  • Ontario SP-10 or Ka-Bar Heavy Bowie? Thanks

  • wicked blade!

  • all my firends boast about there kabar USMC knives they take when we go hit the trails but now that I have my heavy Bowie they can shove it.

  • just wondering if you have any heavy wood spliting done with this? any other heavy working?

  • @JpainGLK17 check out his southeast firemakingvideo

  • Guys always pick a knife that the blade goes all the way down to the handle and is all of the handle!! thats the sight of a good knife.

  • @TheWheels1965 exactly

  • ahhh, blades were so cheap in '08

  • The kabar has been radiused (sp) noss4 has shown what the tang looks like on his website. Great knife

  • and why not 1095? because is difficult to work? or heat?

  • Ever watch that show Workaholics?

  • im seriously torn between :the kabar large heavy bowie, the ontario marine raider, and the ontario sp 50. what i need is a large survival knife that weighs less than a tomahawk or hatchet and can be lashed or strapped to the side of a pack, im leaning towards the large heavy bowie since it doesent have the out the side removal like the marine raider and its cheaper than the sp 50 gen 2 :/

  • @SleepyFox79 I know that feel bro.

I went with the Ka-bar. Got it on Amazon for 42.88. The cheapest of the three.

  • @Bigl8317 aaand i totally forgot the ontario sp5, which is what im leaning towards now. now just to find a place that has it in stock for a reasonable price

  • I have been looking at this and the Ontario gen II sp50 that you also did a review on. They are both very similar with somewhat bad sheaths. Which won would you prefer over the other?

    Thanks

  • Please respond.

Which is better for the money? The Large Heavy Bowie by Ka-Bar, or, the SP 5? I like the both of them and they are around the same price. I just need user advice.

    Thanks.

  • hehe... Heavy doodie

  • Don't know if anyone will see this after 40+ pages of comments, but I was using this knife on my first 4-day solo backpacking trip to split wood and it totally fractured on the first log I tried. I cutting through a tough piece of wood about 7 inches in diameter (aspen maybe?). It was a warm 70 degrees, so temperature shouldn't have been a problem. I was striking it with a smaller log... is there something I should have avoided? No wet or sap-hardened wood?

  • @Bicx can you email pics of that? wow thats crazy... i hope you are lying! LOL i just bought one

  • @ST3VI3Q Probably cause you have been surfing Scarlet Johannson videos, duh. -- Veri

  • I've had mine for a couple of months and have put it too many mostly camping but i usually keep it under my seat in the truck, because i always seem to have cut really thick rope or wood. the edge retention on this blade is amazing you can use it for food prep

  • i thought youve reviewed every knife so you moved on

  • I just took this up to Northern MI a few weeks ago, it was the 1st fire I've made 100% with a knife & it was awesome. I'm a knife convert, I'm going up to the UP later next week & the hatchets probably staying at home or in the jeep. This knife rocked. Thanks for the recommendation.

  • It's the closet thing to perfect in the Bowies.

  • hey nutnfancy

im currently looking for a good yet expendable survival knife and i currently have my eyes on the cold steel true flight thrower

any opinions? i think it is perfect

big blade, full tang (in fact, there is no real handle, the handle is just the metal used to make the blade wrapped in paracord) and very cheap

  • sorry to be a nag but the city is pronounced OH-LEE-ANN just to make you a little more knowledgeable

  • why dont you just call it the LHB (large heavy bowie)

  • Damn you nutnfancy!! Because of you I brought one of these, and I love it! (:

  • this knife is amazing and chops through wood like butter also scary looking and two nights aggo wen i was fishing and somone tryd to steel my car i think it may have saved my life and i wasnt scared at all having it so thank u nutnfancy for helpin me pic this knife lol

  • sick vid man, and sick knife i just subbed. awesome tips

  • Nice video, no mater what kind of survival I will be doing in the future I will be carying a big knife, for me 1-2lbs on my belt is not much. Like you videos and I just subbed =)

  • I am a sales rep for this company, Hit me up!!

  • Hey nutn, I'm in the market for a midsize survival knife for hiking, backpacking. Trying to find a rat-7 to handle before I purchase and have been unsuccessful so far. Did stumble across a ka-bar bull dozier knife and it looks intriguing. The sheath looks excellent from pics I've seen. Wondered if you have had any hands on experience with the dozier knife and how the Aus-8 steel would hold up in the wilderness for fire making and General tasks

  • Oh hey! Have you thought about intellectus 424 diet (just google it)? Ive heard some amazing things about it and my mate lost tons of weight with it.

  • Yes, I need this type of knife like...everything I do.

