Going to comment again, this guy beats every single light lyric tenor I've ever listened to. Brownlee and Pav crush the notes, not effortless, Kraus and Gedda have "covered" and disconnected voices, Mateuzzi's tone is too thin for my liking...seriously, Florez is the best bel canto tenor in all of history. Maybe Rubini was better. But I doubt it.
I find this version really nice...now, in his presentation of "Amis, amis", he completely avoids singing high C's withs sound "e" like in "arrachons Guillaume"...he rushes the next notes and it's a little bit disturbing (at least i find it so). This is one of the most difficult arias I know, especially the half tone scale at the end...Florez also avoids singing it the second time in order to get to the final High C(which I find outstanding, by the way). I find it interesting, but i prefer Gedda's
Pavarotti's version is better, because Florez has less power and charisma. That's all. I ADMIRE Flores and ALL his Rossini arias, including this. BUT, anyway, his voice lacks a little bit strength that Guillaume Tell MUST have.
Pffffffffffff whatever people may say, this guy is an wonderful "opera alien" ! He knows what to do or not to sing with his voice. (He cancelled the next "Rigoletto" he signed for the year because he could feel that it didn't suite his voice for the moment. Don't say he's gonna gonna break his voice, he's smart and has such a talent !!! Bravissimo Juan Diego ! We'll talk about that in 15 years.
The brave tenor given the Olympic task of hurling out the famous top Cs is Juan Diego Florez, and when he does you know that you're in the presence of one of the greatest tenori di grazia (``graceful tenors'') of our time. He hits each of Tonio's treacherous notes with an unerring ping, and with no hint of strain. He doesn't slide up to them but attacks them staccato, just as the score demands.
Alfredo Brotons Muñoz, Levante - El Mercantil Valenciano, 28 September 200
I am not a fan of Mr. Florez, I do acknowledge his talent but I dont like him for most of the part. But this performance of Arnold's aria is gorgeous, by far one of the best I have ever heard...Thanks Juan Diego! :)
What a fine performance of this aria and such a pleasure to hear in original French. He should never sing the part..even in a really small house...but what a treat!
Agree. Translations miss a lot of the original - Even for its beauty and sonority, Italian cannot replace French originals - "D'Aldorf les chemins sont ouverts" - this you don't find in the Italian. Magnificent Juan Diego but he should not venture in dramatic roles, Rossini really went dramatic in Guillaume, so rossinian tenors should stick to Barbiere, Cenerentola, etc.
:) Yes. Unbelievable look at the end A look that says "Ive done it", a look showing relief after a lot of tension, a look I just love since it shows Florez as a human being not only a "singing machine"
Well I think Florez can give the best and the worse (his Verdi interpretation for the moment but it will surely improve). That evening he really gave his best going sometimes beyond his limits. It this concert, all the arias (including the Bellini one youve posted) are just spectacular renditions. I just regret the Puritani aria (A te o cara) was not broadcast. It was announced with the program I do not know whether he sung it or not or if it was cut for the broadcast.
BRAVO BRAVO BRAVO BRAVO BRAVO!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you thank you for posting this!!!! Absolutely wonderful!!!! Would have been better with the chorus filling in the gaps, but still a phenomenal performance of what must be THE TOUGHEST tenor aria EVER!!!!

Juan Diego is a great singer but to preserve his voice he should not sign these heavier roles. Leave them for lyrics, you are a leggero.

moiselechat 2 years ago 2
Ce qui va :
- la présentation physique de Monsieur Florez
- son engagement lyrique complet
- sa prodigieuse intelligence dans les récitatifs
- son timbre terriblement séduisant
*
