Living in Western Washington, I've experienced a few of these windstorms. I wasn't here for the 1962 storm, but I experienced the December 2006 storm. The wind sounds like a jet plane engine roaring. You look out the window and see trees bending in the wind & trash cans from ten blocks away hurtling past your window.
I bet when the tree came down next to the house, an insurance agent felt that, wherever he was. ("What was THAT?!") Thanks for posting this film. Where did you find this BTW?
I remember it pretty well. Our neighbor's entire roof was in the middle of our street and the following day I rode my small bike around it. Some neighbors put stuff in our freezer so they wouldn't lose their meat supply. Some in our neighborhood in Portland had their windows blow in due to the force of the wind. We heard later of Volkswagon autos that took flight in that storm--like something out of the Wizard of Oz. Our home seemed to shudder with each gust of wind. Thanks for posting film.
Thanks for your comment. This is from a silent 8mm home movie; I considered adding stock sound effects but expect it would end up sounding fake anyway. I appreciate hearing from those with first-hand memories- thanks again.
No sound makes this storm seem a lot less scary than it really was...We were petrified. My dad drove us down to the Bakery in lebanon, OR because the building was made from Cement. It still as sturdy now as it was then. But it was much worse than it is portrayed here. Funny it is all apartment complexes now. I appreciate the movie but again you just do not get the feeling of what it was like at all. However Thanks for the share. i do recall how strange the sky looked, wind was warm too.
This film was made by a relative and has been kept in the family since 1962.
