  • Pat Bonner, my uncle and such an inspiration

  • that auld fella cryin' is a beautiful moment, hope we repeat all that this summer

  • Jack Charlton - An hononary Irish man and a true legend!!

  • I was 9 yrs old, remember jumping off our battered old couch when o leary scored. Then my old man packing us into the even more battered Ford Fiesta and driving down town to watch the madness. We didn't have much but that night was magic!

  • wo ha paul mcgrath .. great times :)

  • and im proud to be irish

  • i love ireland and i only lived on earth ireland 11yrs

  • will we ever have days like this again. what a time to be Irish

  • @john4592 We're back in the big time!

  • @ 2.40... goosebumps.... EVERY-TIME..

  • I am wearing my FUCK SCHILLIACI t-shirt to watch this

  • Seeing that old lad crying brings an ol lump to the throat. Great vid.

  • We are going to go all the way in 2012 and 2014 and we will be signing Give it a lash Trap on the Late Late Show with Jack signing with us.

We will be signing in 2012 and 2014.

  • I was born in 1990 this is my first time watching this (for a big football fan I know it's a crime). Chills couldn't begin to describe the feeling.

  • We Irish have by far the best spirit of any country, and the best fans in the world. I still remember the scenes of joy from 1990, 1994, and 2002. Hopefully we will see them again in 2012, 2014, and many other tournaments in the future.

  • Tears if Joy :)

Cmon the Irish! hopefully we get to euro2012

  • What a year and an Irish team.

Great country with a great song.

    So proud to be Irish.

If you not Irish you are unlucky.

  • ah the good times, got plastered the nite of romania match hit my head badly had to get stiches and go back on the day of italy match thinking my jaw was going to be wired up but lucily i didnt need it watched italy game drinkin outta a straw 21 years ago for fecks sake

  • @langer136

You're back with us now aren't ya? Don't let such a silly and small thing prevent you from supporting our country!

  • Chillz. Where is da penalty taken by Timofte, saved by Pat Bonner?

  • Brought a tear to my eye watching that. Really did signify the beginning of the good times in ireland, what a shame we all got carried away with it

  • i nearly cried when i saw that vid - i was in Italy and and at all those games - what wonderful memories :)

  • I was born the day Ireland beat Romania in penalties. What an epic day to be born! So proud to be Irish.

  • @thestiftler I'd say there was a few conceived that day too!

  • ireland had a great team back then but the reason why we lost that match against italy is because most of the irish team were hungover

  • Got to love the fact that such a small nation done so much and got to love the fact that it takes something stupid to stop us qualifying i hope henry remembers what he did cause everyone else will his career is over. COME ON EURO

  • GOOD TIMES,FUY YA HENRY

  • Fun fact: Ireland was the first and only team so far in the World Cup's history that qualified to the second round without winning or losing.

  • @pintendplaguski I hate to piss on your parade mate, it was italy in 1982 with 3 draws

  • @exsquilax Well it's nice to be informed with information I did not know about, thanks.

  • @pintendplaguski Your welcome :-), Ireland are the only team in history to make it to the quarter finals without winning a match in open play.

  • @exsquilax The fun fact is that in 1990 Ireland set the record of progressing the farthest in the World Cup without winning a match. Other fun facts are the highest number of World Cup appearances always progressing to the second round (90, 94, 02), and being in the only group in World Cup history where every team has finished with the same record, in USA 1994. These are all statistics I think every Irish fan can be justifiably proud of.

  • @shakeystevensVIII I agree with that :-)

  • Look at Gay Byrne in the background!

  • The commentator in the match England vs Ireland... Is Andy Gray?

  • @tomhagen2 No its Jimmy Magee.

  • @foggybest Thanks! perhaps i'm confused but the voice sounds me similar as Andy Gray.

  • well done jack ur a legend

  • I was only 7 months old, but I remember it as if it was yesterday...

  • Legend stuff! If Packie hadn't slipped with Donadoni's shot who knows what might have happened. Remember Quinn had Zenga scrambling a few times! Mighty stuff!

  • What i would give for days like these.

  • Omg give it a lash jack!

  • the biggest problem at this world cup was the ref. As soon as italy scored, blowing the whistle. It was only 70 mins gone, but he blew for full time.

  • who did ireland play in their final group game ???

  • @JAMESCELLY2 .... Holland mate .. drew 1-1.

  • @nialllewis Cheers :) they did well to get out of that group :)

  • What a crock of total shite the first song is... but what FANTASTIC memories of this world cup... The kids today have no idea what this month did for this country... My daughter was born the day the boys in green came home ... July 1st 1990... Ended up drinking with the team 'till 4A.M in the airport hotel... Jack's Army i salute you.

