@bassralphy4:57 I remember watching (taping) this from HBO or Showtime back in the 70's and I was tracking with the drummer. I think it was Basie who started the the chording early around 5:17 and turned the beat around. I'm impressed that the drummer realized what happend so quickly after his solo to get back on track.
It's great not only to see basie amused (as usual), but also impressed. Eaton's flashy and doesn't sacrifice the groove. How many musicians can do that?
This is the same clip, and certainly better video quality that I have posted. It's a shame that Roy's solo is broken up, or this would be the perfect clip of this performance of "Booty's Blues"!
pity about roy's solo being broken by the elements, but y'know I was also struck by the same thing regarding cleveland eaton's playing on this video, i think he was clowning cause he was supposed to hand over his solo to the sax and never looked up to make the changeover at 2.02mins.
Basie is sparse and subtle as usual. I love Zoot and Roy. But the bass player displeases me: I hate that electric sounding tone, without depth, and I hate his clowning. I must be a square not to dig that, but can't be helped.
Now that you mention it, watching it a second time through, I notice the electric tone of the bass, too. It doesn't necessarily offend me, but I'm curious as to what is causing it. Do they have a pickup on the bass, instead of microphoning it?
Let's face it, it's Cleveland's show!

Well, a piano is more powerful than a bass. My bassist is usualy wired while I'm not (on the piano).
rustyspo0ns 2 years ago
think about it if the bass is wired then count would have to as well if you notice none of them are playing directly in the mikes

Well, the intro is the same intro to Segue in C, but it could also be Good Times Blues. :)