  • it said on the box ,made in taiwan

  • I can't find this model on the Ka-bar website :(

  • Hey nut, I'm buying a microtec ultratec. I know I know their expensive but their cool and I want one lol. But sense I am paying over 200 for it I am having trouble picking a blade type. I will b using it as a pocket knife for everyday use and for self defense if ever needed. I like the dagger style but they dnt seem as sturdy as the reg or the tan to style. Any suggestions?

  • I think we all need a little fitzen in out lives don't we? when is nutn meeting with fitzen next? :D

  • Ka-Bar Heavy Bowie or Becker BK9?

  • Comment removed

  • TO SEE THIS KNIFE IN ACTION: SEARCH: "Survival Skills: Firemaking, Southeast US by Nutnfancy"

  • to see this knife in action...

  • just got one via ebay!! thanks nutn, your reviews have been great and have been large deciding factors of my purchases (G19 and this Kabar!)

  • its pronounced O-lee-anne, haha about an hour from me.. just givin ya a hard time lol, excellent review man. i think this is the fixed blade i will be buying for my hiking trips

  • No jimping... F that.

  • hey nutnfancy, would you prefer this over the ontario marine raider?? im going to buy one or the other and cant decide lol

  • @fetus2genius1 Well I know a response from me isn't as good as one from Nutn but maybe I can help

The Ka-Bar Heavy Bowie is lighter making it easier to carry but it won't chop as well as the Ontario SP-10

The Ka-Bar has a shorter blade (1/2 Inches difference) than the Ontario so it won't have the same span

The Ka-Bar is FFG so it should split better than the Ontario

The Ontario has more reach and a guard for combat purposes

    The Sheath is on par

Kabar is Taiwan the Ontario is USA

  • nevvermind , i was thinking about to buy it until i saw: MADE IN TAIWAN

  • @falconrypk Try the Ontario Marine Raider

  • @CutleryNovice Holy Crap, what a beast!

  • @Pimpzilla300 And it's all American,hell ya!

  • Comment removed

  • how much did that knife cost? im looking for a big and cheep survival knife that i can use for much for example hunting, fishing, stripping wood e.tc ?

  • @mrsachimi1 look on amazon. They have very good pricing and usually ship free

  • thanks!

  • sorry but it's pronounced "oh-lee-in

  • @12:47? was that the 1211 Fighter knife with the OD green handle? looks like you don't purchase knives w/serrations near the hilt do you prefer this, or no?

  • should i get a ka-bar heavy bowie for hunting or a becker BK2?

  • are you shiting me? i just bought one of those and their made in Taiwan!?

  • A few weeks ago I ordered one of these from the US, after having seen this video. And I got it today. On my birthday. Talk about timing, huh? Sits on my hip now. No great need for it here, indoors, in my apartment, in the city, but I still like the feel of it on my hip. Thanks for the tip, Nutn!

  • This is made in Taiwan and is a piece of crap. The steel is brittle. Why don't you promote something made in the USA or Canada?

  • @andygray LOL! :D

  • Is the "Ka-Bar Bowie Black Finish" on Amazon for $49.99 the same knife as this? When I Googled "Ka-Bar large heavy bowie" that's what showed up, but I just want to make sure...

  • "ive been known to that.... how ya doin" hahah best nutnfancy line ever

  • Why the flaming voice?

  • I got one Ka-Bar Heavy Bowie recently, and am pretty happy with it. So far I have mainly used it for splitting a lot of wood, batoning, and some carving.I was splitting hard-ass, twisted-grain, california live oak. It worked just as well as the cheapy hatchet we use for most of our firewood. I still want to try it out for skinning/butchering cause I am not so sure how well it will work in that arena.

  • unfortunately theyre all lead-laced and made in china.... the chinese don't want to fight america, so they try to kill americans with lead poisoning.

  • For a soldier who wants a good combat blade would you reccomend this the becker bk7 or something like the kbd1?

  • @littledude2292 What do you mean by "combat blade"? A utility knife like a KA-BAR, or a combat knife like the Fairbairn-Sykes stiletto? Do you want something to use at camp, or something to kill a sentry with?

  • I need some opinions here! Im debating between SP10 Marine Raider and the Kabar Large Heavy Bowie. The specs are nearly the same and i was wondering if Nutn or some of the viewers had any experience with either knife and could help me out here!

  • @asturza go the kabar

  • @asturza I have both. SP10 is heavier, 1/4" thick, has a narrow swedge that can damage a baton. Ka-Bar is lighter, more versatile, but 3/16" thick, which might make it harder to baton. I've hiked with it on my belt, no problem.

