The US government does not issue currency. Federal Reserve Corporation does. The only thing the US govt does is sell bonds which Federal Reserve Corporation buys and then sells back to the US govt at a higher price. This is why it is mathematically impossible for the US govt to get out of debt since it can't get more Federal Reserve Notes without going deeper into debt.

A good example of the bridge builder's paradox. In addition to the cars, the bridge must be designed to support its own weight. How can you know how much it weighs if you haven't designed it yet? The crane must support 1/2 a ship + its own weight.
