The cubs are competition to the male and are genetically weak if fathered by a defeated male. I know it seems cruel but nature is about survival of the fittest and advancement of the best possible genes to carry the species forward.

Farm cats and street cats do this too. It's not just a lion thing. It seems whenever felines form social groups, the dominant males seek out and kill kittens/cubs that are not his. On the softer side, female cats who are freinds will nest together, have their kittens at the same time, and even nurse each other's kittens.

this video is bollocks. i recognise about 3 different documentaries in this, they've mashed it together to get a completely different story. that scene where the mothers attack the new lion for instance is actually them attacking what they thought was an intruder but was infact their pride male. the took the rest of their frustration out on each other

@gillygilbert1986 if I recall, one of them was "Big Cat Diary" narrated by Simon King. His take on it was that the lionesses mistook the father of their cubs as an invader. When the lionesses found out, they took the anger out on each other. I don't know if I can trust animal planet and a chunk of other (lion) wildlife documentaries because I see so many deja vu.
