As for what sociological merits this venture had, I couldn't tell you, I never studied sociology. What I do know is what works, and this does not, no matter how you try to dress it up. The competition was ahead of Google on this one, plain and simple, and even competitors only have success marketing this sort of thing to children, mainly.

IMVU does have better graphics but it was a far cry from Lively. The thing about Lively is that it was completely customizable. You didn't really see any two avaters that were completely alike nor did you see any two rooms that were the same. You could use invisible floors to extend the rooms as far out as you wanted. Someone created a roof top bar. Another person took the void room and built an entire city complete with streets a building with a restaraunt on the ground floor and a roof...
top look out where you could see the city. Plus you didn't have to aquire things by earning points like IMVU. This was a chat, you didn't have to play any games if you didn't want to. You could make your room public or private and you didn't have to have your own room either. It was entirely customizable. I haven't yet seen another 3d chat that compares.
Perhaps we should all consider petitioning to bring Lively back? Personally, I like it the best. Please note that SECOND LIFE is meant for ADULTS ONLY and that Teen Second Life forces you to use a credit card in order to play. :( IMVU I heard isn't that great, and Lively had great charm to it. I had fun chatting on it with other friends, and the emotes and avatars were just adorable and appealing. I loved streaming YouTube videos too! :( My avatars were great. Ah Lively, I miss you so much. :(
Yes, but unfortunately both are populated mainly by shallow skanks who can't spell. I only talk to people on IMVU I've met outside of there, because God knows it's hard to find a decent person inside.

Lively showed enormous potential for bringing together communities from across the virtual worlds in a common space. It had some serious tech issues that were promised to be corrected but never were. I am personally disappointed that Google has abandoned this visionary concept, but hope some other enterprising soul will build on this exciting opportunity, and do it right. We need something like Lively, something that brings together the MUVE communities to foster collaboration & communication.