  • @nialllewis im 13 n that video put a chill up my spine i dream of the day when ireland will get that far in a world cup again. its been to long since ireland where in a world cup or europion cup hopefully traps brings us to poland n the urkrane

  • that was a nice site to see!! we really could have done well tho which is forever lost! no regrets ! henry can live with it!! bring on euro 12 you wankers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • The proudest moment for me was AFTER we lost to Italy ... the players clapped the fans walked off the pitch and sat disconsolate in the dressing room. 30 mins later the Italian police knocked on the door and said someone needed to come out because there were 18000 Irish that werent going to go home until they said thanks ... and then as you can see from the clip Charlton came out .... win or lose thats what makes great fans and its still proudest moment as an Irish fan

  • i look at this video evry week nd still love it :) thumbs up 4 IRELAND!

  • 4:20 on the right behind jack, is that roberto mancini?

  • @generalgoat looks like him lol

  • Ref Valente was a useless bastard remember Aldridges legite goal ruled for 'offside', a fu&king joke, not included in this video.

We were amazing, but we got ripped by a ref with no cahunas favoring the home team.

  • Ireland could have done equally as well in this world cup as in 1990. Like 1990, it would life the spirit of the country, god knows we need it (especially if we met that shitty English side in the first round ).Pity I say.

  • Brings a tear to the eye still

  • i was born durin the tournament

  • God, pity i was only two when this happened...

  • I Hope Henry Gets His Balls Chopped Off

  • 20 years ago today folks!! 20 years!!! Still gives me chills!

  • 20 years ago today folks! 20 years!!! Still gives me chills!!

  • This seriously brings back so many memories, all good :):):)

It was 9months exactly after the Romania v Ireland

Penalty shoot out I had my Son :):):

  • @msmoviefanatic so ireland being good made u horny and thus ur son haha

  • france were terrible. we'd have qualified

  • @MrHungryhill defo wouldve! its sickening could have made even further too

  • look what henry could have changed

  • @MUFC127 ya i suppose but remember the hand of god incident? shur wasnt that a world cup final if i remember correctly and nothing was done about it!!! but i have to admit it was blatantly obvious when thierry hadnballed it TWICE into the net against ireland!!!! was feckin devastated!!!! and i think i should cancel out what i said in the other post; it doesnt mean ireland would have did bad if france are doing atrocious at the moment, it all depends on the day!!!!

  • get goosebumps watchin this

  • never again

  • omg silly me i only found out there a few days ago that this was the first time ireland qualified for the world cup!!! well what an achievement to qualify for the first time ever and to reach the quater finals aswell!!!! so proud to be irish!!!

  • happy days....................

  • Comment removed

  • the crowds reaction at 2:42 and the music brings tears to my eyes!!!!

  • i dont know why everyone is hoping that france will exit early because if they do then that would mean that ireland wouldn't have had a hope in the world cup! if france win that would mean ireland would have did well in da world cup!!:) oh and this video is great.....goosebumps!!!! also would love to get a video of all the matches of ireland in italia 90 because sadly i was born in 91!!! so go france and lets hope for glory in 2014!!!!;DD

  • @sassygirlie89 france stopped us getting to the world cup by breaking a rule in football. this wasn't a handball in any 3rd division eircom league match, this was a place in the world cup. i swear to god if i was on that pitch playin i would have killed henry.

  • I WAS THERE ON 25 TH JUNE AND FOR SOME REASON I HAD AN EXTRA JERSEY WHICH I HID MY VIDEO CAMERA AND WAS SEARCHED 3 TIMES GOING INTO STADIUM... I WILL NOW LOOK FOR IT AND PUT ON YOUTUBE..... WONDERFUL MEMORIES. BRENDAN NEWRY

  • Eamon Dunphy - 3rd rate footballer, 3rd rate journalist.

  • Brings back so many great memories!I'm upset that we're not there this year! One still gets that chill and excitement!!!!!!!Fantastic video markhallen!WE WILL B THERE AGAIN!Tiocaidh Ar La!!!Love it!!

  • henry nigger cunt

  • cracking video, the world cup won't be the same without us there. Fuck you henry !

  • Still remember watching this with my dad in Ostan Na Rosa in Dungloe. Really gives me goose bumps watchin the penalty shoot out.

  • Great video, can't believe it doesn't have more views. Wish I had been around to see it in person, we need a triumph like this to put the country back on its feet in terms of spirit.

