The best RPG game I've played even better then final fantasy! Todays Rpg games sucks guns stupid sound turn based movement. in this game you feel free can do every move with easy spell menu not to complex its easy. The sound is superior no doubt even today!!
Had no idea that Jeremy Soule composed the music for this game, or that he had worked for Square. Interesting to hear his early work. Especially like the tune @ 1:37
6:20 <33333 BTW U missed one, right after 6:20 in that same area, if u go deeper into that level there is a really really nice background music shame u missed it.
It really doesn't matter to me how old I get this game is one of the best games I have ever played and the music is just amazing. I can't believe I still get shivers listen to the music.
I played this game before playing Secret of Mana, and although it was really tough at first, it got better and I enjoyed it a lot. I'm playing SOM now, but it just doesn't seem as fun to me. The bosses spam spells, making them feel unfair, the characters seem boring, and the AI is horrible compared to SOE's dog. But mostly, there's no mystery. I didn't know what to expect of SOE, especially with its music, and that kept me intrigued, excited, edgy. I don't feel that when I play SOM.
Yeah this is a wonderful game. Secret of Mana loses some steam near the end of its run. I just found it got a little tiresome after awhile upon some replays :/ but both game are fantastic generally. They also buoyed by exemplary musical scores.
The music for this game is quite different from the typical square soundtrack from back then. It is more complex than many others and demonstrages some very god guitar playing. It's complexity means it is harder to get it stuck in your head (ffxii is the exact same way). It is more atmospheric and subtle but no les beautiful.
This game gets an undeserved bad reputation. It is a first effort abd has rookie mistakes because of it, but there is a lot to like about it, too
@Eletrotik Totally agree with you. I own both Evermore and Mana on cart for my SNES and still play and love them. You can see the love and skill that was put into these games when you play them :D
so then I'm proud to be a "real" gamer because I beat it about 12 years ago when I was 12 years old =) I still love this game as much as when I was so young. As I do with most other games and especially RPGs on SNES. Nothing will ever bring me to sell it or any of those masterpieces. I really do love KH 1&2, too, but as good as they may be... they won't ever beat these golden times of SNES RPGs. Let's keep those as a legend. ;-)
almost 43.000 views and 0 dislikes, that's almost as epic as the music of this game, i remember the day i bought it with its big box and i was eager to get home and start playing it, this game is one of my favourites
I'm so lucky to have played this back in the day, a really big impact on how I play guitar, along with Chrono Trigger and The oldschool Zelda's. But besides that a fun and interesting game to play.
3:25 make sme remember this part in the game, where you have to cross a desert to get to a marketplace. You were supposed to give an item to this skeleton guy who had a boat, he could take you there. If not, you would have to go through the desert yourself. I never found that item so I tried going through the desert. Shit was looooooooooooooooooooooooooong as fuck!!
wish there some games being made like this on DS!!!! i mean proper RPG's like this, mana, an old enix stuff, and zelda. apart from the zelda series on DS, there's no good action (not turn based i.e. Golden Sun) out there, unless i'm mistaken?. . . . .
Ah yes....Christmas Day, 1995, this game (along with Donkey Kong Country 2) was opened out of the shrinkwrap for the very first time, direct from my parents, direct from Kay-Bee toystore.
The SNES had the greatest library of games, of all time.
Smiles, Tears, and True Love came from the SNES, and was gladly returned from gamers all across the globe. Never again will such a console ever be as epic as the SNES.
R.I.P.? I don't think so, it's still alive with old fans, and new ones!

Only to say to you that the games that it should name are those that more I liked in my inancia, for pleasures colour. None of snes was of Square-enix, After Square fused with Enix the only jewelry that I liked it was FFX-2. I do not try with my comment to offend anybody simply I exhibit my pleasures for the biggest company that grew with us the gamers.
@SERGIOBJORK You did not offend me at all , don't worry ;) . Illusion of time is an Enix game and most if their games are pitiful , even at this period , that's what i was trying to say
I remember this game fondly. My nerd friends who like RPG's like CT, FF3/6 and such, they hate this game. They never played it because it got bad reviews, one friend refused to play it because it was made by americans, so damn ignorant it's irritating. Maybe it wasn't the best RPG, but the soundtrack made it so different, deep, with feeling. I think it's one of the better ones anyway :)
It seems this game was never released in Japan, for once Americans get a gem, did Square think it was too 'American' for the Japanese to comprehend?(Haha, Final Fantasy USA...)
I agree with kkeelan, absolutely mesmorizing. It really draws you in. I remember playing this game as an 11 year old and thinking, "wow this totally kicks Secret Of Mana's ass". One of the most overlooked video games, not just rpg, EVER.

