@TheGravitationist I'd like that too. But I'd like to see some of their overseas operations. The violence that drug/sex traffickers commit in the likes of Russia, Ukraine and the Balkans would make the worst of what happens in the States look like a bad day in a kindergarten
My girlfriend watches Glee and Grey's Anatomy and she says MY shows suck! This show would blow her universe if she'd just sit down and watch it with me.
the greek is from minor asia turkey imigrated to usa after the war as most of the usa greek people(im talking only about the old man the greek)thats why he is not greek he came as turkish citizen!!!!
A hot (piece of) iron in my heart I have It’s your love that tortures me In my entire life I will have A burden on my conscience (because of) the many mistakes of mine That turned you away from me She left, she left, she left, I lost her And I wander, and I ask And the streets I've taken (wander) I wake up from my sleep and I ask for you Now I understood how much I love you...... (repeat verse 1)
This is a minor complaint about an otherwise perfect show, but do you really think a mole is going to be dumb enough to use the FBI landline phone to call a known gangster? I find that hard to believe.
@krishnm I thought about it too, but it seems, that the guy was so high in FBI hierarchy, that he would know if someone was watching him, and being in counter-terrorism after 9/11 propably gave him more clearances, connections etc. that he knew, he was safe
@krishnm You really think Koutris was a mole? The relationship between Koutris and The Greek was portrayed as a common business practice. The Greek gave intel to Koutris on supposed "terrorists" and Koutris tipped The Greek off when there was some heat coming his way. Look at Fitzhugh's reaction when he learns about the leak, he's more angry at himself than Koutris. The FBI's agenda has changed, they're willing to let a drug dealer off if they can get information on terrorists.
@krishnm It's almost stated outright and hinted at. Hinted at as you saw, Koutris worked Counter-Terrorism and all that, which was/is the Bureau's main focus now, and if you think about it: Are they gonna tap their own people? And Koutris already made the very large drug bust, tit for tat with The Greek, in the role of "stopping terrorism". Let a small fish go (and if you don't care about a few murders here 'n there and drugs then it is) to catch a big one (the terrorists whoarefinancedbydrugs)
I love the line "your way. It wont work" Like the Greek knew Spiros was wrong in the first place. I also loved the way The Greek picked up on Spiros' "weaknesses" when remarking how he thought Spiros had developed a father son relationship with Nick
once again the Greek was not Greek. Vodas is Greek. The Greek is Armenian. He mention to the Sailor about being Turskish "this not the old days" talking about the Ottoman Empire who cast genocide over Armenian people. The Ottoman empire is now call Turkey.
Regarding the Greek's comment "I'm not even Greek", it doesn't sound like he meant it literally. He was responding to Spiros' comment that his name isn't even his name, because he has many passports and when using one of them, he becomes the name on the passport, leaving anyone pursuing a previous name cold. The Greek then implies that he can do the same thing, that when assuming a false identity, he can redefine his racial/cultural heritage. Whether he was actually Greek is still debatable.
Im Greek but i cant help but be curious as to why they chose a GREEK "mafia" as a pose to the traditional Italian or Russian for example... Is this a true story? Is there such an organization in Baltimore that is Greek?? Please help lol im fascinated! :)
There is a small Greek district in Baltimore, a lot of Greek immigrants moved there, though I don't think there is quite a 'mafia' like the 5 families in New York, but of course there are crime families in all ethnicities and Greeks are no exception. The Italian/Sicilian families operate in New York and New Jersey and rarely in the drugs business, so there is a niche there for other crime gangs.
@ quelorepario porque no te andes a la concha de tu madre? Sos un hijo de mil putas. actually maybe he was cypriot, that would explain why people thought he was greek, and why could speak greek, etc. Also his animosity towards turkish people
motherfukers if the greek wasn't greek then why the fuck did he speak greek throughout the series, why did he use a greek diner as his headquaters, why did he eat greek food at a greek restaurant, why did he have a komboloi and why did he drink ouzo? @sakisg088 he might have been albanian, albanians are known for their organised crime in regards to international contraband and shipping, mostly of women
@sakisg088 hey noob, it is called a cover. Right now you can hear me writing perfect English. You would be surprised hearing me speaking Argentine Spanish fluently, but you would never ever imagine that I am actually a Korean.
@McArra1985 are you kidding me most the bad guys on the wire are Americans. Of course some of the bad guys are foreigners but what do you expect when it comes to drugs. America doesn't produce Heroin or Coke its shipped here by foreigners working with Americans which is how its portrayed on The Wire. By the way your English does suck.
@Tophawk36 No way dude.....Out of all the kingpins they feature who is evades the law and is never captured? The Greeks! They are the bosses of Baltimore because no one knows who they are.

