You brainwashed idiots need to stop posting trite replies to my original comment. That is, unless you have your historically undisputed facts, recognized by WORLD history, correct. I love our country as much as any of you, but if you disagree with my constitutional right to post my opinion, than YOU are not American.
What about the occupation of Iceland by American troops in 1941? I'd say that is quite contradictory for a government which professed as its main concern the keeping of the United States out of foreign wars.
And to you fools, who blindly think that 'Merica is always right, rah-rah, OIL rah-rah... Look at the foreign policy of that time. We were in NO way different from Japan. What about the exchange of American destroyers for British bases in the Caribbean and in Newfoundland? This was a clear departure from the requirements of neutrality and was also a violation of specific American laws. A conference of top government lawyers at the time decided that the destroyer deal put our country directly
Yeah he instituted the new deal, but it is clearly documented that he only did this for his public image. This is why, when push cam to shove, feeling the pressure from his wealthy peers, he taxed the lower classes income, which he was supposed to be helping thrive. Create blue collar jobs, and then tax the shit out of them to garner revenue for our country instead of taxing the wealthy like he should have been.
Furthermore, one of the only reasons we went to war was because we were in the process of creating an intellectual coup to seize control of Russia. However, the Manchurian war, which in regards to our foreign policy, not unlike today, did not concern us whatsoever. FDR was a power hungry mad-man, and a good old boy pawn to his cabinet, who tried to compensate for his weak physical visage with strongarm tactics to silence those that rightfully critiqued his pitiful term during those times.
Why do you guys think China has shown such leniency to us in regards to the debt we owe them? It is only because of our help in WW2. Anyone else is a fool to think otherwise. Yes, Pearl Harbor was an absolute tragedy, but it was not unprovoked. It's funny to me how we are living in a fascist state RIGHT now, but the people who are replying to my comment are indoctrinated to the point of looking upon our country's actions as wholesome...

As a proud American, I must apologize to the Japanese nation! The reason that the country of Japan (which was neutral throughout most of the great war) became involved, is that America ruthlessly & inconsiderately took their entire oil supply from them. The Japanese fought valiantly, with their incredibly small number of soldiers. They embodied the meaning of warrior in regards to the world stage. If they had near the amount of soldiers as the allies, than world history would be QUITE different!
@glassjaw890 The Japanese were on the Allied side during WW1, they had actually benefited during that time by goods. They took their oil supply because they were engaged in a brutal war with China, Nanjing anyone? And as for the meaning of the "warrior", Nanjing again and many pacific islanders and Filipinos would say otherwise.
@glassjaw890 WOW!! Are you really kidding?!? If not, you have revised history to a point of being an enormous lie. "As a proud American"...as a proud American we DON"T need to apologize. There is so much wrong here it is incredible.
@Toddinfantry Try explaining that to the Japanese soldiers that I work physical therapy on. Yes, there was a conflict of interest in regards to national ambitions, but we only got involved when the prospect of energy sources came about. To everybody that will read this,
@glassjaw890 What??!!?? So you give phys therapy to old Japanese soldiers huh? Actually, that has no bearing on your posts. Your posts are wrong. Your ideals are wrong, and you call yourself a proud American. You are so full of BS it verges on pathetic. Your knowledge of history and your interpretation of it is horrendous. Apologize for what...fool. You sound like our President...apologizing for our country. Go away!
@Toddinfantry Yeah, I check out your channel. It's hilarious how you think you're some war hero, on par with the WW2 vets, just because you were part of Iraqi Freedom or Kuwait. Just because you fired a few rounds at a villager thousands of meters away and missed doesn't make you shit, cocksucker. If you had died during that self interested military action that the Herbert took, than America would now be a greater place because we would have one less cretin among our populous. ROT IN HELL!
@glassjaw890 Well this just shows your complete ignorance and creative ability to make s**t up. At NO time have I EVER claimed to be a war hero, nor have I ever considered myself on par with WW2 vets. You seem to think you can just create things out of thin air. Never served in the sandbox but did my time in Beirut. And what are you? Other than real good at personal attacks and cussing...not much. What have you done? Ever served? You make me laugh, criticism with no action.
