What a great memorable clip from Lucy's final show, or was the one with Mr. Mooney in the bank her final Show? Which one came first? I started watching I Love Lucy back in 1959 or 1960 with my Parents and brothers. Lucy and Ginger had to be 60 or older when this Show aired. How flexible they both stayed. And daughter, Lucy, had so much of her Mom's and Dad, Desi's talent. We watched the Honeymooners with Gleason as a Family also.
AMAZING *Notice (even though they're all brilliant of course) Ginger Rogers is the only one wearing High Heels Kim nad Lucy are wearing Dancing Shoes. Just Proves how talented she was XD
In this segment all the audience reaction was dubbed in. I know a lot of Lucy diehards will dispute this, but episodes of all the Lucy shows going back to the late 50s were sometimes filmed without an audience.
@TVonthePorch No, virtually all of Lucy's shows (even that last stinker) were filmed in front of a live audience. My late uncle, who was a cameraman for Desilu and later Paramount, knew this to be fact. What he also knew was that often, the audience reactions were "sweetened" as they used to say, with pre-recorded laughter. This was and still is common practice because sometimes, the applause or reactions don't record well, or the reaction just isn't up to par.

We should have heard more from Lucy Jr. She held her own with these pros! An interesting person in her own right. Just as energetic as her mother. 3-20-2011
When you are great, you are great and Miss Rogers was fantastic. She never lost her luminosity, charm, charisma and talent. Miss Ball & Miss Rogers are fantastic in this clip. Thank you for sharing.
The Southern Oregon Historical Society is hosting a centennial Ginger Rogers Fashion Show on Sunday, May 1 in Medford, OR! Twenty-two gowns owned by Ginger will be shown! Roberta Olden, Ms. Rogers’s former secretary, will give a presentation; there will be a dance demonstration; a silent auction (with available bidding on e-bay); and live music.
Seating is limited. For info call Allison Weiss at 541-494-0273
Ms Ball admitted that Irene Dunne, Kate Hepburn and Ms Rogers were bigger stars at RKO than she but it was Lucille Ball who ended up with Desi Arnaz buying RKO and naming it Desilu. Lucy said of any actress in Hollywood of her era she was the one least likely to buy a studio. I doubt that. Ms. Ball had a fearless way about Her and without Lucy bulling the shows past her Board, there would be no Star Trek or Mission Impossible.
Is it just me or does Lucy have nice legs? I even think she's showing them off a bit!
Yeah, I agree with Duke that society is the worse for the obligatory scowl, the insistence that humor be sick or nasty, that everything must be "dark and edgy." It all began when musicians stopped smiling on album covers, around 1966. The counter culture made niceness unrespectable.
This had me smiling all the way through, and when Ginger mentioned Katharine Hepburn at the end, that completely did me in. I smiled so hard that i could have exploded. if only that made sense.
@AudiGal09 Ginger and Kate had some kind of "feud" that was well publicised during the filming of "Stage Door". The press made it out to be more than it really was, but I suppose for this episode, for Lucy to become a Katharine Hepburn fan would have been a way for Ginger to get back at Kate. It was kind of an inside joke. I think by this time, all the ladies had become friends.
Im so lucky to have this DVD collection at home!!!!!! I just finished watching this and was researching all of the people I didn't know that made cameos on her show Jack Benny is also one of my favs!
Ginger was a stunner in her younger years and just as stunning here. She had a bubbly personality, she just shines here, what a wonderful person she must have been.
@Fiftiesflashback True, but I wouldn't have missed those beautiful legs for anything! By the way, I saw a recent interview with Lucie and she's still absolutely beautiful. Whatever she's doing, it's working!
@vivalaskeek Not Lucy, (the mom, spelled with a "y") Lucie (the daughter, spelled with an "ie") did a recent interview. She's about 60 now, but she looks and sounds wonderful. Yes, I know, Lucy died in 1989. I remember it when it happened and it felt like losing a family member.
@weightfeather1 Thanks for clarifying. I'm not much of a Lucy historian. In fact, anything she did after I Love Lucy was hard for me to watch because of all the damage smoking did to her voice. Not only that, but she just looked so tired...
@vivalaskeek Remember, by then, she was a lot older. She had fair freckled skin that didn't age well and because she formed keloid scars, she couldn't resort to plastic surgery like so many other celebrities did. Yeah, her voice sounded pretty "smoked-out" by the end of her career.
Lucy actually made many cameo appearances in a lot of the Astaire and Rogers movies. Ginger's mother Lela Rogers, was very much a part of her daughters career. So much so the studio (RKO) gave her a job working with new talent. Lucy was one of those girls.
@Duke535 Maybe the mainstream media wants everyone depressed for control and brainwashing purposes, that's why youtubers are all upbeat and sensible people;)
