  • I get the chills every time at 0:28 I love the chills :)

  • When the big bang happened, the universe had this playing on it's iPod.

  • dayyyum son, dis shit be rockin in da fuckin streeeets niccuuuhhhhzzzz

  • Ive got 4 of these playing over top of each other right now, just slightly out of sync, and it barely sounds any different...lol

  • Too minimalistic. I know it's a minimalism piece but, GAHHH

  • You don't get into Glass; Glass gets into you - and the louder the better!!

  • more like Peacebone by Animal Collective

  • I imagine this to be in a sad part then everything is getting redemed

  • The first time I heard this I thought it was some guy with a sequencer just making weird mathematical music. Then I had a chance to see that it was being played by 6 people on clarinets and the real genius of the piece came through.

  • this is what happens when a mathematician tries to make music. great stuff

  • I happened to discover Glassworks while reading Kate Chopin's The Awakening. I would listen to it using headphones while reading in bed. It created a strong association between the two for me.

Listening to this track in particular now makes me think of Edna Pontellier first learning to swim on her own in during a warm summer night in the Gulf of Mexico. It was the beginning of her awakening that was started by listening to a piano performance that emotionally overwhelmed her.

  • I see flashing lights and lots of shots of futuristic bald people opening their eyes lol.

  • sublime

  • I never get tired of this music.

  • Brilliant!

  • I was once driving down the highway listening to this song, and the emotional impact was so strong I had to pull over and just sit there and listen to it. Incredible stuff.

  • @yardbirdsweet

Same thing happened to me, I was driving in a snowstorm in rural Canada at 2am and it was one of the most bizarre experiences I've ever had.

  • This sounds a lot like the theme from watchmen. I know some of glasses work is on the sound-track, but is this one? Perhaps a rearranged version or something other.

  • no that was "Prophecies" from the film Koyaanisqatsi

  • I see protons and electrons moving around an atom.

  • the piece to me represents the constant motion of life.

  • i see caterpillars crawling when i listen to this.

  • this piece is moving

    its brillient

  • Why do people post bits of sarcasm dressed up as critical evaluation? It only signposts their glaring ignorance. Don't like something? Then say why or shut up.

  • anyone find it slightly creepy and awesome near 4:00 where the main theme just comes come back in?

  • : ) yes

  • it represents music in fiths. philip glass has more good work, check out glassworks

  • what is this music supposed to represent?

  • why does it have to represent anything? Just actively listen to it and become engrossed.

  • im not negatively criticizing the piece, im just tryin to find out the general theme of it. obviously there is none. personally i would think it depicts fluidity of some sort. love this song

  • Oh, I didn't think you were. I was just saying, pieces of music don't have to represent anything that can be put into words :)

  • Stunning.

I had shivers in the beginning.

  • This song has this sort of transcendental beauty. The sound is truly transporting. You lose yourself in it.

I could only wish to hear this live.

  • Jean Sibelius 5th Finale

  • @vituraoy I'm glad I'm not the only one who heard that! haha

The horn line is so similar

  • Philip Glass picked up a lot from west african modalities, and southeast african polyrhythm, and this is one tune that shows some of these influences.

I absolutely love this piece by the way, it is so utterly cosmic, viewing a hyperdimensional grid of transcendental technological existence.

  • I really like this! It seems to be similar to a classical piece I heard a couple of times in movies. I think it was played with the french horns.

  • Yo estoy interesado en tu estudio.

    I'm interested in your study.

You can learn many in the film the hours, the music is made by Philip Glass.

    Gracias.

  • the music by glass and radiohead help me in times of struggle to remember that god is with us.

  • struggle on. Great Griff in Heaven will not help you

  • i remember that we are with us ...

  • ...you're kidding, right?

  • oh wow... this has got to be the inspiration for the jenova song in ff7

    5/5

  • heyyyy good point!

awesome song. i can't stop listening to it.

  • omg..this is...amazing, im just getting into philip glass thanks to House using Company.

  • I would love to salvage an MP3 of this.

  • buy the cd and get it on your computer ;)

  • I was listening to this once heading out to Massachusets, and it was just one of the most beautiful things. It was indescribeable.