  • @asturza Also, the SP10 is made in the U.S., the heavy bowie is made in Taiwan.

  • Kbar or super sog Bowie

  • hey nutnfancy what do think is better kabar heavy bowie or ranger rd9

  • @gordonluke1996 ,i would put my money on the ka-bar.The ranger RD-9 has a handle that feels like holding a 2x4.The handle of the Ka-bar heavy Bowie is superb. Not a minor detail...

  • homer street XD

    (Simpson´s homer O_o)

  • I just bought my first carbon steel blade and i was wondering how do i store it? it came with a cordura sheath and I know i need to keep it oiled but can I store it in the sheath?

  • @EvanN108 You can store it in a nylon sheath with no problem. Just keep it in a dry place and it will be fine. Leather sheaths are where the problems start.

  • dude i just love your videos..

  • do you know what tang the heavy bowie has

  • I got mine and loving it

  • i just got one of these and mine is 1085 stanless steel not 1095 why is that? also is 1085 good?

  • @tony2timekilla Hey Nutin I have the same question , the heavy bowie that I can get at my place has a 1085 steel , is that still optimal for heavy duty jobs in the woods ?

  • Thats like naming your car automobile... AHAHA!!!

  • I purchased both this knife and the sawvivor, per your recommedation. I used both this summer, as well as your methods. Everything worked great, and the knife rocks,

  • What does nutn think would be a better all around wilderness blade the Kabar Heavy Bowie or the Ontario SP !0 Marine Raider?

  • love your reviews you don't say um GOOD WORK !!!! theirs a subscribe.!!!!!

  • Wide blades are less useful as a combat knife as you got to drive that thing through the ribs.

  • thats a nice knife

  • You know what I think? I think Nutn' should have a book of knives... in it would be all of the good, bad, and the ugly. There would something like Nutn's top 10, best survival, best EDC, etc. Then just a generic section with the Nutnfancy Likability scale of, say, 100 or so good knives.

The only downside, it would make me broke.

  • Comment removed

  • I didn't name my car? D:

  • 00:57 Made in Taiwan lmao

  • @Qthematrixxxx Buy one. Watch the field test nutnfancy does. Watch K-Bar 14 1/4 Bowie Knife destruction and that series of vid. The thing ships shaving sharp. The day I got it I wasn't paying attention (watching a movie, dumbass me) and sliced the shit out of my thumb with zero effort. My kitchen steel gets it back to factory sharpness after heavy use. The thing is BEAST. Awesome blade. I'm a country of manufacture snob but this thing shatters the paradigm.

  • @HotPocketAirsoft what makes u think im twelve and im in the midst of uploading a video with a couple of them

  • because of this knife i completed my full ka bar collection

  • @MrMacrulz youre 12 years old. lets see your collection then!!!

  • for christmas im planing to get the ka-bar large heavy bowie and i wanted your opinion on a survival knife.do you think this would be a good survival blade? thank you.

  • @tji0714 Watch Nutnfancy's video on fire making in the southeast. He uses the Large Heavy Bowie in that video and it proves itself to be a great survival knife. I bought one on his recommendation, and it works great for me too.

  • Kabar dissapoints me on one knife... the fighter. Its an 8'' blade. You would think it would be at least 3/16 but no... Kabar doesnt get the point. MAKE IT THICKER=MORE DURABLE ugh.... come on guys

  • I can't believe the trailmaster knife costs $297. What's so special about this knife that makes it cost that much more than the Big Bowie? Are they just trying to rip people off?

  • @ryguy2598 because cold steel are scammers, Never buy that overpriced vg1/420j version, the edge is brittle, their kraton will pull your skin until they blister unless you wear gloves, then it wears off, and the "gaurd" on the trailmaster doesnt offer any extra protection compared to the hand molded kabar yet the cold steel gaurds are unergonomic and get in the way lol

btw, did you hear him in this video saying his cold steel broke? yow

  • @ryguy2598 simple, because some people pay it. Not a rip off, just good business, I won't pay it, but many will.

  • @ryguy2598 I think you're thinking of the San Mai II version of the Trailmaster. That steel is expensive but you're right...their price is out of line. The Kabar Heavy Bowie still dominates for the money!

  • @nutnfancy the san mai version deserves 250 usd (ebay price) cause its kinda lifetime knive.kabar isn't but i sure love it!i m on to buy one h.bowie.you can do the same job with 60-70 usd?yeeeeeah

  • @ryguy2598 I myself don't have enough money for the san mai version but i do own an sk-5 trailmaster and and can tell you the design and handle materials are awesome!! I do own a san mai master tanto and hve used it for a few years as a hunting blade. one particular experience that stands out is when i dressed up a ground blind with some tall grass and small trees that i cut with my tanto. It held an edge great, very little if any detectable dulling. no chipping despite freezing temp.

