Did anyone hear about the new Sly Stone documentary ON THE SLY: In Search of the Family Stone? There is a preview I saw on youtube. Any news with this?
I remember seeing this band when I was in my early 20's in Canada when they were on tour. Because it was so hot in the venue...they walked off stage after only 3 songs!!!!! SUCKED!!
Poor Sly is homeless , broke, in LA and they try to get him some help, they interviewed him
few months ago, addicted to everything! The new Showtime series, House of lies uses this song as Theme, so , hpoefully, Sly gets some money and gets off the streets and addiction!
@mkaramian stop spreadng lies with your outdated infomation. I am friends with Freddy on FB and none of what you said is true. Bootsy Collins told me a new tour is being planned.
this the foschizzle, bdizzle dazzliest song of all time. (yes I m making up words as I go along, but words that exist already don't really do this song any justice) Good night people.
Saw them at a center in Miami, Florida, with friends. It took over two hours before these dudes came on the stage for I think they were a little high. I was about ready to leave and try to get my money back. They finally came on the stage, and what a show for I forgot how mad I was. It must have been 1969 or 1970.
Iris who wants to thank all of you for letting me be myself again and again and . . . . Great Post!!
Alright-alright, I get it already...the bass was tha' place! But Sly's brilliance put this all together. And let's not forget tha words to this here track. I know that when this cut dropped, it was thought that because Sly could play everythang...that it was Sly Stewart who actually played the studio version's bass line?! Still ....you ain't heard it from me...."I'm just sayin' ???
I want to thank him for getting me through junior high school! He was the music that kept me going! Thank you for being yourself, Sly. ! I hope you pick yourself up and get back at it. If the Mick Jagger can do it, so can you! You've got plenty of fans...we still love you!
Sly is doing fine, he is trying to make back his money, of which a huge slice was taken by greedy agents and bad investments. Not only "drugs and such" as I viewed below. No, the story of the 70s will most def not be complete without Sly, or the Family Stone! I also saw them play this live, in Atlantic City.
"Oh yea," so says one of the voices in this great song by Sly and The Family Stone. Wonder whether the story of the '70s will be complete without a generous reference to "Thank You." Many thanks to Sly and his team. A recent report ( October 2011) about him, somewhere in the United States, wasn't quite readable, though. NDUKA UZUAKPUNDU.
A #1 hit for Sly and The Family Stone on the Rhythm & Blues charts. It was the 205th #1 R&B song of the Rock Era. It also hit #1 on the Top 40 charts.
@eritreangurrl Yes, sampled, thank you for the correction, sincerely. I did not mean to give the impression that I disliked Rhythm Nation, quite the contrary, I love that song, grew up with it.
"Looking at the devil..." ~~~~~~Things that make you go hmmm....~~~~~ I just read that Sly Stone (Sylvester Stewart) started out singing CHRISTIAN music with his brother Freddie and his two sisters Rose and Vaetta. They were known as The Stewart Four. They recorded a single called On The Battlefield b/w Walking In Jesus' Name. 17 years later, they come out with a single called I Want To Thank You where they appear to be thanking Satan.
@ PearlGirl1943 YES ! WHEN BANDS - "MUSICIANS" ACTUALLY PLAYED THEIR OWN INSTRUMENTS -instead of "Sampling" and making up Excuses For ShopLifting (Stealing) the work of Other Actual Musicians. What's the matter Hip-Hoppers & Rappers - Too Lazy To Actually Learn How To Play Instruments Yourself ? and demanding to be called Great Musicians AND a place in the ROCK Hall of Fame to add to your rudeness and thefts ? P.S. A black-created style does Not Make it ROCK. Fundraise a Rap H.O.F.
@MarischaLInto809 Don't be so ignorant. Rapping is simply an extended form of poetry, and hip hop is merely the means of expressing it. Also, the majority of rappers get permission from the actual artists before they "shoplift" their music. Maybe before you open your mouth to talk, you should listen to some hip hop first.
@MarischaLInto809 A black created style is the basis of all of our music. Blues? Blacks started that. Bluegrass? Blacks started that. Rock? Blacks started that. Look into music history, practically every style over the past 150 years was started by blacks.
I just learned how to play this song on bass. I am starting to get into this style of playing the funky slapping and popping. I really like the groove of this. :)
Sly's greatest recording. To me, a landmark recording that progressed the funk originated by James Brown. Hugely influential for artists like Stevie Wonder, the Ohio Players, etc.
I'm not the person to get up and dance, but when I hear this song my body starts twitching and I just have to get up and dance like I can't control it!
@humannaturedj - Jimmy Jam and Terri Lewis were the super producers behind Janet's decade long ride @ the top of the charts. They sampled this song for her Rhythm Nation' cut. They also sampled the Supremes 'Someday (We'll Be Together) on the smash cut 'If".

Gangarzo, my uncle played a slap bass style in the fifties on a stand up bass. He was a studio musician in and around Hollywood
jbowen43 2 months ago 4
@jbowen43 Funk slapping on an electric bass is physically and stylistically different to upright slapping as used in rockabilly.
Funk slapping is a mix of thumping the root, popping the 3rd or 4th string typically, and hammerons/pulloffs...
More the case of playing bass as percussion..
alcockell 1 week ago
This is the first time a bass player "slapped" his bass, The style was created with this song by Larry Graham. FYI :)