  • beautiful, takes me to a beautiful place

  • Has anybody noticed the similarity between his music and Sufjan Stevens'. Particularly some of the stuff on Illinoise. Just a curiosity!!

  • Sorry...just to clarify - i meant this piece specifically as opposed to his music in general.

  • that's interesting...i didn't really notice until you brought it up. i guess it's the instrumentation choice that really does it.

  • Sufjan is pretty enamored with minimalism - you can definitely hear Glass's influence, along with Steve Reich - "Out of Egypt" off of Illinois is almost a straight Reich rip-off (I still love it).

  • You're so right. Sufjan is one of the only artists out their to have drawn a competent connection between Pop and Minimalism and I think he deserves a bit more praise for it than he gets now.

  • WoW

  • Magnifico tutto

    musica e video

  • I'm looking for Glass Baritone's operas, if it do exist.

  • I know it's not the point... but I love the dance music sensibilities in Glass' music.

His pieces may have lots of different time signatures, but they always seem to jump into each other so there's always a sort of 'beat' to his compositions.

    Awesome!

  • i lisiend to this piece in a music exam then my friend turned to e and said u would like this piece coz its odd and i luv it now lol

  • what instrument makes the strange "clonk" noise? sorry i can't be more specific

  • i think you're referring to the bass clarinet

  • I'm pretty sure you're talking about the synthesizers in the background...

  • you can find The Second Dream Of The High Tension Line Step by La Monte Young on youtube.

and if you want to compare your answers with other's just email me I'll send you the most common things people see in the music so you know if you're off the track or not.

cheers, and thanks for your help!!!!

  • I also need impressions for this piece, The Second Dream Of The High Tension Line Step by La Monte Young. so please send a 2nd questionnaire with your impressions about Young's piece written in any of the boxes---just make sure to write "Young/Second Dream" before starting to write so that I know it's not for one of the 3 other pieces that the questionnaire is designed for.

Thanks. just listen to the music and give your impressions/ free association comments. it's actually pretty fun.

  • Hi! Would you like to help on a study to better understand cultural evolution, memetics, trends, and the influence of zeitgeists on music and human activities in general? If so please fill in this questionnaire--it's quick and fun. You just have to give your impressions on 3 pieces of music.

Here's the form (add dot and remove space!):

If you are interested by the research/ results, email me !

  • 1997, HK. On the KCR from Lu Wo to Mongkok. Dusk. The train is empty, lights of villages outside: rain spitting on the window...

Knowing and not knowing....Wishing the train would never stop...The Floe's French Horns... La La La La La La...One day I'll find home...But even there I will be a stranger...La La La La La....

  • haha, you're a strange dude. Why not ask actual musicians around you to fill out your questionnairre?

  • Anyone can fill in a questionnaire on the reception of musical signs. Making music often requires training but understanding it and reacting to its connotations is a rather universal competency among humans. The reception will vary depending on your culture though.

So everyone can give his impressions about the 3 pieces I'm studying, and it will be very helpful for my master's project.

here's the link again for the questionnaire:

    Have a nice day!

  • I filled out your survey. I wasn't really thrilled about the first piece, and I hadn't heard it before, and maybe it just didn't grab me. "Floe" was the first piece from Glass I had ever heard, in a composition class, and my life made a sharp left turn. I'm a chemist now. Unfortunately.

  • this is real fucking good

  • Love the twinklyness of this song :D Reminds me of snow falling

  • Awesome piece of music, from best album Glass has ever done.

  • I am just getting into Glass, what would be some good albums to pick up?

  • If you like this get Glassworks and Koyannisqatsi.

  • And maybe The Photographer, or Songs From Liquid Days, too.

  • Glassworks, The Photographer, Music with Changing Parts.

  • I really like Uakti.

  • aknaten

  • I love Einstein On The Beach as well... it was my second love after Glassworks... Opening, to this day, is one of my top three favorite songs of all time...

  • The visuals are appropriately very minimal.

  • @mikeockurts As ur brain

  • Hi everyone!

I'm studying 3 minimalist pieces for my master's project. Please help me and fill in this questionnaire I've done :

fd2.formdesk(dot)com/tagg/ChausseauMinimal . All you have to do is listen to 3 pieces and give your impressions--it might be fun and exciting!

    Good luck !

    Nicolas