Respond to this video... America only became involved in World War II because of vested interests in energy sources. Our country is privileged and lucky to have been the deciding factor in winning the war, but it wasn't out of goodwill as the movies would have you believe, it was a carefully plotted political strategy by FDR
@glassjaw890 "energy sources" WTF are you talking about? You are an ignorant buffon if this is your belief system. "Deciding factor" are you for real? Try just one GD ounce of research and learning because you are so far off base here as to make you sound a little looney.
@Toddinfantry By "energy sources" I mean oil, you ignorant piece of shit. You were born into a Philistine, blue collar family and had no chance or desire to develop your intellect to think beyond what Fox news tells you. When you're done screaming your voice hoarse at your local tea party meeting, and pleasuring yourself to the sound of Rush Limbaugh's voice, than come try to argue history with me, you fucking retard. By the way, it's spelled BUFFOON.
@glassjaw890 And there we have it Ladies and Gentlemen...the true glassjaw comes out. A rampant liberal who calls himself a "patriotic American" while a continuing to argue anti-American beliefs. You are quite typical of a liberal, all yelling and cussing when confronted, attacking ppl and not facts. Very typical. By the way, I am not at all what you think so you are, again, wrong. But if you wish to continue my entertainment with your grade school antics, please, by all means continue.
Anti-American beliefs?Based on what? Your personal preference to carry out war, regardless of any tax that war may take on any human life or liberty, as it relates to true government? What does liberal or conservative have to do with anything? You speak like a person that has fallen into typical American political conditioning. You're taking sides, when the focal point of American efforts should focus on the protection and global cultivation of any and all life, regardless of political platform
@glassjaw890 No...based on your posts. You should go back and reread your own posts and that is why you are deemed anti-American. You apologize to Japan?? and continue to denegrate all this country has done. Sure, the country has made mistakes, but look at your post from one month ago, is that really how you think? The side I take is for the ppl of the United States...plain and simple. "Global cultivation of any and all life"....BAH. What kind of crap is that?
@Toddinfantry You are the EXACT reason why our nation will undergo yet another civil war. I guarantee it! Americans no longer see each other as brothers. Instead they see each other as opposing political sides. Don't you see that this has been devised by people in the position of higher authority? Create a squabble amongst the supposed free, while the rich pocket the money from the carnage that shall ensue. You can hurl whatever insults you want at me, and though I may despise them, I fully
@glassjaw890 And I am proud to be the reason...to bad you hate this country so much that all you do is bash it. I have, am, and will always be willing to lay down my life for my country. I did NOT say for my gov't. You are correct in that we have become so politically divided as to be ungovernable. Wait until everyone figures that out and then you will see your "civil war".
@glassjaw890 Proud American my ass. The US cut off oil from Japan because they condemned what they were doing to the Chinese and other Asian countries. Then the US was openly attacked, not just as Pearl, but military installations were under attack all over the Pacific. I respect Japanese servicemen. But the War was unavoidable. Tojo wanted War.
@glassjaw890 When Pearl Harbor happened Japan was at war for more than 30 years with MILLIONS and MILLIONS of soldiers invading and occupying mainland Asia killing hundreds of thousands and millions of Chinese and Koreans and everyone else while torturing and raping them, forcing incest on them and doing human experiments all in the cruelest of ways, worse than the Nazis. The U.S. stopped trading oil for this reason. Learn your history WE APOLOGIZE FOR NOTHING! They apologize for everything.
@glassjaw890 America didnt steal anything, they had an oil embargo on Japan. And there were reasons for this. Did the Japanese fight valiantly in Nanking?,,,,,,
@joeyhol75 I have no idea what you're trying to get at? I never said the Japanese were morally right. In MY worthless opinion, replying to YOUR worthless opinion, the Japanese were never right. In ANY military and political endeavor, during the course of the big one. All I'm trying to impart to people that will see this video, is the thought that there are two sides to every story in all of recorded world history. A reason for any decision, be it good or bad, forced or unprovoked.
@dirtyguitar1997 and the japanese soldiers weren't "real soldiers"? of the 20,000 japanese soldiers on the island, 262 became POWs the rest were dead by battle, suicide banzai charges, or by mass cave suicides. im not asking that you be sympathetic towards the enemy but I do ask that you respect them.