I love how lucy just rips off her robe and there she is in all her glory haha...ginger rogers is such a good dancer, her feet look like they glide right on the ground...true talent!
I wish I could do the charleston like Ginger. Tryna learn from the Queen of dance Miss Rogers, I must say, the charleston ain't easy lol! But it sure is a hell of a lot of fun! I've been dancing it all day lol! :)
I heard there's somewhere near Hollywood you can see a show with retired show biz people from the fifties and they do numbers like this. Anyone know what that show is called? I would love to see it!
@Titike86 The song is "The Charleston", written by Cecil mack and James P. Johnson in 1923. Go onto Google and look up the particulars. The dance with the same name was extremely popular in the 20s.
Godd those two - what AMAZING PEOPLE !! Been in love with Lucy for years due to her comedy and Ginger for her simply flawless talent. Age is no matter with her and I wouldn't feel right saying ''even at her age'' because it doesn't matter how old she is and age shouldn't hold any body back.
A proof of the talent of an artist. Ginger Rogers was in her sixties here, she was not the Thirties beauty anymore but she is still one of the most graceful performers. Look her charming expression when she starts to dance and how she moves! Pure magic of a real artist!
They all look like they were having a really fun time and they seem so joyful at the end that it came off so well! How on Earth did Ginger get her hips to turn like that?! I guess a real trouper never loses her dancin' legs! Beautiful, all of 'em!
The Official Second Season of The Lucy Show, Lucy's Second series, is being released on DVD on July 13, 2010! It's now available for pre-order on amazon! And it's in Color, and co-stars Vivian Vance!
I agree, she was. What's so amazing is that at the time, she was about 21, but the other ladies were 60! For what it's worth, Lucie Arnaz is now just about the age these ladies were then, and Lucie Arnaz still looks fantastic!
I've never thought that Lucy and Lucie looked too much alike, but you can certainly recognize the same long beautiful legs! Also, do remember that Lucy and Ginger were close to 60 when this was filmed! Amazing ladies, all of them!
I probably saw this episode when I was a kid (15 at the time), but didn't realize how good it was. Like so many others have said, they don't make shows like this anymore. Bravo to both of these classy ladies for doing The Charleston at age 60, and making it look so effortless.
@Bradat26 Sure enjoyed your comment about this video! These ladies were seasoned Pros, but kept right up with "little" Lucie - age has no boundaries!!
@ameroux Lucy and Ginger were old pals from the MGM days. Lucy once related to stardom as a delicacy "from which she dare not take a bite" ...she saw herself as a day-player, hoofer or character actress early-on. How tender the old times are by comparison to today.
@Andremedia: "How tender the old times are ..." So true! Lucy and Ginger were also in Stage Door together when they were very young, so they would have known each other a very long time. I enjoyed this clip so much.
@ameroux@Andremedia Lucy and Ginger are distant cousins and they always kept a very close friendship. They made alot of appearances together. Ginger was also distant cousins with Bette Davis.
My father and step-mother were aquainted with Ginger through the Christian Science Church in southern California. I believe my step-mom referred to her as a "super-sweetheart".
Ginger kept her looks and kept working. She did films, she did Broadway, she did T.V. She was one tough dame with one tough mother. She also was a genius. Fred and Ginger remained lifetime friends. Lucie always impressed me on these shows. She should have won a Tony for "Promises, Promises" and didn't even get a nomination.
Ginger wasn't in Promises, Promises, not even as a replacement. She was a replacement in Hello, Dolly (1966), the original cast of Girl Crazy (1930, she played the part that Judy Garland played in the film) and a couple of others, but nothing after Dolly. Replacements don't receive Tony nods, only original cast.
ya so true only woman's voice tht did the opposite was audrey hepburn her voice seemed to remain the same maybe jst a bit lighter but tht could have been because of age
Although it's been acknowledged that Kate was on a "higher plane" than the others, Kate, Lucy and Ginger were friendly through the remainder of their lives. When Lucie married Larry Luckinbill, they named one of their daughters "Katharine" for Kate.
it's amazing how the careers of these two entwined through the years - lucy was a bit player at RKO during the fred and ginger days (she had a small bit in "follow the fleet"). lucy's breakout role was in stage door with ginger rogers... and katherine hepburn. pretty awesome to see them together some 40 years later.
This is SO cool to see them in scenes like that. The notes say it's from 1971. I grew up watching Lucy on this show when I was a kid. They made it look so easy.
this is soooo cute!! i love ginger, i just finished watching my favorite dance of her and fred, never gonna dance, check it out if youve never seen it, its from the movie swing time :)
She was a Republican! :)

