14 years old when I found this album. Completely blown away!!!! I'm 37 now. Still completely blown away!!!! If you were to try to define the word "JAM" this would be it Y'ALL.
Oh yeah "Willie Weeks" brought the bizness to this song, and pulled the audience with it. A phenomenal performance that night, actually on the whole show, he showed his talents.
I'm speaking reference to the original studio recording with more prominent vocals, but this is one of those songs that occupies one of those "special spaces" in music history...kinda like Gil Scott-Heron "Home Is Where the Hatred Is." Songs in which the artist tells the audience a LOT about themselves. This was a great song, but knowing that Donny Hathaway was paranoid schizophrenic puts this song in a WHOLE DIFFERENT LIGHT.
Thanks Mangy17! This is a classic and I can listen to it for the rest of the year with the same level of excitement. Is this on I Tunes ? Its got to be !!!!!
I BROUGHT THIS ALBUM HOME AND SAT FOR A YEAR TO TRY AND LEARN THE SOLO. I LEFT IT ALONE, REASON. THAT'S WILLIE. AND NOBODY ELSE CAN BE WILLE WEEKS BUT WILLIE WEEKS. MY CLAIM TO THIS BUSINESS IS THAT I AM ABLE TO WORK WELL WITH OTHERS. AND MY FOUNDATION AND APPROACH TO ANY TUNE THAT I PLAY I TAKE IT FROM AND USE IT FROM LARRY EXUM AND WILLIE WEEKS. I'VE FOUND MYSELF AS WELL. IT IS GOOD TO FIND YOURSELF. THANKS LARRY AND WILLIE.
I saw Willie Weeks perform in 1974 with Ron Wood's solo band in London, England. I didn't know who Weeks was at the time, but I was mightily impressed. Check out the instrumental tune "Crotch Music", written by Willie Weeks & showcasing his bass riffs. It's on Ron Wood's first solo album.
Willie Weeks made history with this bass solo. Still viewed as a reference amongst his peers. And what about the groove (although the sound is a bit outdated) Didn't hurt to have Cornell Dupree on the bandstand. The guy cut his teeth with King Curtis, so he knows a trick or two.
professional musicians showing how it's done. if you appreciate music broken down into its parts. this is it. every individual is a master of his tool. i will love this till they close the casket. trying to tell you now. it hurt me so much when donnie took his life. he was a music master. this is not a gift that god gives to everyone. he gave it to him but he was not ready or could not deal with the fame. it was the same, to me as phyilis hyman. she was extra ordinary. but this was my man.
What's not to like about the late Donny Hathaway? Extraordinary talent, gone much too soon. The combo he put together for this tour was world class, and the performances are off the charts.