@varocks183 and they didnt even include the most important part. "Nearly all Japanese defenders are killed or missing." of the 20,000 japanese troops, 262 became pow's. others are all dead fighting a battle they knew they were going to lose.
@MaddenitesUNITE And? Atleast they had the balls to continue fighting, Ask me that's extreme patriotism to not allow yourself to be taken Prisoner and fight to the death. Out gunned, Out manned, And surrounded the Japanese soldiers did a Superb job in defending against soldiers who had almost twice their number and had Semi Automatic rifles instead of bolt action rifles- not to mention the Navy and Air support the Americans had when attacking
By this time, the Japanese had abandoned banzai charges in favor of well dug in, mutually supportive defensive positions. They were matchless at this kind of defensive fighting. The battleships' 16 inch shells were ineffective. Couple this with the Japanese Army's "fight to the last man" policy, and the result was that our troops had to smoke them out of their caves one by one with grenades, flamethrowers, and bulldozers. Only half the Marines who raised the flag on Mt. Suribachi survived.
@0:24 if I were in that soldier shoes, I may have pissed my pants. The difference between Nazi German and Imperial Japanese soldier is that the later fight ti'll death and worship their Emperor while the former has the war machinery advantage and they surrender in thousand not like the Japs.
@Hamptoncltn I've heard this poem before, it speaks the truth. God bless the brave soldiers and Marines who survived this terrible battle, and those who did not. May we always honor their memories, especially by striving for a just and honorable peace, so their terrible sacrifice will not have to be repeated.
Check out the book My Cousin Killed Hitler based on the story of Marshal Zhukov. It tells a family secret about him. If only Hitler knew that one of those he hunted became the hunter instead.
@guarnere59 U.S. Marines are called Marines, not soldiers. Soldiers are from the Army. Here's a breakdown of what you should call the men from each branch: US Army = Soldiers, US Marines = Marines, US Navy = Sailors, US Air Force = Airmen. The US Army was not at Iwo Jima. It was US Marines and US Navy that fought there.
0:06 that fella is swinging his arm like a girl as he runs. These troops can't even run in an athletic manner. Looks like a bunch of women running for a shopping bargain.
Why is every History channel Documentary about WW2 based on Americans ? Europeans get only brief mentions.Soviets are dismissed with a few sentences.
Most importantly,What about the war in Asia and Africa ?The French army at that time was 70% non-white,the British army 65% non-white,Yanks-10%-odd-Then why are all the guys in these videos square-jawed blue-eyed Aryans?According to HC,there was nothing called ANZAC,the Japanese land armies all got lost in the jungles and Allies obeyed Geneva law
@redtihor1 Hmm. I see your point but the History Channel is an American network. A British network will show British history and so on....And as for the second point I see what you're saying. I wasn't aware the ethnic makeup was so non white but perhaps you're right about that. I know that lots of Native Americans fought for us. Do you think there was an agenda to who was to be filmed? The vast majority of Americans back then were white and I saw a couple blacks in other films in the pacific.
@jbjindra After the fall of France,CDG's free French armies were largely recruited from among North African Muslims. And Britain largely relied upon it's colonies for soldiers. It does make military sense-If you've got colonies with populations ten-twenty times that of yours,it makes sense to use them...
Unfortunately,in those days, reports of Jats and Berbers kicking Nazi ass didn't make for good p.r. in Europe and the US.The Paris victory parade was actually planned days in advance !!
@jbjindra you can see footage of a Japanese-American platoon in action here on youtube. Simply search for the channel "unknownww2incolor" and look for their "Japanese vs Germans video". The footage was pulled from the Romano Archives in Italy. Enjoy
Great vid, but I really enjoyed the audio. Military broadcasts were an important part of the war. By March 1945, Americans were growing weary. Roosevelt was dead, the Reich was all but finished, and Japan had lost her empire. Still an invasion of Japan seemed imminent. The pentagon projected as many as a million US casualties before Japan would submit unconditionally. Ultimately we would never know if that level of sacrifice was needed. It still makes me think. That's why I love history.
