  • how do you keep your bucket solution cool in the hot sun? I had problems with the temperature in my 5 gallon buckets last year.

  • walmart has triple outlet air pumps for 5 bucks. run 3 bucket setups, with one pump.

  • what test meter is best?

  • anybody else feel like hugging this dude?

  • like a list i can print and bring with me lol

  • any chance of getting a detailed list of materials needed ect.. listed i now have watched like 20 videos on this ( btw this one was prob best one thats why im asking ) and so far everyone like yeah use an elbow if u have one if not go get it but they never specify i tried to go to lowes and ask for an elbow they called security

  • That's what she said

  • Water level is upto a 1/2 in below net pot..so roots are hanging in water

  • None of these DWC videos explains how high the water levels should be. I think thats a pretty important fact to mention. Any advice? Thanks and good job!

  • Great video! I have a question though… Can plants be transplanted into soil for flowering after they have vegged under this system?

  • Haha I ain't growing tomatoes...

  • thankyou thats a nice setup you got going to try for sum habrenero peppers

  • Looks like u planted with stone or something can u use soil

  • @Rugs420

No, soil would eventually be washed away. I usually use Hydroton (expanded clay aggregate) or Growstones (recycled glass product). I have also used Hydroton mixed with rockwool cubes - that works as well. That was good question - thanks for asking!

  • how often do you have to change the water?

  • @smeightytwo

Approximately every three weeks. Usually drain, fill with clean water then drain again then fill with new nutrient solution. I have gotten great results with this method.

  • @rwkleinman how do you do it with a plant in it? have someone hold the plant up while you dump it?

  • Very informative for newbs!

  • @420shamanhealer

Thank you - I am glad you see some value in this simple system. I have done many experiments in hydroponics the past 30 years; so far, this is the easiest that works better than anything else I have used.

  • @neon1evangelion

I hear you and I agree!

  • Great video.

  • @Studio102

    Thanks!

  • So you are not using an air stone for this set up? It looks like the water still gets plenty of aeration.

  • @fragton7

Right - no air stone! The water and roots get plenty of good air without the stone. Of course, one "expert" told me it won't work as well without the stones but I have proven otherwise. So far, everyone that uses this system is having excellent results. Thanks for the comment!

  • @fragton7 While its true, it will work 'just as well' but having an airstone gives more bubbles. In the end you want MORE bubbles. Each bubble has oxygen in it. What do you think is better, 4 really big bubbles or a 100 little bubbles spread throughout. It doesn't really seem logical as to why he doesn't want airstones. They are only 2 bucks and provide more bubbles. BUT you can get away without one.

  • Apply lubrication, insert, then turn to the final position. Well said my friend.

  • @wilmy881

That procedure may be applied to many, many things.... Thanks for the comment!

  • so i have a hole bunch of bagseed i wana germinate it put some plants in my bac yard and grow some indoor anything i should know with the outdoor?

  • This is awesome. The whole time i thought i needed to buy big ass totes n cut holes buy trays, pumps, tubes and other parts. This looks fairly simple. My question is still the light? What kind if light for indoor growth? Thanx. Kool vid.

  • @lx86420 Thanks for the comment! I use T5 fluorescent lighting for indoor veg growth for low light-energy plants like greens and herbs and run the TDS of between 500 to 1,000 depending on plant size. pH generally around 6.5.

  • not a word about cost!! And today money is tight for a lot of ppl

  • @thinkyourright Thanks for the comment! Except for maybe a bucket of dirt - this is probably the cheapest active system you can get. One bucket, one net basket, a 5 gal bucket, a cheap air pump and some hose. I can just about guarantee that the plant in the bucket system will grow faster than in the dirt system.

  • so this sytem does,nt use a airstone?

  • @steveeb1269

Nope, toss the airstone - just uses plain, raw air - and it works GREAT! Easiest, cheapest and most efficient system I have ever used.

  • @rwkleinman ok, cool. and thanks for your reply , seems like a very good system. will a square tub with 4 - 6 net pots, work well like that ? peace n stay high.

