Nice playing, but chances are that 2008 Les Paul is chambered or weight relieved so it wouldn't be a true comparison of a genuine Les Paul with the SG.
Gibson ruined the Les Paul by chambering it and now none of them have the tone and sustain they used to have.
U bet at least 90 percent that like SG more are small guys that cannot hold a Les Paul for longer time. :P I like SGs but Les Paul IMO looks way more cool, and kinda gives off more punch.
@LeadGuitarist1999 The les paul has a much thicker, bassy, bluesy sound, and is much heavier, which means the notes last longer. The sg produces a really nice hard, trebly crunch which is really good for hard rock and some metal. Overall, both guitars are good for rock, but the les paul has a much fuller, thicker tone, while the sg has a much harder, crunchier tone.
Both are different. Look at jimmy page and look at angus young two very different guitarist and they use two different guitars. Les pauls are for blues and for classic rock. And the sg is for hard rock and heavy metal. nuff said.
Maybe the best guitar comparison (as far as editing, pacing, etc.) that I've seen. Anyway, for distortion, the SG sounds shimmier (fizzy)...the Les Paul meatier, more authentic.
At the time of the video I had only a poor cam, so the overdriven sounds aren't so good and probably this is the reason for the fizzy sound of the SG.
But I must agree with you, the LP is my favorite between the two guitars: les fizzy and more tight
@Frip36 I don't think it's fizzy, I would say there are more high range mids coming through which is what makes an SG sound like an SG. That would actually make the SG sound better mixed in with a live band, where the LP may not stand out as much and get a bit lost in the mix.
The SG is an LP, but thinner I think. Same pickups and wood, depending on what model you buy. The SG doesn't quite have that -PUNCH- that the LP delivers, and that's why I like to use one for rythm.
I'm gonna have to go with the sg. Better midrange, not quite so muddy. I play an sg standard and a lp studio, and the sg seems to cut through the mix better. I tend to use the sg for leads and the lp for rhythm...
The tonal differences are not that great, but the LP sounds fuller and better balanced to me. The SG sounds very midrangey and trebly, especially when the gain is turned up a bit. The LP, however, sounds very even.
Both really nice guitars. I like the SG though, mainly because of it's ability to get really hard and haevy on rhythms, and the sound/touch possibilties that are possible. Like late in your video.
Do you have any problems with the SG '61 de tuning very easly? I did on mine, so I replaced the Gibson Delux machine heads with locking ones but they have not made much difference. :)
@breightool Widen the nut and it'll fix it. I had the same issue with my '61, would go out of tune after playing for about a minute, seriously. Had the nut widened a bit and it stays in tune fine now.
@lgop2nopz Your problem with tuning maybe that you need to put graphite in the nut slots you can even just take a no.2 pencil and put the graphite from it in there its all the same but trust me it makes a huge difference in tuning stability and helps the string not slip out of tune
@lgop2nopz I think that's just a quirk with sgs because I've owned 2 and they both had that problem, but i always just thought it was my fault for bending so hard until i switched to a strat as my main axe lol
SG all the way, it sounds better when in overide its awesome for metal and rock and also it sounds not a lot different when its clean. AND IT HAS AND AWESOME STYLE, but if ur starting out i would get the Les Paul.
im choosing between SG Standard and SG '61 Reissue. I play Green Day, Led Zeppelin kind of music. Should I just go for a Les Paul. I like the feel on all three guitars
I have and 08 61 reissue SG and a 92 les paul standard (grover tuners). I play them straight into a Marshall DSL 401 amp. Both guitars have been professionally set up. As with everything there is give and take. Pluses for the SG- light weight compared to LP when gigging. Better high end tone and access to high frets. LP pluses- Awesome mids and low end tones. Thats what all that weight gives you. The LP plays alot easier for me. Play them side by side and you will see what I mean.
Nice playing man! These two guitars make quite the dilemma; les paul does have a much warmer, creamier sound, and the SG is kind of evil, more agressive...
There is no better guitar its just what you prefer and feels good to you they are both incredible guitars that have proven themselves through time so i would shred on either one.
Q1: never tried yet, sorry. But I think you can get a good Angus tone with the '61
Q2: the 60's neck is the same, but on the SG has better playability - expecially on higher frets - because of the two cutaways (but the LP std in the video has 50's fat neck).
be', sono due chitarre molto diverse: non credo una sia in assoluto migliore dell'altra. Fossi costretto a tenerne una sola non avrei dubbi, preferirei tenere la Les Paul.
The Les Paul is nice, but I think the SG wins in this. Those '57 Classics win over those BurstBuckers. Don't you think? Now, get a Les Paul Classic, which has the '57s and you'll be set!
I've been torn on which pickups to replace in my SG standard. I currently have the 490s. Your LP sounds so good yet I always thought the BBs were too hot. Now I'm not sure which I want to go with... Of course the guitar itself and amp have a lot to do with the sound as well...
both 57 classics and bb pro aren't too hot: they always let you control dynamic. but, as you can see on Gibson website, 57 Classics have a little more aoutput than BB pro. But I think Classics are the best choice for a SG because of their brigtness.
very cool. the biggest difference I hear is in the clean tones. Mids & Lows. The SG sounds more aggressive to me as the gain gets turned up. Both sound great, the les paul has a lot more thickness to it. I wonder what the differences would sound like if the guitars both had the same pickups? The 61 reissue has the 57 reissue PAF humbuckers, which sound MUCH better than the standard 490 & 498T humbuckers & the les paul has the burstbuckers, which are a hotter wound pickup. GREAT VID.
Sure, the SG is bright, has more attack and aggressive sound when overdriven, while the Les Paul is thick and more "full" on lows and mids.
Certainly the pick ups make some difference between the guitars. I love both 57 classics and BB pro: the former are hotter and brighter, the latter have more mids, but I think they don't denaturalize the main tonal features of the instruments, i.e. attack, sustain and frequency response.
The sg. The look, the sound, everything.
