Of course Starling's a better singer. Damn near the best. He's EmmyLou's favorite singer: I'd rather hear Starling sing Merle than hear Merle sing Merle. There's no shame in not being as good as the best.
@bangwhistle69 could stand to show some. As starling was getting ready to leave, many singers including Chris Stifel of the Country Store and (IIRC) Keith Whitley auditioned for the job. Gray, Auldridge, Eldridge and Duffey unanimously agreed Phil was a good fit (they adopted a "Quaker consensus" rule). Are you claiming to possess better judgment than the Seldom Scene? I can't figure out if that's lame or if that's hubris

@MandoAficionado Phil had been with the band for seven years in 85. He needed no training. He just had the class to step back and let the honored guest have the spotlight. Speaking of class,

One of the reasons a great art form like Bluegrass takes a back seat to crap like Taylor Swift, Big & Rich, etc. Just what in HELL is so funny to Rosenthal and Eldrige (banjo and guitar on left) when a song every bit as eloquent as Shakespeare is being performed? They might as well be throwing spit balls. Rosenthal was always LAME, LAME, LAME compared to John Starling. I have always LOVED the Seldom Scene, They are dressed like they areabout to change the oil in a car or something.
Saw them once, met all of them and got them to sign an album I bought at the festival. The best of the best JD R.I.P

One of my favorite old scene tunes. Starling's voice was the best.

It looks like Phil Rosenthal is getting on-the-job training for stepping into John Starling's spot. The original scene ruled!
