Sting is British Seanbanog4. He is from the North East of England (Newcastle) he studied at the University there to become a teacher, though I don't know if he ever really taught or only went to university before starting to sing with Police.
In the video I remember seeing (and am here searching for) the 'My Fair Lady' words were sung as they were in the original play/movie, and added on way at the end, just before the video ended. I don't know if that version is on any of the DVD 'singles' videos, but it would be worth the price. One of my favorite songs of theirs. I remember being so surprised hearing those lyrics, and telling my friends where they were from. They told me I was crazy, so I had to sit them down to watch the movie, LOL
I listen to this constantly. I'm only 28 and Invisible Sun is my favorite song of all time. This is such a good version. Better than alot of live versions I heard.
Is the original banned in England video on YouTube? I just heard about it for the first time (maybe I heard about it long ago, but I don't remember). The Police were one of my favs from the 80s.
Based on the video release and comments, I think that wikipedia is right that Northern Ireland was on the band's mind when writing the lyrics. To me the invisible sun is sort of like a metaphor for how the sun powers the earth, and the invisible sun is what powers and sustains us to give us hope when it seems all reason to hope is lost. Sort of like the line in Two Towers, where Frodo asks Sam what are we fighting for..."that there is some good left in the world"....
There's a couple things about this demo that are too rough to release (particularly the quick fade), but I think I like this take better than the albumn version. There's a hypnotic feel to it.
I like it without the last verse... but i could understand how it was used in the video version for the fade away i guess.... awesome song none the less, and i'm not a huge fan but always play this in the set list at the bar.
@CaramelCamel Yes . . . with the line changed a bit . . . in My Fair Lady the line is "All I want is a room somewhere . . . " pretty much the same . . . The Police would be absolutely huge if they came out today . . . that is how far ahead of their time they were! Great music is timeless music!
sting is english by birth i think but if u listen to his music you will find that he dont give his allegiance to ideas behind coloured cloth at the top of poles. like many other credible artists in the music industry when he sees injustice in the world that affects him in some way ....he writes songs about it....dont change much most of the time...but enlightens those who listen
In an interview with Sting by Jools Holland, you can find on this site,Sting tells how he composed it, showed it and it sounded something like the intro to this demo.
These must be Stings home recorded demos pre GITM. Is that 'Derek' the drum machine and Stings Synclavier. I'm assuming Sting played all the instruments and vocals and these were recorded before Stewart and Andy started adding there touch to them. If I'm wrong please let me know.
These demos are absolute class and a Godsend. Cheers PoliceCHOUT. These have made my day. Brillo!!
Man POLICEchout thanks for putting this stuff on here. A few of these are actually better than the ones they released. Like Truth Hits Everybody re-recording for example.
The "All I want is a place somwhere" line is from My Fair Lady and was used in the promotional video clip (music video) for Invisible Sun. So it was recorded but wasn't on the LP/Single versions of the song.
Sting was a guitarist first as a child before he learnt to play the bass. Not as good as Andy Summers but proficient enough to write songs and perform in concert (Live Aid, etc). But Andy Summers could easily play the parts Sting wrote and then some.
no it doesn't, sting could play guitar, hell he wrote the parts. yea andy was more skilled but it doesn't SUCK. That word gets thrown around too much.
These demos made me realize that sting is a pretty good guitar player...I assumed Andy wrote all the guitar parts before hearing the demos. He wrote the main riff for Message In A Bottle too, I had no idea for the longest time.

Sting's biography emphasizes that the clean sound of a trio could trounce the muddled noise of a quartet. This version supports this.

this demo feels more reggae than the final cut....interesting. The release version feels more futuristic.

What is the Invisible Sun? Wikipedia says this song is about Northern Ireland, but the way I hear it's deeper than that. It's about god.

@fantasticphantom andy said he did the arpeggios after hearing the chords, sting says he wrote them. Who knows? and frankly it doesnt matter.

Awesome song, I really do love The Police!

I wonder why they didnt put that line in the final version of the song. It would be a better ending with it, I think. But it's still a good song.

This demo is an awesome example of how a song can be stripped down to its basic parts and still be great listening to
