The first time I heard this I thought it was some guy with a sequencer just making weird mathematical music. Then I had a chance to see that it was being played by 6 people on clarinets and the real genius of the piece came through.
I happened to discover Glassworks while reading Kate Chopin's The Awakening. I would listen to it using headphones while reading in bed. It created a strong association between the two for me.
Listening to this track in particular now makes me think of Edna Pontellier first learning to swim on her own in during a warm summer night in the Gulf of Mexico. It was the beginning of her awakening that was started by listening to a piano performance that emotionally overwhelmed her.
I was once driving down the highway listening to this song, and the emotional impact was so strong I had to pull over and just sit there and listen to it. Incredible stuff.
This sounds a lot like the theme from watchmen. I know some of glasses work is on the sound-track, but is this one? Perhaps a rearranged version or something other.
Why do people post bits of sarcasm dressed up as critical evaluation? It only signposts their glaring ignorance. Don't like something? Then say why or shut up.
im not negatively criticizing the piece, im just tryin to find out the general theme of it. obviously there is none. personally i would think it depicts fluidity of some sort. love this song
Philip Glass picked up a lot from west african modalities, and southeast african polyrhythm, and this is one tune that shows some of these influences.
I absolutely love this piece by the way, it is so utterly cosmic, viewing a hyperdimensional grid of transcendental technological existence.
Sufjan is pretty enamored with minimalism - you can definitely hear Glass's influence, along with Steve Reich - "Out of Egypt" off of Illinois is almost a straight Reich rip-off (I still love it).
You're so right. Sufjan is one of the only artists out their to have drawn a competent connection between Pop and Minimalism and I think he deserves a bit more praise for it than he gets now.
I know it's not the point... but I love the dance music sensibilities in Glass' music.
His pieces may have lots of different time signatures, but they always seem to jump into each other so there's always a sort of 'beat' to his compositions.
you can find The Second Dream Of The High Tension Line Step by La Monte Young on youtube.
and if you want to compare your answers with other's just email me I'll send you the most common things people see in the music so you know if you're off the track or not.
I also need impressions for this piece, The Second Dream Of The High Tension Line Step by La Monte Young. so please send a 2nd questionnaire with your impressions about Young's piece written in any of the boxes---just make sure to write "Young/Second Dream" before starting to write so that I know it's not for one of the 3 other pieces that the questionnaire is designed for.
Thanks. just listen to the music and give your impressions/ free association comments. it's actually pretty fun.
Hi! Would you like to help on a study to better understand cultural evolution, memetics, trends, and the influence of zeitgeists on music and human activities in general? If so please fill in this questionnaire--it's quick and fun. You just have to give your impressions on 3 pieces of music.

1997, HK. On the KCR from Lu Wo to Mongkok. Dusk. The train is empty, lights of villages outside: rain spitting on the window...
Knowing and not knowing....Wishing the train would never stop...The Floe's French Horns... La La La La La La...One day I'll find home...But even there I will be a stranger...La La La La La....
Anyone can fill in a questionnaire on the reception of musical signs. Making music often requires training but understanding it and reacting to its connotations is a rather universal competency among humans. The reception will vary depending on your culture though.
So everyone can give his impressions about the 3 pieces I'm studying, and it will be very helpful for my master's project.
I filled out your survey. I wasn't really thrilled about the first piece, and I hadn't heard it before, and maybe it just didn't grab me. "Floe" was the first piece from Glass I had ever heard, in a composition class, and my life made a sharp left turn. I'm a chemist now. Unfortunately.
I love Einstein On The Beach as well... it was my second love after Glassworks... Opening, to this day, is one of my top three favorite songs of all time...
I get the chills every time at 0:28 I love the chills :)
