@timojouninpoika Stripped version is in open g, capo 4. Easy. Why do u think the man has played it that way for years. Think of the easiest way and that's what the man will do.
Actually, I read an interview with Keith where he said there were something like eight guitar tracks recorded and mixed in and out, and although open D was used, he believes some open G and standard tuning was used also, but he can't remember all of it.

hey man you are the best stones guitar teacher out there ! Can you please explain the strumming pattern ? I am just beginning to play the guitar and cant figure it out. Thanks.
@TheDami1969 He wasn't in open G for the original recording, although I believe he's done it onstage in open G since then. I believe it's open D with a capo for the recording (open D and E are the same fingerings, so it doesn't matter which you use as long as you adjust the capo placement).
Great variation on the Open G version - thanks - of course I've tuned to Open D and played that version, very easy but not the most prominent of the sounds on the record. The standard tuning guitar is the most prominent, and the F-Shape up and down the neck to re-create the exact sounds is just a bitch. In Open G I've always used the Capo on 4 like he does on Stripped and most live versions. How long have you been playing? And yes, nice house and nice guitars.
unfortunately this as a lot of rolling stones is hard to play on a martin dreadnought like the hdv28 that I have. What middle of the line guitar can be used instead?
@TheDami1969 I think you're probably right. Keith wasn't really using open G until after the Beggars Banquet period. I'll have to revisit this one to see if I can nail the studio version.
@privettricker True that. I can also relate to you choosing open G your cover. I cringe when I'm tuning my guitar to open E. I always feel like I'm going to break strings. Open D or G is way more practical.
@WadeMacKinnon Good point, there was a lot of Banquet in open E. He may have tuned to open D and used the capo though. I think I read the Keef recorded JJFlash in Open E with a capo because he liked to get the "tight sound"
Interesting how there's different versions of this song even from the Stones. I like doing it per the "Stripped" version - they move it down a 1/2 step to B. I capo the 4th fret in open G for that.
Yeah he used open E back in 68 but he uses open G now for the song now. Same with JJ Flash---back in 68 it was open E but now they use open G. I've been using a capo on the 4th for this song, JJ Flash, Tumbling Dice, Happy etc.
I am thankful that you recorded this one. I have been singing this for the last month. The Sabres enter the ice rink to this before their games. Great tune. Now I can figure it out.
he did it with his 5 string set up. It's in his book.

Liking that tobacco sunburst. Usually you see Doves in natural or cherry sunburst.

I got DGDGBD for open G tuning. Is that correct?
J1N256 5 months ago
@J1N256 Yes. I'm doing it in open G, but that's now how Keith originally did it.

you should walk people through the tuning before you do this - the fingering makes no sense at all
10ccalanarkush 6 months ago
I know you get a ton of posts, but I would love to see you play the standard tuning guitar part of this song from the remastered Banquet version.

@privettricker It would be great to have your lesson of the "Stripped" version - Is this too much to ask?

I read articles where Keith has said that the song should have been recorded in open g. It's what he now uses whenever the Stones play the song live.
MrDuojet 1 year ago
@MrDuojet Yeah, I'm guessing Keith hasn't used open D or open E onstage in a long while, if he ever did at all.

was wondering what youre doing on the 7th fret at the end of the chorus?this sounds like the version from stripped which i actually like

@brussels73 I'm covering the ADB strings at the 7th fret.

@privettricker I believe it was open E with a capo, but it was open g with a capo on 4th live.

@WadeMacKinnon The capo would make sense, because the way I did it, it's guaranteed to make your index finger cramp up from all the barring.

man this song is TOUGH on you arm
horbergaren 2 years ago
Yeah, the forearm of your fretting hand gets a little tired, I guess.
But imagine Keith doing a two-hour show, using essentially the same chord shapes all night long. He must have forearms like Popeye by now.
