@jatt92rs This was after the speed skating incident in the Olympics, where Anton Ohno acted as if he got hit and got a South Korean dq'd from first. So they just did it as a bit, pretty funny.
Let me see: TYING a game for an eventual 1-1 draw somehow is revenge for a GOLD medal (that was the result of an Australian judge's decision, no less)?!?!?!
good game today. lee chyong yong got a goal but friggin saruez. saruez's goal was amazing. good try korea. we know you did your best. looking foward to 2014!!
@raymikey141 Yeah, the Korea vs Argentina match should be a good, hard-fought game, whichever team wins. Good luck to USA against Slovenia. If they win that game, they should definitely be clear to the second round.
@raymikey141 Yeah, the tactics and gameplan for Korea really backfired in this game, and Argentina definitely came ready to play. Greece upsetting Nigeria though keeps Korea alive in the group, so it could be worse, all things considered.
To remind you, though, this is simply a soccer video about a goal Ahn Jung-Hwan scored against the USA. And his celebration was never meant to be political or controversial; it was just a creative way to commemorate the equalizer. And once again, I don't really care about speedskating, gymnastics, boxing, etc. This is a football (or soccer to Yanks) video.
@AdarianDreamer ur wrong! listen you're a respectful guy and a good writer-but just uninformed about what happened. The Ahn celebration was a direct anti-US statement b/c most koreans perceived the decision by Aus judge James Hewitt as being guided by the US for reasons that string back to many Olympics and b/c in 2002 Bush had labeled N. Korea as an axis-of-evil which didn't sit well with Koreans. The pol climate was tense-the crowd was frenzied-otherwise y would korea care?US sucks at soccer.
@raymikey141 lol, US is okay at soccer and have become a bit of sports rival to Korea, which is why they care. There might be something to a political climate in 2002, but Bush labeling North Korea in the axis of evil is something only radical lefty Koreans would care about. I think a more heated issue in Korea regarding USA at the time was the presence of so many US troops occupying Korea. Wanting them to pull out was a big issue of debate for a while but that's a whole different story.
@AdarianDreamer yes agreed-it was many things-US troops-the death of 2 school girls hit by a US military vehicle in '97 or '98-past Olympic decisions-Ohno having a Japanese father-all played into Korean anti-American sentiment. the country has had a history of foreign occupation, Chinese,Japanese atrocities, being dictated to by the UN after the Korean War-it's complex. But the point is, the politics should have never been brought to center stage -Ohno was the fall guy and he likely didn't know.
@AdarianDreamer well, I must say: due to the logic of my arguments, Adarian has come to a realization that i am and have always been right and has therefore stopped commenting haha. Just joking! i enjoyed the debate.
@raymikey141 Haha... just don't see the point in taking it further, we've both stated our cases, so time to move on. It was nice discussing this with you. Talk to later, man.
@raymikey141 Jesus christ just shut the fuck up you weirdo. South Koreans don't give a flying fuck about North Koreans and yes, the Austalian piece of garbage of a ref fucked over South Korea and handed U.S. medals TWICE. The Australian fuck stated PUBLICLY that he dislikes Koreans. He can burn in hell and as for Ohno, I really couldn't give a fuck but he's nothing compared to Kim or Korea in general in short track, proven by the world championships in 2002, and this year's world cup.
@Terror exactly what I'm talking about.Y don't u try to represent ur country with some class? It's guys like u that give Kor a bad name. Adarian is a classy guy-I'll listen to him. To me u r just another nationalistic zealot who, when a call doesn't go your way, screams racism, profanities, for the ref to burn in Hell, etcDisgusting sportsmanship! I'm not arguing the calls-but the Korean REACTION to them which is deplorable. I saw the race-agreed,was dumbfounded as to y the Kor girls team was DQ.
@Terror BUT 1) Hewitt did NOT hand a 2nd medal to the US-get ur facts straight. It was the Chinese team that benefitted from the DQ-AND, there were at least 2 other calls (one against a Cdn skater and the other against a Chinese) that were just mystifying-BUT, right or wrong, that's the nature of short track. 2) We weren't debating whether Ohno was the best-he clearly wasn't-we were talking about sportsmanship-and ur little rant doesn't help Adarian's argument. Grow up!
b) The judging panel had chances to fix the technical error that cost Yang Tae-Young gold but ultimately decided just to give it to Hamm. Not a huge deal, but just an instance where the USA was helped out by judges.
c) Your arguments about how the speedskating incidents became politically-fueled is what we disagreed the most on. Kim Dong-Sung being called for impeding Ohno was simply wrong and only happened because Ohno pretended to be impeded. Ohno was the only one targetted, for good reason.