@electricatom2 Why do you say that? Germans and Japanese were folks just like us. There were rotten psychos serving in American, British and Soviet army too.
@OnlyLifeMatters listen its little sad - yes... but i dont give a shit about them, they started the war, they society allow them to do it, democracy was fucked up in loud applauses when they armies were destroying my country, and the most saddest thing is the germans didnt pay up yet for what they destroyed, and i think they dont, well its because of british, they always wanted stronger german ally than french so after 2 great world wars they of course say that germany shouldnt pay that much
@OnlyLifeMatters everyone has something to learn, no one knows everything -_- my previous opinion was based on how british didnt wanted to punish germany after 1 and 2 world wars - this are facts boy, after world war 1 churchil (god bless him) made some points (13? dont remember) 1 of them was to create independent poland from teritorry of germany austro-hungary and russia, the plan was poland should have at least 40 mln people within but brittish didnt agree and cut off to 30 mln
@electricatom2 A few years ago Germany finally finished paying all the restitution it owed since WW1. Besides after WW2 America paid to rebuild France. Germany did pay its dues but if you want to know a funny line France said about German Reunification here it is- "No you misunderstand us we don't hate Germany we love them SO much we think there should be TWO of them (East/West Germany).
I wanted to bring a great hero in perspective who died in Iwo Jima. His name was John Bastillone. He recieved a medal of honor for his excellent work in Guada Canal, the Marines requested he become an NCO to promote war bonds and promote donating to the war effort, he then went to train many soldiers at a base in california, then went back into service, and Died on Iwo Jima. He had a choice, but he went back to war, He is a hero, adn to this day, there is a Bastillone Parade at his home in NJ
@dore0214 Bastillone, Basilone. And He did fight in the battle of guadalcanal, thats he received the medal of honor, he died on Iwo Jima. :) I feel very sorry for the wife he left behind, he was surely a great hero, aswell as all Allied forces.
Talk about a selfless guy - he was a national celebrity after Guadalcanal, and could have stayed at home selling war bonds. Instead he volunteered to go back to the front. Quite a story. Have you seen The Pacific series on HBO?
God bless all the American heroes that gave their lives on this island - and all the other islands in the Pacific - to defeat a tyrannical, fascist enemy in order to secure a brighter future for millions of people around the world.
Of course I have thought about it. No country is perfect, and US involvement in WW2 had some unintended consequences. But I will tell you this - the world DID get brighter, because the largest slaughter in the history of mankind was put to an end. Jews were no longer exterminated on an industrial scale, European and Asian civilians were no longer subject to slaughter by the millions, and the former Axis powers of Japan and Germany became free and prosperous. The good outweighed the bad.
Yeah but also volcano eruptions to meteor impacts and even more crazy, robot invasions come to talk. And after that it's only Air Crash Investigation for the 1.000.000 time that week...They rarely show something interesting...
@Kinneballer36 yeah n ther facts make no sense they said r new nukes r 100x's more powerful then the ones we droped in ww2 n will level evrythng 4a 4 mile radious yet im watching a program on the nukes we droped on japan n it said it levld evrythng 4a 5 mile radius HOW R THE NEW BOMBS 10FOLD STRNGER YET willLEVEL EVRYTHNg A MILE SHORTER THEN THE OLDEN DAY A BOMBs makes no sense i thnk natgeo dnt wana freak people out tht the east coast will be vaporized if we nuke a ufo ovr the white house
This makes me extremely proud to own an M1 rifle. Just to think that my rifle may have been on this island, its amazing! I also got an idea of how it could've gotten so beat up now......
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
you know that brutal murder video "3 guys 1 hammer"?Well we should have done that to all of the jap POWS.even run into some homes and round up innocent families and go Hitler on their asses. im glad we declared war on the japs and im glad a bunch on innocent ones died. *
@pwnrzero The japanease soldiers were lied to.....they were told if captured that the allied forces would beat, torture, and kill them, also the japanease believed strongly in fighting until you die.
even if that is true, tough love. that's war. when a nation's existence is threatened, it must be willing to use any tactics or strategies at its disposal in order to survive, otherwise it will perish, alongside its people.
