erm.. i'm chinese and i found nearly everyone has his own way holding chopsticks. and i think using the wide end of chopsticks to pick up food from a sharing bowl is kinda freaky.. come on no one does that in china
Ehem, actually, to those who are saying 'whatever, it doesn't matter about etiquette or how you use 'em' are wrong. If you're dining in a foreign place, respect their etiquette. It depends on where you are, and in general rude to stab with them. In Korea you have different etiquette; no lifting the bowl, and don't eat every SINGLE piece of rice. It means they need to get you more, basically. :]
God that's a hell of a lot of rules for a damn chopstick. Just eat the freaking thing! Honestly, who gives a shit if you stab it, put it in straight (no sexual puns please) or rub them together to make them work? Christ! Chopsticks SUCK.
dude there are no rules for using chopsticks, its just this video making it sound complicated. I'm chinese, and i see chopsticks is just like a fork or a spoon, a eating utensil. You can do whatever the hell you want with it, its two sticks for gods sake.
well, i personally think chopsticks are a bit more useful than both a fork or a spoon. A chopstick grabs, while a fork stabs, and a spoon lifts. I find grabbing things alot more easier than both lifting and stabbing.
Tap them on the table being sure to pickup lots of bacteria, but never use the used end of the chopstick in a shared bowl? Because the table , where people put their wallets/phones is so clean. Great advice.
<3 internet, i sat with my chinese food infront of the computer, and i forgot to bring a fork up to the computer room, I AINT GOING DOWN AGAIN! all i had were chopsticks. i cant use this shit! gogo youtube!
The part about getting the food nearest to you is quite right. Whenever I try to find the biggest piece of chicken, my dad yells at me. Do any of your Asian parents tell you that you get the drumsticks of a chicken if your the youngest?
Wow...none of us are Japanese or Asian (or Chinese) and I never been taught how to use them But once I got some that were not even opened up yet, at a garage sale. (It was a big pack of them too, which was awesome!)
And once I started using them, I actually used them right! O_O
And I've even ate all the rice...and knew about most of these! :O
I guess I have some type of Japanese/Asian/Chinese DNA or mind or something? :D
A couple of years ago my Japanese friend encores my Famly over for dinner and I didn't have much internen access so I practaces with pencles lol then when I went over we used American forks so I did all that work for nothing :(
I have to say, I never learned how to use them properly and now I automatically cross them when using, which works quite well for me. But I can't get rid of the habit. :(
the last step kind of contradicts with other chinese hospitality, it is the hosts obligation to make sure its guests are full, if your bowl is empty it means there wasnt enough.. yet if you leave any its also an insult 0o
what i would be worried about in learning is that i might insult people... there are so many ways to offend.. question..... what it you drop a chopstick. is that offensive? or if you point with them during conversation? thank you.
@fairhillnorrie Don't drop em and don't point with them. If you are going to grab something to drink, put the chopsticks down horizontally on chopstick holder or plate. You may bring plate up to you if you wish (so you don't drop your food.)
wow I havent really noticed anything about my skill for chopsticks but I was at this korean place with some white friends like quicky picking up peas with them then throwing them into my mouth with the chopsticks and they were all like WOOAHAH and I was like ''wtf'' im asian
xD Me and my cousin went over to our friend's house, and she made noodles. Both my cousin and friend (who is Chinese) used the chopsticks...I was the only one that didn't, because I didn't know how! X.X Epic fail. But now I can run up to them and proudly say I can use chopsticks.
now listen i want to know how to use chopsticks.now dont you tell that rubbing my damn chopsticks to get the damn splinters off the china can kiss my my ass
chopsticks are easy to use, i started using them a month ago when i was introduced to sushi and now everytime i get asian food i use em. i like the elegance
also, the "eat every last grain of rice" thing may be true if you were invited to a family meal, but when eating out you should always leave some food in your bowl/plate. this is to "give face" to your host (the guy paying fro the bill, chinese DO NOT go dutch), indicating that you have been well provided for -> had you fill and can eat no more.
"communal" chopsticks is rarely used in china. in chinese culture, eating together is a bonding experience of trust and friendship. the host will often place food into the guests' rice bowl (using their *gasp* chopstick that had touched their mouth). if a chinese family invite you to dine with them and you request "communal" chopstick...they will not embarrass you, and will appear very eager to provide the extra chopsticks. but please note that you have created a very awkward atmosphere.
@ornitorrinco01 Because people used to be poor, not everyone could afford cutlery back in the day. Southeastern Asians used to eat with their hands, so Chopsticks were a logical solution. People could easily eat with forks nowadays, but It's part of the culture now since It's been like that for thousands of years. Whatever suits you best man, everyone can eat with whatever they want to eat with. I think everything is fine as long as none of us have to eat with our bare hands again.
@Xhyloid Thanks I agree with your word, whatever suits you best. As for eating with your bare hands I believe there are still some cultures that do it.