@AdarianDreamer on point B-agreed!! The IOC messed up.So, how's that poor sportsmanship?
c) I saw the skate-u r right! the Korean should have won. But that happens ALL OF THE TIME in short track (look at this Olympics)- Koreans personalized it-sent out Ohno death threats, made toilet paper with his face on it, created fuck USA videos, the US speed skating team had to cancel its 2003 competition in Korea due to the outpouring of anti-US sentiment. Come on-because a 19 year old put up his hands?
@raymikey141 I don't condone the way some Koreans reacted to the decision, but it was a small percentage of people at the most. And what pissed people off the moreso about Ohno was how arrogantly he displays himself and even accused the Korean who won gold ahead of him in 2010 of cheating by impeding him. But once again, you have to understand that speedskating only has a niche following in Korea anyways. Its following is nothing like soccer, baseball, basketball, or even cybersports.
That's all I have to say about the speedskating controversy. I don't really care much about Olympics, and just to remind you again, this is a soccer video, so there are plenty of other places where you can argue about the specifics of those issues.
@Adarian here is my issue that I find disturbing-it's the source of my posts. I disagree with u-it is not a small % of Koreans, it's an overwhelming majority. ur out of touch with this, as are most Americans.judge hewitt from Aus made a similar call against the women's team-same guy as the Ohno call. Because of death threats by Korean bloggers he had to leave the Olympics, they even posted his address on net. there was a bomb threat of the Aus embassy, koreans called to ban Aus imports.
@raymikey141 I have heard about that incident, but I still find it extremely hard to believe that a majority of Koreans would resort to violence, much less follow speedskating. It only takes a few idiots to cause big trouble. In the World Cup, it's common for a few fans to get arrested for hooliganism. The 2002 WC was notable for its lack of violence because despite there being around 16 million Koreans partying on the streets of Seoul, there was not one reported case of violence.
@AdarianDreamer agreed. korea is not a violent country. I KNOW most Krs would NOT resort to violence. To me, it was a question of poor sportsmanship and a misplaced sense of what the competition is about. Korea, and the US does it too but more so with the Russians during the Cold War, personalized int'l sporting events-precisely b/c of the hist context-look at kor figure skater Kim yu-Na-read what she said was the poressure put on her to win. Y? b/c her arch rival was Japanese-Asada.
@raymikey141 Yes, today's Korea/Japan sports rivalry is commonly compared to the Cold War rivalry between USA/USSR. It's unfortunate that there's so much bad blood between the countries, but it's obviously a very old and complex historical rivalry.
@Adarian I think u r reading into Ohno's "arrogance".I've listened to him interviewed, I've read his blogs-he's a humble guy with a balanced perspective. he constantly praises the Kor speedskating team for being a powerhouse. When asked about "jostling" or controversial calls-he says, that's the nature of our crazy sport. I read his reaction to kor sentiment-he says he's perplexed, grew up with Korean friends. he made a split sec reaction during the Kim skate. y a nat'l campaign to hate him?
a) Factually the boxing match argument is correct. Roy Jones Jr should have won, but the IOC still stands by the decision, and the wine and dine allegations do not have solid proof. There are tons of controversial decisions in boxing and more recently MMA matches, so this really isn't anything rare.
@AdarianDreamer wrong! the IOC suspended 2 judges who scored the fight. IOC rules for how host countries could interact with judges, precisely because of the '88 Jones Jr.-Park fight , changed. The point is the Korean fans cheered in a frenzy the decision-Park was humiliated-he knew he lost-if you watch the video, a Korean official went over to the scorers table (highly against the rules) to watch the judges-it was a lynch mob mentality-the threat was implicit-y? b/c of the '84 Olympics.
@raymikey141 I said that the IOC stood by the decision because they chose not to retroactively award gold to Roy Jones Jr. Three judges were suspended after they admitted to making a mistake in the judging. The "wine and dine" allegations are just allegations. They may have happened but there is no solid proof, to my knowledge. Like I said, I don't dispute that Jones should have won, but Hamm winning gold over Yang TY is proof that USA like all other nations have benefited from errors as well.
@AdarianDreamer ur missing my point here! Agreed, ALL countries have benefitted from erroneous decisions. The problem was one of sportsmanship-the whole stadium endorsed the decision-was electrified-the judges feared for their lives-read the transcripts-it was payback for the '84 games. here's the problem-the US boxers in'84 were on the receiving end of favorbale decisions, but they also lost controversial close ones-it was just bad judging. There was no poor sportsmanship or judge tampering.
@raymikey141 There is always fervent Korean nationalism in every sporting event. They were electrified also because of how big of an upset it was for Park to beat Jones. Many of the crowd's sentiments were perhaps in retaliation for 84, but from their perspective, it's hard to call celebrating a chance at revenge poor sportsmanship. Also, the IOC suspended the 3 judges officially for making a mistake in judging, so the amount of tampering that actually happened is not clear.