You have to understand that the Japanese had many advantages. They were not out in the open, like most of the U.S. soldiers, and virtually invisible from the air. The island was well fortified. If the Japanese were to attack California or an American area, while we were ready, I'm sure the casualties would not be lopsided as well.
So the US kills the Japanese at a rate of 3:1 and you commend the Japanese?
Yes the US had "overwhelming odds" by design. You need to outnumber deeply entrenched defenders to succeed in amphibious operations.
The Japanese were charged with a suicide mission and willingly (stupidly) went along with it.
It was clear at this stage that Japan was going to lose the war but the Japanese leadership persisted in sacrificing lives needlessly. And the Japanese people went along out of ignorance.
Annihilating the Japanese at a 3:1 ratio despite the Japanese defender's extensive fortifications is a "crushing defeat" by almost any standard.
I suppose the implication of your comments on WWII Japan is that individual Japanese were incapable of rational thought and self preservation.
surrender was a option...thousands of japanese had surrendered to the Russians after the Japanese defeat at Khalkhin Gol in '39. Be sure to check *your* facts before you advise others to do so.
@pwnrzero who cares? they weren't resisting anything they attacked we answered, we both had our turns defending soil, but resistance? no they just got what they started
@pwnrzero thats not an arguement thats a fact, yea they did good defending but they didnt really have a choice now did they? it was an island with a front line on all sides
Quote is by Lieutenant General Tadamichi Kuribayashi
Also: Of the more than 18,000 Japanese soldiers present at the beginning of the battle, only 216 were taken prisoner. The rest were KIA or MIA.
The Japanese ran out of resources to back up the defense of Iwo Jima:
"It was a most depressing thought that we had no available means left for the exploitation of the strategical opportunities which might from time to time occur in the course of these operations." -Jap. Commanders-

@pwnrzero i agree with you here, but the soldiers were not given a choice, they were not leaving the island they had no way out, they had to defend or die, even if they had retreited they would be put to death by their superiors. so it came down to dying for your country or dying for being a coward. both sides were brave, who was right and who was wrong is not only decided by the victor, but by who stikes first.
@TeKnO2BaEr yeah? well you cant refute facts..the japs and the nazi's were awful govnt's..no denying in that...they started this massacre war and they got what they deserved...
@TeKnO2BaEr Yes, it is true..if nazi germany won the story would be that the jews in on a conspiracy to take over or something...or that communism was spreading or some shit
Thank u history channel for teaching me more about this then school did

As a proud American, I must apologize to the Japanese nation! The reason that the country of Japan (which was neutral throughout most of the great war) became involved, is that America ruthlessly & inconsiderately took their entire oil supply from them. The Japanese fought valiantly, with their incredibly small number of soldiers. They embodied the meaning of warrior in regards to the world stage. If they had near the amount of soldiers as the allies, than world history would be QUITE different!
glassjaw890 7 months ago
@glassjaw890 The Japanese were on the Allied side during WW1, they had actually benefited during that time by goods. They took their oil supply because they were engaged in a brutal war with China, Nanjing anyone? And as for the meaning of the "warrior", Nanjing again and many pacific islanders and Filipinos would say otherwise.
romanlegions 7 months ago
@glassjaw890 WOW!! Are you really kidding?!? If not, you have revised history to a point of being an enormous lie. "As a proud American"...as a proud American we DON"T need to apologize. There is so much wrong here it is incredible.
Toddinfantry 7 months ago
@Toddinfantry Try explaining that to the Japanese soldiers that I work physical therapy on. Yes, there was a conflict of interest in regards to national ambitions, but we only got involved when the prospect of energy sources came about. To everybody that will read this,
glassjaw890 5 months ago
@glassjaw890 What??!!?? So you give phys therapy to old Japanese soldiers huh? Actually, that has no bearing on your posts. Your posts are wrong. Your ideals are wrong, and you call yourself a proud American. You are so full of BS it verges on pathetic. Your knowledge of history and your interpretation of it is horrendous. Apologize for what...fool. You sound like our President...apologizing for our country. Go away!