  • C'mon ireland Screw henry

  • wish i was old enough 2 remember it!!!! gives me shivers down my back

  • hats off

  • No other sport catches the heart of the nation as much. what pity we were cheated out of a place at the 2010 World Cup by that cunt Henry

  • cannot wait till euro i hope we qualify and i hope we get the frogs and ihope we destroy um and i hope we score with a handball so they can have a taste of tjheir own froggey medicine

  • I'm sittin here cryin.... pure joy and love... I remember everything- thanks, lads..

  • i hope henry gets his legs broke!!

  • @bonzo I Hope His Balls Get Choped Off

  • @iCantTinkOfaGudName O HELL YEAH!! all refs sem to hate us remember the 2010 qualifiers!

  • @Mushabellie4699 LoL i Felt like i was gona get sick cos Ireland wont have Duff Given n Dunne for the next world cup ;/

  • @bonzo: I think what happened to the French team in South Africa was much worse than only Henry breaking his leg. Henry and all the others won´t only be remembered for Henry´s cheating against Ireland but also for putting on the worst performance of a French team ever on a Word Cup so far - on the pitch as well as off the pitch. Well, I don´t exactly begrudge them of it - especially not their manager, Mr. Raymond "No one likes me, I don´t give a flying fuck" Domenech!

  • @bonzo What good will that do? All he needs is his hand.

  • @bonzo: I think what actually happened to Henry and his - let´s say "teammates" - is even a lot worse. This French team failed so badly in every respect one can imagine.... I know that this doesn´t make it any better for Ireland but at least the French got what they deserved.

  • @stipefan11 that was a nice site to see!! we really could have done well tho which is forever lost! no regrets ! henry can live with it!! bring on euro 12 you wankers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Fantastic video, gives me goosebumps.

  • The greatest story ever told

  • @greetingsiamross well put!

  • Cmon Ireland! ;) Cannot wait for the Euro 2012 qualifiers!! :D

  • 16 years old at the time and a golden summer that seem to stretch out before me. 20 years ago and it still brings a tear to the eye. There really hasn't been a single event that brought as much joy to Ireland since. What a lovely memory. Perfection!

  • ireland was fuckin awsome this yr david o leary was awsome!!!!!!!!

  • ah the memories are great. i was 11 and ill never forget that summer.....ever

  • what a legendary clip,so much pride and passion.

we might of had more great memories from SA if it wasnt for that cheating shower of b*stards.corrupt frog f*ckers that are fifa

  • Just makes it horrible to think of what that dirty french bastard robbed from us. We'll get them back though.

  • I think there is a chance for you to qualify - but you´ll need a little luck, too. Maybe you could ask James McFadden how to score goals against France....

Good luck and best wishes from Germany!

  • theres a 50/50 chance. im more worried about the game IN france. i really do hope my homeland of ireland qualify!

  • still gives me chills :)

  • watch out italy were gonna take you down next month!South afriac here we come

  • i feel bad how the french won bull shit but u guys r still awsome

  • Thanks very much for putting that up, markhallen, I have such good memories of that world cup. My only misfortune was to watch that game with Italians who did nothing but criticise their own team!

  • We didn't win a single game in 90 minutes but was great all the same!

  • ireland in italia 90 will always live in my meromy an im only 19teen i wish i was around for that. i hope they bring back memory's for south africa an they will all be hero's

  • Bleedin Deadly:) Gonna DO It Agen In South Africa:D

  • the nation holds its breath

  • Jaysus I hope to god they get through this year again

  • you heard the man! "for the first time, not the last time the irish lads have qualified"

it'll happen! best summer and irish team ever! this is totally the best vid on youtube! packie bonner is a legend!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • i watched the shoot out in our front room . every one else left the room and stuck a head in with evey yeah and ahh, and when we won it they came at first as buisness like as you want ,but then as they watched the celibrations the tears flowed

  • When the penalty shootout was taking place I was outside the stadium on my coach watching in on the TV. Within a few minutes I was joined by about 30 Italian cops. When OLeary was taking his turn I got so nervous that I got off the bus, I just couldnt watch. The next moment the bus erupted in cheers, it literally shook. OLeary had done it and we were off to Rome.

  • the irish kciekd ass bak int he day

  • Still do mate ;)

  • This is definately the best video on youtube. I was born 3 years after Italia 90, so I haven't been able to live through any success, so it's brilliant to see this!

  • This video brings me to tears every time!!

  • What a legend Jack Charlton is!!! Irelands favourite englishman(unique group). He kick started the Celtic Tiger!

  • i was 7 when this world cup was on,and i remember after every match, every one was out on the streets celebrating like mad.those were the days..

    c'mon ireland

  • Is fabulous to see these moments.Congrats Ireland

We lost the final that year.....