  • @steveeb1269 Yes - I have three busboy trays operating in my garage for the Winter growing herbs - I will do a video on it soon. The only thing different , other than the shape, is I extended the air tube to the center of the container. Good luck - this works great. There is nothing better than the KISS method!

  • @rwkleinman ok, great. i,ll be looking forward to seeing your new vid. and you answered my next question, i was going to ask ; if i could use a shorter tank, cause i dont want a tall tank. i see a lot use the big tall totes. so actually if i use bus trays; it would be shallow water culture? i have never used dwc , i have always done either wick or flood systems , and have over 100 of all different types of self watering planters. thanks for all your help.

  • @rwkleinman hmm im quite confident that it would still benefit alot from airstone or diffuser, the reason is when you split the air in to smaller bubbles you get more surface area between the water and air and that is where the oxygen transfer happens, on the surface

so you wanto max out the surface area, its not just the amount of air

    good tutorial anyways!

  • That has to be THE MOST informative, hands on hydroponice video i've seen. Thank you soo much! i know understand how to make a system and i understand the concept!

  • @MrBuckguy92

Great! No matter how complicated some folks try to make hydroponic gardening systems - the simplest always seems to work best. Thanks for the excellent comment!

  • @MrBuckguy92 Why, thank you - thank you very much! Always nice to get positive feedback.

  • what size air pump is that and how many 5 gal buckets can you run off of it

  • @The1234cadillac

I just use a small, standard sized pump for one bucket, a double output pump for two and so on. You can get a large air pump with a outlet manifold to feed 10 buckets if desired.

  • Very nice video Ron, Love that Gynura Procumbens...

    Nice system for small investment.

  • @STINGRAY88888

Thanks stingray! There was a typo in the text but that shows I am not perfect! The system turns out to be the best I have used, proves that you can do successful hydroponic gardening without spending big bucks. Most of all, thanks for turning me on to the Gynura plant - I believe it has helped change my metabolism which is an incredible thing - especially at my age! I have lost over 20 pounds in a shade less than three months - shades of Joe Namath! I will keep you updated.

  • Could I run the air hose through a drilled hole in the top of the lid and save some worry about that hole at the bottom of the bucket leaking? If I wanted to change the water I could just have another bucket with nutrient solution made up and waiting, transfer the plant from old to new bucket. What do you think? Also, how do you know if your air pump is effecient enough, any certain output number to look for?

  • @ArizonaAdventures Chrck out my older post on the DWC Bucket System with the air bubbler - works great too!

  • @ArizonaAdventures thats what i do is have two 5 gal buckets and just pick the plant up and put it in the other bucket ...i think it easy not having to worry about a water mess.

  • that's what i do is have two 5 gal buckets and just pick the plant up and put it in the other bucket ...i think it easy not having to worry about a water mess.

  • glad to see a new video just as I found your page :) Keep 'em coming!

  • You ROCK and I don't mean CLAY rocks...oh, well maybe lol....thanks for the reply too.

  • So you can just let it bubble and no Fld&Drain? I saw a solar powered airpump but forgot the site. Do you know of one? THANKS for the vid.

  • @101AOK

Yes - just let run 24/7 and the roots get plenty of air and will not rot. Replace the nutrient solution at least once a month and add one cap of hydrogen peroxide and about 4 drops of Super thrive or a vitamin supplement to the nutrient and make sure the nutrient solution is kept up towards the middle of the net basket. These systems are extremely simple and work unbelievably well - all 4 of my set-ups like this are kicking butt! Thanks for the good comment.

  • It's great to see a new video from you Ron. I would have to agree, DWC is the easiest. I guess i'm partial to slightly more complicated systems only because I like to fiddle with things. Knowing your history, you're no stranger to fun and interesting designs. I've been slacking this year working more with self watering container gardening. I actually don't have any hydroponic systems going at this time but it's good to see you do. Do you still use the same email address?

  • @FenderGibsonWashburn

Hey Paul - glad to hear from you!

Yeah - I like complicated systems too but my wallet tells me to keep it simple! I have several outside projects going for this Summer, so I imagine you will see my stuff on youtube again pretty soon. Yes, same address - let me know what you've been up to.