Toddinfantry 5 months ago
@Toddinfantry Yeah, I check out your channel. It's hilarious how you think you're some war hero, on par with the WW2 vets, just because you were part of Iraqi Freedom or Kuwait. Just because you fired a few rounds at a villager thousands of meters away and missed doesn't make you shit, cocksucker. If you had died during that self interested military action that the Herbert took, than America would now be a greater place because we would have one less cretin among our populous. ROT IN HELL!
glassjaw890 4 months ago
@glassjaw890 Well this just shows your complete ignorance and creative ability to make s**t up. At NO time have I EVER claimed to be a war hero, nor have I ever considered myself on par with WW2 vets. You seem to think you can just create things out of thin air. Never served in the sandbox but did my time in Beirut. And what are you? Other than real good at personal attacks and cussing...not much. What have you done? Ever served? You make me laugh, criticism with no action.
Toddinfantry 4 months ago
Respond to this video... America only became involved in World War II because of vested interests in energy sources. Our country is privileged and lucky to have been the deciding factor in winning the war, but it wasn't out of goodwill as the movies would have you believe, it was a carefully plotted political strategy by FDR
glassjaw890 5 months ago
@glassjaw890 "energy sources" WTF are you talking about? You are an ignorant buffon if this is your belief system. "Deciding factor" are you for real? Try just one GD ounce of research and learning because you are so far off base here as to make you sound a little looney.
Toddinfantry 5 months ago
@Toddinfantry By "energy sources" I mean oil, you ignorant piece of shit. You were born into a Philistine, blue collar family and had no chance or desire to develop your intellect to think beyond what Fox news tells you. When you're done screaming your voice hoarse at your local tea party meeting, and pleasuring yourself to the sound of Rush Limbaugh's voice, than come try to argue history with me, you fucking retard. By the way, it's spelled BUFFOON.
glassjaw890 4 months ago
@glassjaw890 And there we have it Ladies and Gentlemen...the true glassjaw comes out. A rampant liberal who calls himself a "patriotic American" while a continuing to argue anti-American beliefs. You are quite typical of a liberal, all yelling and cussing when confronted, attacking ppl and not facts. Very typical. By the way, I am not at all what you think so you are, again, wrong. But if you wish to continue my entertainment with your grade school antics, please, by all means continue.
Toddinfantry 4 months ago
Anti-American beliefs?Based on what? Your personal preference to carry out war, regardless of any tax that war may take on any human life or liberty, as it relates to true government? What does liberal or conservative have to do with anything? You speak like a person that has fallen into typical American political conditioning. You're taking sides, when the focal point of American efforts should focus on the protection and global cultivation of any and all life, regardless of political platform
glassjaw890 3 months ago
@glassjaw890 No...based on your posts. You should go back and reread your own posts and that is why you are deemed anti-American. You apologize to Japan?? and continue to denegrate all this country has done. Sure, the country has made mistakes, but look at your post from one month ago, is that really how you think? The side I take is for the ppl of the United States...plain and simple. "Global cultivation of any and all life"....BAH. What kind of crap is that?
Toddinfantry 3 months ago
@Toddinfantry You are the EXACT reason why our nation will undergo yet another civil war. I guarantee it! Americans no longer see each other as brothers. Instead they see each other as opposing political sides. Don't you see that this has been devised by people in the position of higher authority? Create a squabble amongst the supposed free, while the rich pocket the money from the carnage that shall ensue. You can hurl whatever insults you want at me, and though I may despise them, I fully
glassjaw890 3 months ago

StonewallJackson26 6 months ago
@glassjaw890 When Pearl Harbor happened Japan was at war for more than 30 years with MILLIONS and MILLIONS of soldiers invading and occupying mainland Asia killing hundreds of thousands and millions of Chinese and Koreans and everyone else while torturing and raping them, forcing incest on them and doing human experiments all in the cruelest of ways, worse than the Nazis. The U.S. stopped trading oil for this reason. Learn your history WE APOLOGIZE FOR NOTHING! They apologize for everything.

