@TSpock1701 Agreed! Im playing it in my jazz combo class right now. It's physically challenging, but the progression is simple. Love it. So much room for soloists.
with this song I received the gift of jazz from one of my best friends, best of his generation Puerto Rican trumpet player Juancito Torres, at age 19. I am now 52
and an authority in jazz (if I may say so), yet Red Clay continues to be my favorite jazz piece. Rest in peace both Juancito and Freddie.
Hey guys, i have a version of this song from a dj mix and its noticeably faster and i know it wasnt just sped up cuz even the soloing and the drums are a bit different. does any one know where i could find this version?
AH-HA! The song I was lookin' for was Collage by Ramsey Lewis... My apologies folks. The bassline in that song is somewhat similar to the bassline in Red Clay tho...
There's a song I'm lookin' for that sounds like Red Clay... It has a similar bassline, but the bass is much heavier. The song very mellow, and beautiful, is mostly keyboard, and almost sounds like a Bob James composition, but it's also very chaotic 3/4ths of the way through. I just can't figure it out. Anybody have any clues?
there's a song by Emerson, Lake, & Palmer called "Tarkus", where about 5 minutes in, there's a slow part with a bassline a lot like this. The whole thing's 20 minutes, and it switches from very chaotic to calm, to chaotic again, and the last part is calm too. but check it out, that might be what you're looking for
I started with this same kind of music, learned the Trumpet when i was in the 3rd grade, and ended up Rappin, I aint jackin off what I got no more, Im comming back home :)
WOW!, WOW! WOW!...two other girls, and myself did a modern dance routine to this way back in 73 or 74....memories..thanks so much for posting...share love, be peace...
Now you have less than a week. Don't waste your energy being nervous. Increase your practice time - as close to 24/7 as you can get it - get your part the way you want it, technically and - then just practice perfecting it, according to your style.
I always seem to hear the theme of "Sunny"; everything seemed to get more and more electrified and electronified in the 70ties and 80ties, with a natural musical deficits 'till the new "instruments" became more get grasped since the nineties or so, I think; the trumpet doesn't seem to feel too well next the others.
@nikomakarov The Real Book transcribes it in Cmin but the album version is actually in C-sharp min

@emon64 probably because the clip ended while Ron Carter was still playing the bass. The original track is about 12 minutes long.
