The advance shown was too big, it doesn't hide the movement and takes more exertion than needed to do something that is better done in two short steps.
Fencing originated when someone first used a stick to defend against someone trying to hit him or her with another stick. Countries weren't defined yet.
@eldargamer That doesn't matter at all. I was 14 when i first started, but I can easily win from a friend of mine who has been fencing since he was 8.
@zaneps151 Depends on the situation. If you've got your form down, then you can be on your toes (not all the time) to gain speed. For beginners, however, it's best to keep your heel down to maintain balance; otherwise, you'll have fencers falling and flying everywhere XD
I learned fencing fast. I took a week class, and i was one of four (out of 25 of us) that got to use the swords because of my advancing, retreating, onguard and lunge :D
@CaptainNensho LOL. I'm been told that if you learn from a master, you might do footwork for a year before even touching weapon. Same in Argentine Tango. Americans generally don't have the patience to learn a skill in this way.
@xiweiding I'm sure Nashville, or one of the surrounding Burbs like Murphreesburo must have something. If not see if your folks can drive you over here to Memphis on the weekends, we've got two fencing clubs.
@YUSEI32 This is merely footwork. mainly for western style fencing and western broadsword. But you can apply any footwork to any kind of sport or martial you do.
I think it is great to have lesson demos online, but I the ones where he describes the weapons, their functions, and the reasons for it are full of errors of fact. For example, the epee' (French for "sword") IS the dueling sword. It is pretty much unchanged from the final 19th century dueling weapon. That is why it has a triangular blade, not because it requires more pressure to hit the foot, whatever that could mean. Foil developed as a practice weapon for duelling.
I'm here to learn how to fence... With a lightsaber.... C8<

@eldargamer for epée it doesn't really matter... for foil and sabre, though, the earlier the better.
