Because, even though he was a great man, he was in the way of the Homunculous and wasn't nearly as strong as many of the other side characters. I think Hiromu Arakawa killed him in order to show that death doesn't discern between 'good' and 'evil.' She did it to show that even the greatest of living beings can be a matter of circumstance when they die, hence why Nina, Buccaneer and many others died within the series.

People come and go, thing in this world are hard when we lose something that we dearly loved, Anime is the exact same, we cry for those who die, everyone has human inside of them, we love each other, and we fight each other, we cry when someone dies, we cheer when we win a fight against our fellow human beings, Emotions are something that are always going to be the most largest mystery to mankind, will it ever be solved, I can't say for sure, but I can say this I know where my emotions stand.

@4Redtail Mmmm.. As much as I love answering deep questions like this... I'm afraid i'm not exactly good at answering questions about my emotions. And from what i gather, the only answer i could think of would be that if I was needed, i'd act regardless of how i would be feeling in order to do what's necessary. If that wasn't what you were asking, then perhaps i just don't understand.

@lSzeSze Well, here is a simpler way to answer the question, if you had to break the law to do something, that would save someone you loved, would you do it, the penalty, depending on the crime, is either jail, expelled from your country, or death, would you break the law to save the person you loved, so they could live on for you? You would have to make a choice at a time like this, and only you can make that choice, because you would know where your emotions would stand. Love or power?

As long as they are able to save someone they love, I think that even if the penalty was death, they'd atleast die happy knowing that in the end they were able to prolong their loved one's life. So i guess if i can think that way, i'd probably do it too.