My greatest wish is to be alive when they make you "beam" into the game and i could play SoE in "realtime" :) <3 <3 <3
@15Erox15 i fell ay man but there was other great games made in this era. Chrono trigger. Secret of mana (which i never finished)
Earthbound, Zelda
my list goes Earthbound/Zelda/Evermore as first... super mario RPG? theres a lot of great games, this was a AWESOME game though. i think we can agree there was ALOT of great games made at that point in time. wish they would do that now. its kinda hard to follow up to those kinda game though :(
This was one game where your NPC sidekick was actually helpful....vital at times even. If only programmers today took the same formula they used for the dog, we wouldn't have stupid sidekicks messing things up in todays games
I used to have this on my computer - emulators are cool! Didn't get too far, though...think I got stuck at the desert. Once I beat Secret of Mana, I'll need another Square game to play, so hopefully this comes out on VC!! Megaman 9 > 10, by the way. 10 is way harder, though, I think...just one or two bosses I can confidently take out with the megabuster
The CD soundtrack for this game also had a few extra tracks in higher quality (i.e. not the game midi). I loved 10 Print Hello World. I lost the CD and managed to contact Soule, but even he couldn't get ahold of it.
One of the greatest and most unique game soundtracks of its time and - dare I say - ever. It may not be complex but it was cathartic and very ambient - I have an appreciation for minimalism if it's done right and I believe this soundtrack got that right... a soundtrack doesn't NEED sweeping choruses, string sections, complicated chords or formulas to be good.... sometimes it just needs to emphasize the feelings and emotions of the story it supports... and this one did that expertly, IMHO.
@kkeelan 100% agreed! The instrumentals are incredible and the ambient sounds of a busy market place, a steaming bog, and the engine room of a great space station are awesome and have yet to be repeated in any game since then.
It's good to see Seoule [sp?] still doing what he does best but it's sad to see his still very sorely underrated in the public eye. He still gets his dues when it comes to awards and such... though I still think this is his best work. I think he should be composing for movies and not video games, if you ask me.
@kkeelan and jeremy soule is an expert on this kind of music! I also like his other work on the other games but this one is still my fav & secret of evermore is not a typical or generic magical kingdom type of rpg.
Dude i fucking totaly agree with you....without a doubt THIS game is the best game ever made never again such a game will be made fuck all this new shit...all those who played SNES in the 90 were blessed...and i still have this game too and i swear to god i will never give it away i will make a glass box and keep it 4ever <3 <3 <3
@kkeelan Minimalism isn't attractive because it's sounds are skim, it's attractive because it's easier to balance if you have less pieces.
Moving to 3D and high bitrate sound were a bad idea because the people who fed the industry were incapable of designing complex art which was consistent in it's theme. Simplicity forced artists to stylize their artwork into complete sets which were conveyable with little information, and so the gaming industry was born.
@kkeelan i so agree. the two best games ever made (imho) are secret of mana and secret of evermore, both share so many things, and one is the greatest music composed with so little avaiable mechanics. 8bit sound and better then all the pop made today :)
@kkeelan you got it... the soundtrack is more subtle and descreet in a way i really like. really fits the melancholic feeling of this game..... remembering playing this game really gives me the creeps. phantasmagoric
SoE unfortunately got passed over by people who dismissed it out of hand. Everyone who played it knows this one universal thing: it was absolutely awesome. This game had music, graphics, and a storyline with the best of them.
Still have this game for my SNES, along with Secret of Mana, Chrono Trigger, Super Mario RPG, and Final Fantasy 6(3). SNES really was the king of RPGs in its day.
It's still my favorite system of all time. What you stated is a large part of the reason, though there were a number of other games that drew me so closely to it as well.
@Th3jonman now you can also buy secret of mana 2 on ebay. gamers are making their own copys that actually work i have one its completely translated to english
@Th3jonman holy shizzit those are like my favorite games I have never met anyone to name that whole collection and yes I have all of them and have spent much time with each of them
I also prefer soe because I feel a lot more immersion into it. The fact that he is alone with his dog rather than in a party, and that hes in a different, strange world in which he does not belong. Its always interesting to witness new types of civilisation and trying to understand them. And of course, the music is incredible. So in point with the story and visuals.... I think this game is a masterpiece
Im really getting sick and tired of people comparing this game to Secret OF Mana.
This game plays nothing like SOM and it has it's own unique, amazing battle system. The atmosphere was amazing and IMO was better then SOM in most ways. My old roomate pissed me off because whenever i would talk about Secret OF Evermore he would compare it to SOE and say its a rip off piece of crap. Even though he never played the game and I played both SOE and SOM and honestly i prefer SOE alot more. ^_^
"There were two fairly simple reasons for swiping some of our systems from Mana. For one, we were supposed to be creating a Mana-like game, so it made sense to retain the interface. For another, those systems were proven to work well, and if you can steal the design for the wheel without getting sued for patent infringement... eh, why not?"
-Brian Fehdrau, lead programmer for Secret of Evermore.
I prefer SoE, too, but it did rip off SoM. Nothing wrong it, but they did do it and admit it.
Okay, in terms of storyline, artwork, and music, it is indeed distinctly different. However, consider the recharging mechanism employed after running or attacking, the menu rings, and the way attacking and weapon plus spell/alchemy leveling work (HP damage indicator looks identical; leveled up weapons can unleash more powerful attacks if you hold down the attack button, leveling for weapons and spells/alchemy is harder at higher levels). These aspects of gameplay are essentially identical.
I absolutely loved this game. I remember renting this game like 50 times at block buster. I wanted my own copy but i could never find it in stock at the video-game stores and back then during the snes days of gaming their was no such thing as ebay or online purchases for the general public. I think one time i begged my mom to buy the game from block buster because i was so addicted to playing it over and over again but they never sold it 2 me. BASTARDS!!! T_T
Mein Lieblings-rollenspiel. das Alter des Spiels ist mir nicht genug. Ich liebe es, wenn ich ein Joint geraucht hatte ich diese große entspannente Musik hören
Secret of Evermore has one of the greatest soundtracks of all time. People said it was crap because they compared it to Secret of Mana. It only used a similar game engine but otherwise it doesn't even try to be Secret of Mana. Evermore is it's own independant game which focused on atmosphere. Even today I feel that Secret of Evermore does a better job at absorbing the player into the game through it's brilliant use of atmospheric sound, music and beautiful drawn visuals.
Secret of Evermore deserves way more credit than it ever got. The game was a blast and I loved the geeky aspects of the storyline. The only downside I can think of was that they removed multiplayer. Being able to play as the dog would've been awesome.
but it unfairly got a bad rap - it was actually a pretty decent game. and, i'd never realized... the music for this game is actually *really* quite good!
The best RPG game I've played even better then final fantasy! Todays Rpg games sucks guns stupid sound turn based movement. in this game you feel free can do every move with easy spell menu not to complex its easy. The sound is superior no doubt even today!!

