Hello! Great bike, awesome sound!! I got my FXDC one month ago and look forward to replace the original pipes by V&H like yours. Because I live in Brasil, I will probably import it from USA (even with import taxes, i bet it is cheapper than buying from a local reseller). So, could you please let me know the Part Numbers of the pipes and baffles? Thanks! Alex
@ReaperScope13 My FXDC follows the classic Harley-Davidson form. As such, it's pretty darned comfortable. However, the Night Rod, being a V-ROD with a liquid cooled, high-tech twin is going to be MUCH, MUCH faster than an FXDC or any air-cooled big-twin H-D for that matter.
Oh hell, I reread your post and saw where you said that you had already installed your footboards. I didn't pay attention in school either. But anyway, do you like the comfort factor since the changeover from the mids? Do they allow you to stretch your legs a little more? Ok, enough questions...for now. I would however love to see a couple of pictures of your bike with the footboards, if you get a few minutes. Let me know if I'm becoming a pain-in-the-ass. My wife would definitely concur.
@john121154 Questions no problem! I find the footboards quite comfortable. They do allow you to change your foot position, but I'll still be adding highway pegs for those long freeway rides. I posted a link to my website that has quite a few pics of my bike. Click on "Show More" in the description area just below the video window to see the link..
Thank you for the in-depth advice. It'll be invaluable when I finally get my lazy ass around to doing the job. I lucked out by asking someone who's done it a few times. I'll bet the footboards will look great on your bike. I'd really like to see some pictures when you get them on. I'll bet they'll definitely be more comfortable by allowing you to move your feet around a little. Anyway, thanks again and watch out for the occasional idiot drivers. Take care.
Did you put the pipes on yourself? If so, was it difficult removing the stock mufflers? Sorry about all the questions, but if you have any helpful tips, they would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Good video by the way. Thanks for doin' it.
@john121154 Yes. 3rd set I've done. Not too hard to remove old mufflers. Loosen clamps, spray WD-40 into the joint at slots, rock them side to side / up and down as you pull back. They WILL come off. The instructions say to install the slip-ons with the heat shields on, but leave them off. Get the pipes on straight and tight before installing the heat shields. If the front head pipe looks out of line up/dn w/muffler, your head pipe heat shield slipped down. Loosen clamps and adjust up at front.
@SmokyPondFarm In addition, depending on how much they were stretched at the factory, you may or may not need new muffler clamps. If they're not bottomed out in the center where the bolt goes through the 'T', they may be OK, otherwise, pick up some new ones at the dealer. Be sure to torque the clamp nuts to 38-43 ft./lbs., then torque again when hot. Also, remember to note the orientation of the muffler support (bar bolted to mufflers) as you remove it. It's a bear to figure out after the fact!
@SmokyPondFarm Thanks for the info. I had no problem getting the stock mufflers off once I used the WD40. I thought I was doing something wrong before reading your post.
@SmokyPondFarm Nothin'...I was just messin' around. You were saying something and I couldn't hear you because your bike was running. That's a gorgeous bike, and that's the sound I'm looking for with the quiet baffles. Perfect. By the way, how tall are you? I'm 6'1 with a 34" inseam and was wondering if the stock foot controls are comfortable for you on extended rides. I haven't gotten my bike yet, but my leg position didn't feel too bad in the showroom. Thanks, and take care.
@john121154 I'm 5'10-1/2" w/32" inseam, and although I've since changed my mid-controls out for footboards, I found the mid-controls extremely comfortable, even when riding for several hours at a stretch. The footboards added to the look I was after, plus it forced me to stop riding it like it was a metric sport-bike!
Thanks so much for the info. I believe I will try myself. I have the identical bike just 2011. I hope everything is the same and I can have that sound. Great bike.
@hunt6060 I didn't like the sound of the StraightShot slip-ons with the stock baffles, plus I had decel pop with them, which tells me there was the possibility of running lean. I purchased and installed the -2 to 3 dB "quiet" baffles. Much better sound IMO (and not much quieter), and no decel pop. I think the additional sound deadening imparts more back pressure. Never had to remap. Nothing, including condition of plugs ever indicated a lean condition. I ran the stock air cleaner.
your bike sounds perfect, is it just the straight shot slip ons on s stocked bike. i cant believe it sounds so good. i have a 2011 fxdc if i can get that sound by just ss slip ons i will be excited.....please let me know, thanks fo rthe posting
@multinuckinfuts It's a completely stock 2010 FXDC. All I did was add the V&H Straight Shot slip-ons WITH the V&H "quiet" baffles. The "quiet" baffles really don't make it quieter. They actually increase the low frequency rumble sound and remove most of the undesirable high frequency "crack" that is evident with the standard baffles included with the slip-ons.