@AdarianDreamer no offense here, but they weren't cheering Park's upset. They knew he lost-they were cheering the "payback" to the US after the '84 games-before the fight and during-the hostitily in the stands was palpable-read some of the interviews by non-Amers who watched that match. They all talk about a pervading sense of fear-uncertainty. At the '84 games the Koreans were highly touted but didn't live up to expectations bad judging-Korean coaches threatened US coaches-just wait until Seoul.
@raymikey141 To each his own, but you can't assume things like everyone in the crowd was cheering for payback and not because of Park's upset. All of that is speculation at best. To say that there is a mob mentality in Korea is an accusation that is completely groundless to me. I have no interest in continuing that debate because its pointless. The boxing match was 22 years ago. What's more recent was the 2002 World Cup where nationalistic passion was on peacefully and beautifully on display.
@AdarianDreamer you know what , you're a nice guy, a respectful debater. But you've either never seen or read about the Park-Jones Jr. fight or you just don't want to believe it happened. You clearly don't understand the historical context and why the crowd was reacting the way it did. Nevertheless, I've appreciated the debate and in my opinion, with the excpetion of the Ahn display, a well-hosted World Cup.
@AdarianDreamer at any rate Adarian-the world Cup game against greece today is impressive-Greece looks sluggish and korea looks sharp-it'll be interesting to see how far they go!
@raymikey141 Well it was a sluggish game by both teams, but Korea will definitely be satisfied with the 2-0 win. Good luck to the USA against England. It's one of the biggest first round games in the tournament.
@AdarianDreamer thanks-I'm not much of a soccer/football fan...don't even know who is on the US team...but I'm learning and I do like the atmosphere surrounding the World Cup and I'll follow most of the games.
@AdarianDreamer the announcers here(ESPN) were saying that Korea looks "awesome" and will threaten Argentina...good stuff..they're quick! USA got a lucky one--England looked a bit better--not that I'm an expert--just seemed that way--nevertheless, very exciting stuff.
@raymikey141 It was a good performance by USA to hold England. They got lucky with the English goalkeeper making a costly error, but regardless it was a great result for USA considering they were big underdogs. I don't know how good Korea's chances against Argentina are, but they'll give them their best shot and you never know what could happen.
@mikeyray141 Don't bother with this guy. You can see from his profile that he's a troll. All I'll say in response to explain what's wrong with everything he said is that Ahn's celebration was probably done to respond to the ignorance of American fans who try to rub in undeserved victories while mindlessly chanting "U-S-A!" like zombies. It was just a reminder that if America keeps endorsing the massive douchebaggery of athletes like Ohno, they have no right to lecture others sportsmanship.
@mikeyray141 Troll is a generic term to describe a troublemaker. Would you prefer the term sock or poser? I have not heard any of those accusations before, but I cannot speak for everyone in Korea as there are obviously at least a few idiots in every country. The celebration by Ahn had nothing to do with that and was more of tribute to the unfortunate Kim Dong-Sung. By the way, why did you remove your previous comments?
@mikeyray141 Your comments aren't really worth responding to, but just to clear up some factual inaccuracies, nobody I know in Korea is 'crying' about it. Hardly anyone cares about speed skating. It's usually Americans that bring things up that happened many years ago. Roy Jones Jr's fight was nothing compared to the travesties that America has gotten away with aside from Ohno, such as Paul Hamm beating out Yang Tae-Young because of a BS judging error.
@mikeyray141 It's also funny that you keep bringing up the collision between Korean speedskaters. In that race, there were 3 Korean speedskaters way ahead of Ohno. Two of them crashed but guess who still won gold? Yep, even when the opposition gift wraps a gold medal, Ohno still can't get it unless a ref literally gives it to him. The way you seem to celebrate winning by default (or in this case, failing at failing) is vintage American sportsmanship.
@mikeyray141 Speedskating is low on the sports hiearchy in Korea. It has a niche following in both Korea and USA. You can think what you want about what happened, I don't really care about that sport. The boxing match has been an issue of controversy, but it's hard to objectively debate how fair the outcome was without getting into specifics. I don't know how politically-fueled these events were. I tend to think of them as just bad blood between rival competitors. Nothing more, nothing less.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
You guys are disgusting. APOLO IS AMAZING AND DESERVES EVERY MEDAL HE HAS!!! It's the Korean's fault for blocking!! learn the sport, then you can start running your mouth.

I don't know how good Korea's chances against Argentina are, but they'll give them their best shot and you never know what could happen.

Hilarious. Nobody in the US had any idea what he was doing since we don't give a crap about speed skating.

One of the more creative celebrations...all because of the short track controversy at the Olympics that year.