I love the music in this game. I had so much fun playing this when I was a kid.

This was one game where your NPC sidekick was actually helpful....vital at times even. If only programmers today took the same formula they used for the dog, we wouldn't have stupid sidekicks messing things up in todays games

the music of SoE was sooo creepy and mysterious. well done soundtrack!

It may not be complex but it was cathartic and very ambient - I have an appreciation for minimalism if it's done right and I believe this soundtrack got that right... a soundtrack doesn't NEED sweeping choruses, string sections, complicated chords or formulas to be good.... sometimes it just needs to emphasize the feelings and emotions of the story it supports... and this one did that expertly, IMHO.
kkeelan 2 years ago 70
@kkeelan 100% agreed! The instrumentals are incredible and the ambient sounds of a busy market place, a steaming bog, and the engine room of a great space station are awesome and have yet to be repeated in any game since then.
HisDivineShadow245 2 years ago 2
It's good to see Seoule [sp?] still doing what he does best but it's sad to see his still very sorely underrated in the public eye. He still gets his dues when it comes to awards and such... though I still think this is his best work. I think he should be composing for movies and not video games, if you ask me.
kkeelan 2 years ago
I like ambience and catharsis too, haha
cpthurme 2 years ago
@kkeelan and jeremy soule is an expert on this kind of music! I also like his other work on the other games but this one is still my fav & secret of evermore is not a typical or generic magical kingdom type of rpg.
Megadeth72 1 year ago 3
@kkeelan
15Erox15 1 year ago 4
@kkeelan Minimalism isn't attractive because it's sounds are skim, it's attractive because it's easier to balance if you have less pieces.
Moving to 3D and high bitrate sound were a bad idea because the people who fed the industry were incapable of designing complex art which was consistent in it's theme. Simplicity forced artists to stylize their artwork into complete sets which were conveyable with little information, and so the gaming industry was born.
Now it's measured by "Gameplay".