  • @ryguy2598 now couple the great edge qualities with the fact that the steel is laminated as to nearly assure no total blade failure (snapping in half) also the san mai trail master is convex ground. that increases edge retention, cutting performance and unfortunately cost. but if you look up he performance of the blade here on youtube, you may find that if you need rust resistance along with the performance (probably even better) of carbon steel then it might justify the cost.

  • @ryguy2598 yes, and they do that by making a bunch of fat people cut inanimate objects. cold steel is full of shit, if you wanna get a good knife get a benchmade, kabar, S&W, SOG or make on yourself so that you can pick features that YOU want in your knife.

  • nutin: "but i have had a recon scout break on me and i was, how you doin?"

    me: "im good, thanks"

    nutin: "pissed"

  • I'm considering this for my backpack. The model at my local store is made in tiwann and sports 1085 carbon, not 1095. Is it worth it?

  • NutN....if you had to recommend one knife to get, for a beginner, for cmaping and hiking and such, which would it be? I can't figure what one to get.

  • @jamillathekilla just my 2 cents worth bud, choice of ka-bar marine (lightwieght high value) Ka-bar Heavy Bowie (heavy wieght highvalue ) or the Esee jungals 10" great all round knife and can be bought for around 160.00 great value. hope that helps bro. =]

  • @jamillathekilla The Gerber "Big Rock" Camp Knife is around $30 ($25 on Amazon.com) where I live, has decent steel, full-flat ground, 8 oz., and has pretty good ergonomics, and a 5 inch blade. Great knife for beginners. Hope that helps. =)

  • i might get this instead of the trail master cus i saw one fail and it kinda disappointed me :(

  • Update of my own.. got my large heavy bowie.. been a long time coming... out of the box.. CRAZY SHARP... cut myself really bad on the thumb just being careless lol. Taiwanese blade- WHO CARES IT ROCKS. When it comes to sharpening it- I started with a really fine stone and finished with a steel. Holy crap I think it's sharper than it was factory. Easy, easy to shave with. If you don't have a steel get one. This thing is so beast.

  • Hey nutn/veri! Just broswing for knives as per usual, and I'm wondering what you'd reccomend - The Ka-Bar Heavy Bowie, or Ontario sp10?

Thanks ! Keep up the great work!

  • You should have a list somewhere of all the ratings of the knives you've reviewed. I'd love to add some of your 10/10 rated knives to my shopping list.

  • Hey nutnfancy. i have a friend enlisting in the military, he is looking at a few knives. what would you recomend, the ka bar heavy bowie, the becker bk7, the rat 7 with d2 or the rat 7 with 1095?

  • I want to buy one of these for defense, but I don't want to scrape it up and potentially dent/break it if I use it for batoning.

I know this knife is pretty inexpensive, but do you know of any knives that are even cheaper than this, that can survive extensive batoning?

  • IM GETTING A KABAR 1184!!!

  • i find wilderness survival kind of fun.

  • Comment removed

  • my mouth is watering

  • I've noticed that going over the blade (not the edge!) with 1000 grit wet sandpaper and a little bit of nail polish remover makes a big difference when it comes to chopping. The black finish becomes very smooth, which allows the massive blade to pass through wood with less resistance.

    Just a tip I thought I'd share...

  • I think survival knives are great but they're intended for short unexpected outdoor survival situations. This is why I prefer a small axe for chopping if I'm going camping, that's what its for. I think this is why some of these knives are breaking when it comes to heavy chopping, they're not designed with that entirely in mind. Having said that a knife is more versatile for different tasks so its a good call to have both.

  • can you sand off the black on the blade and polish it to make it metal/chrome color?

  • @randomreptar21 It wont be chrome, but it will be polished steel.

  • @randomreptar21

Yes, but the black paint protects the blade from rust... I'm not sure if it's a good idea to remove it completely.

  • Heyy Doez anybody kno da name of the Kabar Knife Thatz black and it has a oval hole in the blade?

  • now for combat reasons which knife type is the best nutnfancy?

  • @Medidurmom fool

  • @MeTheSniper dude heat treating has been around since the days of the samurai

  • @bagman234 Heat treating blades has been around a lot longer than the Samuai, lol.

