the japanese had been ahead in the fuel economy arena since the 70s thats over 40 years ago and way ahead the prius hybrid is 12 year old technology and a million sold.

Actually when you compare new Japanese and Domestic models of similar size, the MPG is about the same. The Feds should give Detroit a loan, but stipulate that useless "look at me Ive got money" vehicles like Hummers, Escalades, Navigators, etc. be dropped, and only the smaller cars with good MPG be built, along with more hybrids, etc.

What you fail to realize about the car company and fuel efficiency if that they are in conjuncion with the oil companies.

Lobbyists go to Washington and push for not wanting high effiency fuel bills being passed so they all make money in conjunction.

The current CEO's are tied to their respective companies, meaning that if the companies fail, their assests would be seized and they could join their former employees in the soup line. If they attempted to resign or retire, they would get a FAIR severance package; we'd throw them out of their private jets tethered to ACTUAL GOLDEN PARACHUTES!!!

Companies produce what the buyers want. If there was a market demand for green and people were willing to pay the extra dough for the cars, then the big three would make them. If that was the case, the only car on the road would be the Prius.

That was probably the obtuse statement I've read in this entire thread. Why the hell do you think there are different brands of anything ? So that the consumer can have option. While the europeans and japanese decided to make fuel efficient cars as well as high-performance cars, the big 3 decided to pump out more gas guzzlers. In fact, Ford killed (literally) their entire electric line.

Bankingcartel- While I would prefer control of money supply be put under the treasury department, I feel that giving this money to consumers is far superior to handing these guys money for more layoffs and plant idling. You know that the FED's stock pays a 6% dividend whether the economy grows or not? Google "who owns the Fed". They say they don't own it, but just have stock in it huh...? They say it's not for profit, but yet they get 6% dividends huh...?

They consolidate, downsize, merge, and become competitive again so they can once again thrive and produce a profit. That's how the system is supposed to work!!

Can somebody please explain to me why we're still protecting Japan for free under the terms we set after WW2? Japan has no military expenses (unlike us), so the Japanese government just pours all their money into research and development for companies like sony and toyota and then those companies run ten times more efficiently than American companies like Ford and GE because they receive tons of money from the Japanese government, then the Japanese companies put our companies out of business.WTF

We make transmission parts for all auto makers, when we won contract for honda they flew over for 2 months and worked side by side with us, made sure we knew the part, and said we rather one part perfect then a 1000 half way decent parts, now with ford etc we would send out everything as they had such a wide open their prints, this is why the company fail, they are cutting cost on quality to keep the workers high paid, we do every part of the car and send to them to install and we make half