@superearthbender Beautiful way of describing how things have gone, can't agree more.
MuseTheBlue 1 year ago
@kkeelan i so agree. the two best games ever made (imho) are secret of mana and secret of evermore, both share so many things, and one is the greatest music composed with so little avaiable mechanics. 8bit sound and better then all the pop made today :)

SoE unfortunately got passed over by people who dismissed it out of hand. Everyone who played it knows this one universal thing: it was absolutely awesome. This game had music, graphics, and a storyline with the best of them.
thejapanesechallenge 2 years ago 14
This is SO true. It's the overshadowed twin of Secret of Mana (in the sense that so many gameplay elements are similar or identical), I think.
amimizunofan22 2 years ago
@thejapanesechallenge
I agree completely - I would cherish a port of this to DS but I doubt we'll ever see it. It's such a spectacular game though.

sorry for the typo and double post i meant to say that my roomate would compare secret of evermore to SOM not SOE.
Zerologic85 2 years ago
I also prefer soe because I feel a lot more immersion into it. The fact that he is alone with his dog rather than in a party, and that hes in a different, strange world in which he does not belong. Its always interesting to witness new types of civilisation and trying to understand them. And of course, the music is incredible. So in point with the story and visuals.... I think this game is a masterpiece
FloMonKish 2 years ago 6
Im really getting sick and tired of people comparing this game to Secret OF Mana.
This game plays nothing like SOM and it has it's own unique, amazing battle system. The atmosphere was amazing and IMO was better then SOM in most ways. My old roomate pissed me off because whenever i would talk about Secret OF Evermore he would compare it to SOE and say its a rip off piece of crap. Even though he never played the game and I played both SOE and SOM and honestly i prefer SOE alot more. ^_^
Zerologic85 2 years ago 3
"There were two fairly simple reasons for swiping some of our systems from Mana. For one, we were supposed to be creating a Mana-like game, so it made sense to retain the interface. For another, those systems were proven to work well, and if you can steal the design for the wheel without getting sued for patent infringement... eh, why not?"
-Brian Fehdrau, lead programmer for Secret of Evermore.
I prefer SoE, too, but it did rip off SoM. Nothing wrong it, but they did do it and admit it.
TrendyMoron 2 years ago 4
Okay, in terms of storyline, artwork, and music, it is indeed distinctly different. However, consider the recharging mechanism employed after running or attacking, the menu rings, and the way attacking and weapon plus spell/alchemy leveling work (HP damage indicator looks identical; leveled up weapons can unleash more powerful attacks if you hold down the attack button, leveling for weapons and spells/alchemy is harder at higher levels). These aspects of gameplay are essentially identical.
amimizunofan22 2 years ago
I absolutely loved this game. I remember renting this game like 50 times at block buster. I wanted my own copy but i could never find it in stock at the video-game stores and back then during the snes days of gaming their was no such thing as ebay or online purchases for the general public. I think one time i begged my mom to buy the game from block buster because i was so addicted to playing it over and over again but they never sold it 2 me. BASTARDS!!! T_T

Secret of Evermore has one of the greatest soundtracks of all time. People said it was crap because they compared it to Secret of Mana. It only used a similar game engine but otherwise it doesn't even try to be Secret of Mana. Evermore is it's own independant game which focused on atmosphere. Even today I feel that Secret of Evermore does a better job at absorbing the player into the game through it's brilliant use of atmospheric sound, music and beautiful drawn visuals.
insomniapr1 2 years ago 5
Secret of Evermore deserves way more credit than it ever got. The game was a blast and I loved the geeky aspects of the storyline. The only downside I can think of was that they removed multiplayer. Being able to play as the dog would've been awesome.
