is a fine and steady gift, and he endulges in splashes of brilliance on guitar, sometimes more than for a just a little while. They're a great blend of finesse, art, oh yeah heart and soul and I hope theyll still collaborate from time to time!
krko98 1 year ago
Clapton is so frustrating at times. He'll play a solo that totally blows everyone away then he goes mediocre for ages, whereas Beck plays brilliantly all the time.
And he's far more adventurous in his music.
Bluesnote2010 1 year ago
@Bluesnote2010 funny cuz clapton continued to make hit after hit throughout the ages and u caint turn on the radio without hearing a tune from him. i caint tell u a HIT from Beck. did u know he got booed when he replace clapton when he quit the yardbirds. dont ever compare the two. clapton is_
jumpmanJB23 1 year ago
No guitarist are alike. There are good players like Clapton and there are better players like Jeff Beck. Most traditional blues players hate Jeff Beck because they can't hold him in a box. He's just too good. He can play blues (ask BB King)... and then more.

All in fun--after all Eric can buy whatever he needs, except for Jeff's guitar skills, and they were a somewhat of a
Gift.
strandwolf 1 year ago
1 I rate both of them.
2 Beck plays more and wackier notes
3 I prefer the notes that Clapton plays.
4 It aint a matter to get aggressive about. Enjoy the music.

The good old days! I am so glad that I had seen both of their concerts in Hong Kong.