@athanas100 thank you so much, that was very nice!! I love that song i listen to it every day on my way to work, sometimes i wish my drive is little longer so i can to it 100 time :)
Turks and Greeks hating eachother should slap themselves really hard. If that doesnt help then jump off a bridge or something.
We have sveral millions with ancestors either in Greece or Turkey, speaking the both languages (Stelios Kazatzidis sings in turkish too). Our culture, music and the people are thevery same with different names and language. Stop acting like idiots over an dot on some fucking map...
We never met such a... genius like the greek anymore.
Compared to the greek, string and marlo are stupid project fools.
He had such an impact everytime he was in the picture. I would consider The Greek as one of the most intelligent characters ever. These 3 Men are perfectly organized, no federal can fuck with them....
I'd put The Greek in one line with Prof. Moriarty,
@baucaralho yes indeed! you could not like them even if you wanted to!!! :P great series, but just like any other series with supposed greek characters, their pronunciation sucked! they wouldn't pass for greeks in a million years! ...there is ONE glorious exception to that, though, with the guy that played Talbot in True Blood, and that's because he was Greek (or Cypriot maybe)!
@MiniBaller4774 yes,ok! you're right!they said that, but I was just commenting on the portarayal of greeks in foreign films and series in general! it was just an opinion! ...and if you hate your life for whatever reason, it doesn't mean you should write so mean comments! try being polite every once in a while! oh! ...and Merry Christmas, btw!!! :)
@dazza5266 Yeah man the Greek was the fucking boss in the Wire as far as I am concerned. I hate when people say that Season 2 sucked. That season shows who was is really behind major crime in the cities and how drugs and guns get in.
"the greek" isn't albanian or russian - he's armenian, just listen to the exchange between him and the sailor ( who was turkish ) they killed over the dead prostitutes - he makes subtle references to the centuries-old beef between turks and armenians - "turkish, huh? you got that little hook on your nose. don't worry, patrioti. i got nothing against the turks. that was the old world, this is the new." amazing and enigmatic, none the less.
He def isn't Albanian. I think "The Greek" was a Pontian Greek (or something involving Pontian Greek). Pontians are from Black Sea region - Turkey, Ukraine, Bulgaria etc - which could explain accent, him drinking vodka and using koboloi (greek)
Also the reference to a beef with Turks - there is a very real centuries-old beef b/w Greeks and Turks, particularly for Pontians - the Pontian Genocide and forcible mass transfer of Ottoman Greeks.
Plus the song might be a clue - Kazantzidis is Pontian
@SofiaY84 he is not pontian greek from soviet union.First ofall a pontian greek will never say that he is not greek.Secont of all George Pelecanos who write this part don't know the pontians from the ex-soviet union.
Sure, their governments are opposed on the issue of Cyprus, and thus so are some of the moronic nationalists. But I'm sure the more educated and intelligent Greeks and Turks don't have any animosity at all towards each other.
I doubt that either Spiros or The Greek particularly give a shit about Greek or Turkish foreign policy, so even if The Greek is actually Turkish, the rightful sovereignty of Cyprus probably isn't an issue between them ;)
thank you so much for helping me find this song!!!! recently bought the full series of the wire and im on 3rd season (second time going through it) show is even more fucking amazing the second time around
also thought season 2 was underrated. Some great characters in it-Ziggy, Horseface, Spiros, Frank. Valchek vs Frank was hilarious. This is a great song and fitted the scene brillantly.
Season 2 was soooo underrated. I think because it wasn't so hood focused. I loved it and I'm a young black guy...and I love the song...absolutely love it.

