And here I am again :) watching Daniela work her magic. AND this must be the best filming of a beam exercise I have seen. No close ups of feet, or hands or overhead shots - plain and simple from the side so you can see everything. The muppets who film gymnastics competitions today should go back and watch this! Just my opinion :)
What a legend she is! So much talent is such a small frame. She was just beautiful to watch. I go back and watch her every now and then when I want to see some good ARTISTIC gymnastics, not just power tumbling.
@LMA629 the standards by which judges deducted for that kind of thing weren't very clearly defined in the COP back then. It was really up to the discretion of the judge wether or not to deduct for a small balance check, especially if it came after a particularly difficult skill. This was an extraordinarily difficult routine for that time, and performed brilliantly, so i'm sure the judges were rewarding her accordingly.
She was amazing , also considering her young age...I just don't see how people could believe she was 15 here...she is 13 and still looks very childish to me...If I didn't know her age, maybe I'd think she's even younger than 13...
It's so moving to watch my most favorite gymnast of all times in her first great victory, even though that should have been a 9.95 because of the minor instability
Hmm..dubious 10. She definitely had a couple of little breaks there. Never mind. She was one of the best beam workers EVER. By the way, she was two years too young to "officially" take part in this competition: she was supposed to be 15 here. She was actually only 13 years old. Romanian passports eh????
I don't think this rumour has a rational basis. If she was 13 in montreal then she was only 16 in seoul and just 17 when she quit gymnastics in 1989?!?
Seeing her ambition and the incredible progress she made year after year, the Romanian Gymnastics Federation changed her date of birth in 1985, claiming she was born in 1970 rather than in 1972, so as to allow her to compete in the Montreal World Championships. Although the age falsification was suspected at the time, it has never really been looked into.
"At competitions, I would say the same thing my passport said, but away from competitions, among friends, I would tell people my real age," says the former gymnast. But in 2002, Silivaş came clean, admitting that her age had been modified at the time and that the Romanian officials had given her a new passport and drawn her attention to her new age.
If what fatalbeauty says is true then i am shocked and appalled not only on account of the fraud but for the additional reason that daniela was way too young to stop competing at the age of 17.She had at least 3 fruitful years ahead of her
Yes, she was too young to retire sadly. She had no choice though, because the Romanian Revolution happened in 1989 and the gym closed down. Thats why she had to give up, because of politics, not through choice. She was one of my favourite gymnasts ever. She was so naturally gifted, a joy to watch.
The judges had two options : 9,90 or 10. (there was no 9.95 at that time). So they opted for 10 which was closer to what Daniela did.
In some other times 9.95 would be just. Anyhow, she deserved the gold.

@akimbohr Really? I did not know this! I thought they could deduct up to thousands of a point! That explains the 10.00 then. :)

it was a great routine, but how did she get a 10? she had a couple of tiny balance checks in there

February 2009 archive => Daniela Silivaş: "We Were a Team in the True Sense of the Word"
It seems to be serious...

I thought she retired because of a knee injury?
violaroadkill 2 years ago
@ralucagymnast also, she had knee surgery in 1990 and it was difficult for her to go back to training

It is absolutely true.
