I suppose I should go back and look harder at Updike, but I unabashedly admit that I have enjoyed McEwan much more than this man here called the greatest writer of the last half of the past century. I would like to hear more of McEwan!
I do admire Updike's essays and novels. But McEwan is over-rating Updike. As Harold Bloom once said, Updike is a "major stylist and a minor writer." I agree. If you are white and middle class, you will share McEwan's views. Philip Roth is the greatest living American writer.
@CastleRockFan Glad you agree with me about Philip Roth over Updike ! As you may already know, Roth doesn't really care for prizes. If he does win the Nobel Prize, and he MUST, then he will claim that it is the child in him that takes a lot of joy in it. Roth the novelist will get back to writing.
I wonder why I keep coming back to your page, such a nice channel!

No such thing in "greatest" . . . just different.
Opinions - even from "academic experts" - are entirely subjective.

Roth is great - Updike sublime. Ian McEwan is right - he was the greatest writing in English at the time of his death.

Serious writer.... popular writer. Serious critic ....popular critic. MacEwan is all. I would like to read him more before I seek for Updike.

@ZachClooney Philip Roth, in my opinion, deserves the Nobel. He needs it. And by God, if he does not get it, I will go to Sweden and--