We have sveral millions with ancestors either in Greece or Turkey, speaking the both languages (Stelios Kazatzidis sings in turkish too). Our culture, music and the people are thevery same with different names and language. Stop acting like idiots over an dot on some fucking map...

this have to be one of the greatest scenes ever in the wire, and the music really does it

The Greek wasn't even Greek. He says it himself in Episode 11 or 12, when he and Spiros were laughing about it in the hotel.
Good luck figuring out what he really is though, I definitely can't make it out from his accent or anything.
You0know0who0Iam0Seb 1 year ago
I still think the 2nd season was the best.
Moriarty,

panzio21000 1 year ago
@baucaralho yes indeed! you could not like them even if you wanted to!!! :P great series, but just like any other series with supposed greek characters, their pronunciation sucked! they wouldn't pass for greeks in a million years! ...there is ONE glorious exception to that, though, with the guy that played Talbot in True Blood, and that's because he was Greek (or Cypriot maybe)!
FaniKatsiki 1 year ago
@FaniKatsiki They aren't even Greek you fucking idiot. Did you watch the show at all or are you just that stupid?
MiniBaller4774 1 year ago
@MiniBaller4774 yes,ok! you're right!they said that, but I was just commenting on the portarayal of greeks in foreign films and series in general! it was just an opinion! ...and if you hate your life for whatever reason, it doesn't mean you should write so mean comments! try being polite every once in a while! oh! ...and Merry Christmas, btw!!! :)

Pontians are widely considered to be the BEST Greeks.
:-)

The Greek is most likely a Pontic Greek. He has that accent and he refers to a long-running feud with the Turks.

@dazza5266 Yeah man the Greek was the fucking boss in the Wire as far as I am concerned. I hate when people say that Season 2 sucked. That season shows who was is really behind major crime in the cities and how drugs and guns get in.
ak47523 1 year ago 7
I liked all the crime organizations in the Wire expect the Stanfield Organization. Vondas was the best in Season 2.

"the greek" isn't albanian or russian - he's armenian, just listen to the exchange between him and the sailor ( who was turkish ) they killed over the dead prostitutes - he makes subtle references to the centuries-old beef between turks and armenians - "turkish, huh? you got that little hook on your nose. don't worry, patrioti. i got nothing against the turks. that was the old world, this is the new." amazing and enigmatic, none the less.
hmwatisthis1 2 years ago 4
He def isn't Albanian. I think "The Greek" was a Pontian Greek (or something involving Pontian Greek). Pontians are from Black Sea region - Turkey, Ukraine, Bulgaria etc - which could explain accent, him drinking vodka and using koboloi (greek)
Also the reference to a beef with Turks - there is a very real centuries-old beef b/w Greeks and Turks, particularly for Pontians - the Pontian Genocide and forcible mass transfer of Ottoman Greeks.
Plus the song might be a clue - Kazantzidis is Pontian
SofiaY84 2 years ago 5
@SofiaY84 he is not pontian greek from soviet union.First ofall a pontian greek will never say that he is not greek.Secont of all George Pelecanos who write this part don't know the pontians from the ex-soviet union.
Giorikas86 1 year ago
Yeah, but you know who else dislikes the Turks: The Greeks, thanks to a feud over a little island state called Cyprus.
brwhizz 2 years ago
@brwhizz
Sure, their governments are opposed on the issue of Cyprus, and thus so are some of the moronic nationalists. But I'm sure the more educated and intelligent Greeks and Turks don't have any animosity at all towards each other.
I doubt that either Spiros or The Greek particularly give a shit about Greek or Turkish foreign policy, so even if The Greek is actually Turkish, the rightful sovereignty of Cyprus probably isn't an issue between them ;)

also thought season 2 was underrated. Some great characters in it-Ziggy, Horseface, Spiros, Frank. Valchek vs Frank was hilarious. This is a great song and fitted the scene brillantly.