@joeyhol75 I have no idea what you're trying to get at? I never said the Japanese were morally right. In MY worthless opinion, replying to YOUR worthless opinion, the Japanese were never right. @MaddenitesUNITE And? Atleast they had the balls to continue fighting, Ask me that's extreme patriotism to not allow yourself to be taken Prisoner and fight to the death. the biggest mystery of iwo jima is that americans actually won the japanese
mikkeelli 9 months ago
By this time, the Japanese had abandoned banzai charges in favor of well dug in, mutually supportive defensive positions. They were matchless at this kind of defensive fighting. The battleships' 16 inch shells were ineffective. Couple this with the Japanese Army's "fight to the last man" policy, and the result was that our troops had to smoke them out of their caves one by one with grenades, flamethrowers, and bulldozers. Only half the Marines who raised the flag on Mt. Suribachi survived.

@guarnere59 U.S. Marines are called Marines, not soldiers. Soldiers are from the Army. Why is every History channel Documentary about WW2 based on Americans ? Europeans get only brief mentions.Soviets are dismissed with a few sentences.
Most importantly,What about the war in Asia and Africa ?The French army at that time was 70% non-white,the British army 65% non-white,Yanks-10%-odd-Then why are all the guys in these videos square-jawed blue-eyed Aryans?According to HC,there was nothing called ANZAC,the Japanese land armies all got lost in the jungles and Allies obeyed Geneva law
redtihor1 1 year ago
@redtihor1 Hmm. I see your point but the History Channel is an American network. A British network will show British history and so on....And as for the second point I see what you're saying. I wasn't aware the ethnic makeup was so non white but perhaps you're right about that. I know that lots of Native Americans fought for us. Do you think there was an agenda to who was to be filmed? The vast majority of Americans back then were white and I saw a couple blacks in other films in the pacific.
jbjindra 1 year ago
@jbjindra After the fall of France,CDG's free French armies were largely recruited from among North African Muslims. And Britain largely relied upon it's colonies for soldiers. It does make military sense-If you've got colonies with populations ten-twenty times that of yours,it makes sense to use them...
Unfortunately,in those days, reports of Jats and Berbers kicking Nazi ass didn't make for good p.r. in Europe and the US.The Paris victory parade was actually planned days in advance !!

The good outweighed the bad.

strength of allied troops in battle of Iwo Jima: 110,000.
Japanese: 22,786
casualties:
american: 6821 dead, 18,500 wounded
japanese: 21,570 dead, 216 surrender.
i'm not Japanese or anything, but you have to give the Japanese credit for being able to put up a fight against such overwhelming odds.
i mean, they were outnumbered, out-gunned, and out-supplied. it seemed like a one-sided battle.
in the end, "war does not determine who is right, only who is left". he who wins decides who is right.

pwnrzero 1 year ago
You have to understand that the Japanese had many advantages. They were not out in the open, like most of the U.S. soldiers, and virtually invisible from the air. The island was well fortified. If the Japanese were to attack California or an American area, while we were ready, I'm sure the casualties would not be lopsided as well.

yes. thank you for coming to the same conclusion i did. i just didnt have enough space in my original comment to type that.
but still. you have to agree. the japanese did make use of their terrain effectively.
pwnrzero 1 year ago
So the US kills the Japanese at a rate of 3:1 and you commend the Japanese?
Yes the US had "overwhelming odds" by design. You need to outnumber deeply entrenched defenders to succeed in amphibious operations.
The Japanese were charged with a suicide mission and willingly (stupidly) went along with it.
It was clear at this stage that Japan was going to lose the war but the Japanese leadership persisted in sacrificing lives needlessly. And the Japanese people went along out of ignorance.
dmcfarli 1 year ago
@dmcfarli
*coughs*
aparently you should go brush up on your history.
The Japan of World War 2 was completely different from the Japan of today.
It was a society driven by honor and what traditional customs.
Surrender for the Japanese wasn't an option.
To give up a part of the home islands was worse to many Japanese than death.
Oh, and if the U.S. had overwhelming numbers, shouldn't this battle have been a crushing defeat, with relatively few U.S. casualties?
pwnrzero 1 year ago
@pwnrzero

"We shall defend this island with all our strength to the end.
We shall fling ourselves against the enemy tanks clutching explosives to destroy them.
We shall slaughter the enemy, dashing in among them to kill them.

We shall not die until we have killed ten of the enemy.
We shall continue to harass the enemy with guerrilla tactics even if only one of us remains alive."