  • Also watch the un-f'n-believable beating this knife sustains. This vid made my decision on getting one: .youtube.com/watch?v=Bl1Cuj7JKDs - if you don't bother reading the comments the guy broke tip off in a vise during a previous horrific beating.

  • I hate how nutnfancy always says to cut down on weight. Well if he didnt take to cold steel recon scout and trailmaster everywhere his camping loadout wouldnt be so heavy.

  • Your review is great. The best one ive seen on youtube yet. keep it up

  • for a combat/survival knife the blade on this knife is great, it's the handle that is poor. The hook on the end of the handle is a big NO NO. Grabing that knife in a hurry can foul the speed by griping it wrong in a tight situation. It has "fumble" written all over it. The best combat knives have an even handle. Nice knife other than that.

  • I can't seem to find this knife anywhere in your "knife clinic" videos. Where is it?

  • @Nervjiggy He uses it in "Survival Skills: Firemaking, Southeast US by Nutnfancy"

  • I'm in the market for one of these. Do you still recommend this over similarly priced survival blades?

Very informative reviews, you review things that interest me and tell it like it is.

  • 75.00 $ in Vancouver Canada and they sell out from time to time.

  • D2 isn't as "brittle" as you think. Check out blunt truth's video of him chopping through that log with his D2 RAT 7.

  • dude! love the reviews. i wanted a good fixed blade watched your vid, and got this knife. brought it with me to colorado and loved it. chops great thanks

  • are you sure the lhb by ka-bar is 1095, i thought it was 1085.

  • @tac94540 yes I just looked and it's 1085

  • The thing was made in Taiwan. How can you even pick it up.

  • "So many blades, so little desk space" lmao i love you

  • Very informative! Trying to decide between this one & the Trail Master. Decisions, decisions....

  • Love KA- Bar. Good review man.

  • k-bar?

    sounds like a snack ..

  • @4lban3r Yea? I dare you to go stuff that down your throat -_-

  • Hey nutn,i'm looking on impact guns right now, and i'm guessing the ka bar bowie item number that ka bar gave it is 1277 for the 9 inch bowie, right?

I really wanted to make sure i bought the 9 inch, not the 7 inch.

    Thanks

  • do they make kydex sheaths for this? how bout the short version?

  • @0122358 they make kydex sheaths for it, but you usually have to purchase separately

  • @Dane3737 how about the short version?

  • @0122358 I have not looked up if they do for the shorter version. I assume that they would though. Just do a quick google search and you will find out no problem.

  • woah 666 video

  • is your rtak-2 for sale

  • nothin i hate more than a no- good deal

  • at wally world ( wal mart ) the have a 8inch buck for only 22.99 and i got 2 for me and my dad and they work great.i cut through a 2 in rope in like min flat.

  • Actually, I advocate buying American because it will probably gain in collector value over the years as everything moves to China.

  • Whoa! Look at that wound on the thumb. Those Spyderco knives cut pretty good. Sorry, Nutn!

  • what knife do you think is the best between a cold steel recon scout and a ka bar large heavy bowie? and what brand do you trust the most between ka bar and cold steel?

  • Hi, I have seen these heavy bowies made out of 1085. Is that going to be as good as your 1095 knife. I'm skeptical about buying the 1085 version, should I be?? Thanks.

  • @antsrealm I don't know a whole lot about knife steel, but I'm under the impression that with carbon steel blades the last 2 digits (i.e. 85, 95) designate the fraction of a percent that is pure carbon in the steel. Take what I'm telling you with a grain of salt, but I think the lesser carbon content in 1085 will mean it still retains the excellent properties of carbon steel (hardness, edge retention) but is less likely to rust and is softer, thereby easier to sharpen and less likely to chip.

  • hey man nice review ! i'm new to your channel, but anyways did the ka - bar last?

  • I'm very sad my USMC Kabar just broke because my friends disobeyed my rules and bent the tang :(

  • @CutleryNovice

Ka-Bar USMC's are great knives, but if you bend the tang, it'll fuck up the knife. Why did you let them "play" with it?

  • @M4ST3RL1NKX88 I was just letting him baton with it but he acted like a dumbass

  • @CutleryNovice A friend who breaks your knife is not worth having as a friend.

  • @Supermassively He's just not a knife guy so really when it comes to knives he's an idiot

  • @CutleryNovice

How did your friend bend the tang of a USMC KA-BAR?

  • @airsoftguy85rocks He hit the handle when batoning,

  • @airsoftguy85rocks then he probably bent the hand guard not the full tang right.

  • @CutleryNovice then he probably bent the hand guard not the full tang right.i replied to the wrong guy at first lol

  • @chrisw40 No he bent the whole tang down
