I'm interested in how much of the weight did you have to shave off for the speaker? I have 2 PROTO 2000 GP38-2's CSX that I really like. I'm changed some running gear, but would like sound. Was it difficult? do you have a vid on that? (Sorry for so many questions)
The Athearn units stuffed the weights in the area where the dynamic brakes would be. I had to take all that out as well as remove the plastic in that area to make room for the decoder. The non-DB piece was trimmed back to just what would fill in the hood space. The area under the fans was used for the speaker.
The P2K will be a bit more of a project. I did one of those and ended up having to take the unit apart, down to the frame, and cut away enough metal to provide space.
I used a standard "medium oval" speaker. I think the dimensions are nominally 3/4" x 1". The speakers do have an enclosure. I mounted them in the rear of the unit; the sound comes out through the space between the truck and the frame.
Just bought the Tsunami 645 non- turbo decoder, and had to check this video out.I like what I hear!!!Mine is going into a CPRail GP38-2 Bluebox, that has been remotored, and nickle silver wheels added. Not much room inside, so Ill have to use the smaller Soundtraxx oval speaker. Thanks for a look at your video!!!!!
I would agree, and in particular with turbo units. The point of trying this was to mimic older, non-turbo units that may have had power assemblies changed out, or are just not up to snuff. The difference in sound between a non-turbo 567 and 645 is not that much either, even on the prototype, so it seemed to make sense to try it.
I thought of doing something like you did with the two diff decoders here, but then I realised, the real locomotives will tend to be in sync since the MU control is all instant drive by wire. This often sounds like they are in stereo. I have a few of these that are Turbo 645s and running 2 or 3 together sounds just like the real thing, only smaller!
Thats a great idea! I gota say, im well impressed with Soundtraxx, just got my first one although its a 645T for a 40-2. Its certainly the best sound decoder out there.

A treat for not only the ears, but also the eyes. Your locos are both really detailed!

These are Tsunamis. One is the non-turb 567, the other a non-turbo 645 series.

ah ok, that would explain the more prototypical sounds, thanx!
