  • Great Video! I can't believe they put the wrong lead screw gearing on it. Typical Chinese incompetence! I've got one Grizzly tool! It'll be my last. Now I just buy Old American Iron. It's a lot cheaper and a lot better quality. I've never looked back. I'll never buy another Chinese tool again. And I work in China!

  • Can you get into more detail about the lighting upgrade? i.e. what type socket fixture had, where you got your replacement...

You did a very good job, thank you

  • @elginrunner The replacement is an MR16 LED bulb that I got from Fry's. I forget if it fit into the original electrical plug, but I had to change the voltage source since the original bulb was 24V, and the LED bulb is designed for 12V. I added a small wall wart to the lathe's electrical box and connected it to the wires headed to the work light.

  • I have a G4003 and highly recommend it over the G4003G. I've had my G4003 since 2006 and it's an amazing lathe for the price $2195 (...back then). The G4003G is overpriced and offers little in the way of extra features to justify the increase in price. Watch some actual gunsmithing videos ... there's nothing on this lathe that's needed for chambering, blue printing action, etc. It's a rip off ... the money you save by buying the G4003, you can buy a quality Bison chuck!

  • @RCTruckPulling Outboard spider brass tip screws - $25 .... torque wrench on tailstock ... waste of money when using a floating reamer holder for chambering ... D1-5 camlock ... odd ball size (6 studs and not 5 as stated) and it's more expensive and not as easy to for buy as a D1-4! Lamp on carriage ... cheap and gets smoking hot! These so called extras Grizzly claims you need for gunsmithing is laughable at best! Tip .. look at used American iron since Grizzly keeps raising it's prices

  • @RCTruckPulling All good points, but used American machines are either going to the recycling yard or outside practical shipping distance. Also old American machines aren't very common in good condition. Almost all the Southbend lathes I looked at were in terrible shape and I didn't have the money to restore them. So I got my hands on a G4003 and have been very happy with it.

  • Great review. Thanks. I'll be moving up from a mini-lathe too. :)

  • Fantastic...thank you...I've been looking at this lathe for a year and you just convinced me to get it. I really appreciated your video!

  • Good video I like how honest you are that means alot. Thanks

  • i have the 10x22 i converted to CNC. will eventually get a larger one to keep manual and will probably be this model!

  • Very nice video, what is the travel of the top slide?

    Thank you

  • Great review! Thanks for taking the time to post! Asset to youtube!

  • "its very nice!" " its very cool!" "its amazing!" "its very well!" "prety good!" Video is 90% of these words. Fuckin advertising!!

  • hi, where can i buy this machine... thanks

  • A very hellpful video. Thanks for posting it!

  • What size tool bits does the quick change holder use?

  • @junkyardjoker They are very adjustable -- probably anything from 1/4 to 5/8 should be fine.

  • @bkraz333 @junkyardjoker means, is this an AXA tool post, a BXA, etc...

  • Ben, that was very useful and nicely done.

  • Ben, that's a really nice lathe. Thanks for making this video. I really enjoy your youtube channel. This is better than watching TV. Just be sure to always wear eye protection. I know someone that lost an eye from a small chip of metal.

  • Great video man! Thanks for sharing! I've recently gotten into reloading and gunsmithing and I'd love to take it all to the next level with a lathe! I'll probably start out with the Harbor Freight model as you did before I drop $3500 :)

  • Thank you so much for the info. I'm a new gunsmith that was wondering if this lathe would suit my needs. Thanks to you I believe this lathe will be perfect for my shop.

  • Nice review and demonstration, thanks!

  • Nice stuff Ben. I am an old Brit (American now) - the old lathe I kept from way back was a "Little John: 5 1/2" ...... very old! It does have a taper pulley drive and so speeds vary across the whole range by just a simple lever.

Your new one has some nice features. I wonder if you can put a handle into the spindle, as I cut threads sometimes by hand turning instead of power drive... using a home made crank handle. Saves disasters particularly when cutting a course and deep square thread.

  • I think i just made up my mind on which lathe ill be buying this fall.

  • Sweet lathe!

  • Congrats on the new lathe!

  • Yes it was,,I want one,,

  • Jeeex that's one whopper of an upgrade Ben, I'd love that machine.

    Great video. TFS

  • that's one heck of an upgrade.

  • Seems like a nice machine.