  • Ireland rock

  • Brings a tear or two to my eyes when I watch this. I was 11 that summer, remember it well.

    Ahh the memories!

  • I publicly confess that 'Big Jack lads' reconciled me with football in the 80s. As in Euro 88, in WC 90 they deserved far better luck than they really had.

When I knew who was the referee appointed to the WC 90 Ireland-Italy match, I told my father: "The lads are off!" The referee was a (to put it mildly...) 'notorious' countryman of mine: the Portuguese Carlos Valente. Need I say more?...

  • sadly ireland hasnt mad the european cup this year . we have been playin like a sunday club lately its now 2008 dont expect anyfin yet we have trapii now hopefully he brings sumit new to us if any american who taught we wouldnt make it make it fair play but id bet none of u betted on it hope to make a dif comment sooon slán léath

  • "we prepared properly.....we had a little bit of sun.....we ate well...and we drank very little....were gonna change that tonight"

  • give it a lash jack give it a lash jack never never say no...ireland ireland republic of ireland.... IRRCH

  • I was three when this happened. And I still don't give up on us getting there again. But we do need a better squad than now. Never ever ever say No.

  • Will we ever get these times back? packi turned me into a keeper after romania game,if if ever qualify again i'l go buck ape

  • I totally agree - 1990 was the best summer ever. Even the weather was great that year :)

  • That was the best summer ever

  • Ah the memories! There is no excuse for the current state of the national team save for the football association not providing enough money to get things right. Irish players are littered throughout loads of good teams in the premiership yet we can't beat minnows. lets hope this italian gets things goin!

Viva Charlton. It truely was a great time!

  • Hmmm - I don´t know if your team will play better with "Mr. Catenacchio" as a coach. His tactics go very much against the grain of Irish (and every other country´s) football. What he wants to see is only "Let´s crowd our own penalty area and wait for the others to score an own goal". Glasgow Rangers´ style, in other words. *ggg*

    But maybe I´m wrong....

Anyway - Jack Charlton may be the only Englishman who is REALLY popular in Ireland (a kind of "Anti-Cromwell").

    Greetings from Germany!

  • eamonn dunphy

    A-class wanker

  • irish football has gone so far down hill

  • 18 years ago now; I remember this like it was last week!! Bloody hell......

  • That Skelachi is a bollocks!!!

  • i was only born like a month before the competition and i get goosebumps watching it!

  • You know, we didn't actually win a single game at that world cup...we drew with England, Egypt and Holland, and in the second round we drew with Romania, only going through on penalties and were hammered by Italy...the 1-0 scoreline did not reflect Italy's domination....I actually think we underachieved with the players we had, we could have gone further, even won the thing if we'd played to our best.

Having said that, it was still a great time to be Irish.

  • the birth of the celtic tiger

  • My first great feelings about football...viva Jacky, thx for everything!

  • did our midfield ever get a touch haha packie with two assists! classic stuff!

  • favourite video ever!! bring back jack charlton!! e should get d job!!!

  • My compliments, it's a very good video...That world cup was'nt lucky for Italy, too...Can everyone of you tell me the title of the last song in the video? Thank you and salutation from Sardinia!!

  • the song is called "there she goes" from the band called The La's

  • we ar goin thru a bad time nw,but dnt eva stop supporting da team,we'll cum round again

  • Ah it's all bollix now. It's completely lost the magic. Nothing special about it anymore. That team had great characters Cascarino, Townsend, Whelan - now theres nothing. Get a much better buzz from the Eircom League. Support you're local football team!

    FORZA SHELBOURNE

  • hahaha... Forza Shelbourne.. back where they belong, good ridance to them and the "Briogaid Dearg"..!!! crap club, crap fans, crap team... in a crap league

  • ur a cunt get the aids and die

  • If you are half Portuguese half Danish as you claim then tell me where Germany fits in. Do you remember euro88? MARCO VAN BASTEN.. LOL

  • Hey Irish friends! I hope you liked how we kicked England's ass in the semi-finals in 1990. Hehehe, greetings to the Irish people from Germany.

  • I can't remember the English losing to Portugal in the semi-finals of Italia90

  • Happy memories.

  • 'i was born on this year, and looking now at it it was my whole familys best moment ever... and me looking at it now, its myne 2.'

  • Memeories that will never die, the greatest time in Soccer ever. Dunphy, dead man walking, created his 15 mins of fame. Loser, bring back the great Jack Charlton!

  • That bastard Schillaci. You'd think i'd remember the game against England or O'Leary's peno. No i can just remember that bastard making me cry!

  • i will never forge