@ameroux @Andremedia Lucy and Ginger are distant cousins and they always kept a very close friendship. They made alot of appearances together. Ginger was also distant cousins with Bette Davis.

My father and step-mother were aquainted with Ginger through the Christian Science Church in southern California. I believe my step-mom referred to her as a "super-sweetheart".

Um, it's Charleston, as in the South Carolina city -- spelled with an E.

It's amazing even at her age and next to a hot young thing you just can't take your eyes off Ginger Rogers when she is dancing.

I don't think Lucy or Ginger were big K.H. fans after Stage Door. You gotta love em all though. Amazing women.

The real fun starts when Lucy whips off her skirt !

Ginger kept her looks and kept working. She did films, she did Broadway, she did T.V. She was one tough dame with one tough mother. She also was a genius. Fred and Ginger remained lifetime friends. Lucie always impressed me on these shows. She should have won a Tony for "Promises, Promises" and didn't even get a nomination.
waynebrasler 2 years ago 2
Ginger wasn't in Promises, Promises, not even as a replacement. She was a replacement in Hello, Dolly (1966), the original cast of Girl Crazy (1930, she played the part that Judy Garland played in the film) and a couple of others, but nothing after Dolly. Replacements don't receive Tony nods, only original cast.

@KokoPuffs52 The reference was not to Ginger, but to Lucie.

Its funny how Lucille's voice became so husky
purclassic1 2 years ago
Not so funny really, she was a hefty smoker!

Age and heavy smoking always do it to most women smokers eventually.
Barndancer61 2 years ago
ya so true only woman's voice tht did the opposite was audrey hepburn her voice seemed to remain the same maybe jst a bit lighter but tht could have been because of age
SwanofHollywood 2 years ago
Ginger didn't smoke

The Katherine Hepburn line was an inside joke.
Kate was not very nice to Ginger when they were at the same studio.
TheMsdiva777 2 years ago 3
I think too - that Lucy thought Kate Hepburn bit of a prima dona.
newrochellephoenix 2 years ago 2
Although it's been acknowledged that Kate was on a "higher plane" than the others, Kate, Lucy and Ginger were friendly through the remainder of their lives. When Lucie married Larry Luckinbill, they named one of their daughters "Katharine" for Kate.
weightfeather1 1 year ago
ahah "please become a katharine hepburn fan" LOL!
how could they be that stunning ??
classilyette 2 years ago 2
it's amazing how the careers of these two entwined through the years - lucy was a bit player at RKO during the fred and ginger days (she had a small bit in "follow the fleet"). lucy's breakout role was in stage door with ginger rogers... and katherine hepburn. pretty awesome to see them together some 40 years later.
saltybroad 2 years ago
This is SO cool to see them in scenes like that. The notes say it's from 1971. I grew up watching Lucy on this show when I was a kid. They made it look so easy.

lol how old was Ginger when she did this? she still looked flawless dancing.

Both Ginger and Lucy were 60 years old when they did this.

Their birthdays are about three weeks apart, both born in 1911. Gingers is in mid-July and Lucy's is early August.
