  • @nariasan he must be flying first class they have different worthy limits than economy

  • Lol 195 really I'm less than half that!

  • It is the unfortunate fact that if you come up with every possible safety implementation an airplane would never get off the ground, be too expensive to make and too expensive to be a passanger. If you are embarased about your weight don't be selfish and either get over it for the safety of all other passangers or dont fly.The FAA can recommend and issue airworthyness directives but legally can not enforce them. Hopefully the industry will take the initiative. By the way I'm skinny (LOL)

  • I am sick of this whole weight and balance calculation issue. How incredibly simple would it be for aircraft manufacturers to simply install load sensors in the landing gear? No calculations necessary. No embarrassing weigh-ins for passengers. Measurements, not predictions! I asked why that wasn't done when I went to part 121 dispatch school in 1991 and no one knew. I saw all the room for error when I worked as a dispatcher and did 727-200 & 737-400 w & b calcs myself. COME ON aviation industry!

  • As subcontracting continues to grow as a way of reducing costs, people's lives are at greater risk. And when we thought we have seen everythig, new mistakes and overlooks will be taking place.

  • That said, I wouldn't be caught dead on an American airline. Their safety standards are complete bollocks. Even the ones in the USA that are members of the Star Alliance are not as good as the other Star Alliance carriers. I will stick with Lufthansa.

  • @Nariasan Hey what about Air Canada, are safety is impressive and its fleet age is only 8.96 years old!!! We are also one of the FOUNDING members of the Star Alliance!!!

  • Did anyone see the weight of that bag they weighed??? It was 36 kg!! That's NOT ALLOWED on ANY flight aside from cargo aircrafts! The maximum weight per checked luggage can, NOWHERE IN THE WORLD exceed 32 kg!! Even if the passengers pay extra, 32 kg is the maximum as dictated by IATA. Why in the world would a bag of 36 kg then be on board? Which check-in agent was moronic enough to let that pass?! Most airlines nowadays only allow 23 kg anyways...

  • "What about the other steps?"

"Uh, yeah. Don't worry about those."

  • Captain Leslie deserves a posthumous award for her actions

A true hero she is :(

  • 1:10 the tape is rolling backwards as you can see with the background smoke. This kids, is how you use the same footage in two different places differently and effectively. Probably done in post when they knew they needed 'just a little bit more' footage to tie the audio with.

  • um, srry to say, but how the pilot "flew" the plane away from the hanger in a last ditch effort to save lives on the ground doesnt sound convincing to me. i think that she was fighting to get the plane into the air and the plane just happened to barely miss the hanger when it crashed. i think that the investigators and this show just tried to make it seem like she was a hero to make us feel better about the tragic deaths that day

  • i don't understand american accents i do understand a little bit but some words are crappy and i dont have a brtish accent

  • One of the main factors in this crash was the failure of oversight of maintenance by the main airline which is US Air. When I buy a US Air ticket, I should fly on an airplane owned and operated by US Air, not Air Midwest. Air Midwest should have mechanics employed by their airline, not "Air Mechanics R US." If mechanics had been properly supervised, this accident would not have happened.

  • just to sad to see that crashes have to happen before something is done adequately to prevent such things like overloading and correct maintanence, especialy when lifes depends on it

  • It's totally possible to install load cell's on the undercariage to indicate real time aircraft weight & show CG location.

  • the first thing i said when this started was the CG was too far aft, no matter wether the elevator had full motion that planes would have stalled anyway, while the elevator was not full of motion it was NOT a contributing factor to the fatal crash the weight was the first factor

  • well thats sad

  • Bustafunny should try a high banking roll in a dead weighted small plane that has no vertical velocity due to engines not large enough to make the super-heavy fuselage 'a rocket' then to get speed to then find recovery. This Katie did ALL POSSIBLE with what she had, a small cargo-overloaded and fat american overloaded full-fuel-tanks plane. RIP to them, and tremendous tremendous cheers for Linda Ward and her co-workers. Thanks for showing us these heroes, Aircrashmayday!!!

  • Guys, Stop shanghai'ing the comments with your rather sad banter and how fat Americans are / what Katie could have done to prevent the crash, desisions like that at low altitude are hard to make, with reduced contol I doubt anyone here could have recovered the aircraft. People died at the end of the day, and less people will die as a result, a positive coming out of a negative.

  • Other unknowns: 1.) power loss/irregularity on one/both engines; 2.) other cable mal-adjustments, aelerons, throttle etc. (if cable); 3.) Weight distribution patterns of cargo (they said "hard to close hatch door" (why?) - LINDA WARD IS OUTSTANDING!!!!!!!!!!! I hope she won something for this and is continuing to Take on the Bosses of the aviation safety. The flight companies apology?: Garbage. *It would have been in the media 'no apology', so PR mode

  • Thanks for posting this. Some of the comments I've seen are beyond belief. Nice to see a few thought-provoking comments, esp. Bustafunny's comment re: crew experience and resource management.

  • Two factors not discussed:

    1. Crew experience. This crew apparently didn't use upset recovery procedures. They could have lowered the nose by rolling to a high bank angle, then recovering to level flight. Also, anytime a configuration change (gear up) coincides with abrubt controllability problems, the crew should immediately restore to last fylaybe configuration (gear down, in this case).

    2. Crew Resource Management. Always talk to all crew, including the loaders to discover anything unusual.

  • A sensible comment! Point on "restore to last flyable configuration" a very good one, and one a more experienced crew may have tried.

  • Just see:When the GC is out of its range (behind in this case) the physics does not allow controlled flights, only scream for the passenger to unfast their belts to run in a hurry to the front of the cabin, but passengers are able nor trained to do this. And... besides it, as the real weight were out of the envelope, it would not work out too. The loader warned the crew... unproper checking... unproper procedure... I agree.., but - controlled flight : - just physically unable. RIP all of them.

  • they were at 300 meters there was not enough room, when you use high bank angels the plane would have hit the ground anyway, but the gear option you state is the first thing they should have done, i guess the extreme pitch up occupied them completely, gear down would have also caused drag on the bottom of the aircraft maybe helping the nose down also.

  • IMagine you are piloting the plane and suddenly it spins out of control and you realise you are about to die. You have no idea what is hapening or why. I bet land gear will be the last thing you (and anyone else) will think of in such situation.

  • Forbid fat people to fly!!... Damn!! why you American have to eat too much?? One American is eating equalvilent of Ten Africans!!

  • Comment removed

  • that was mean.. but funny though.. and true..!

  • fat people need to fly also

  • Um thats the wrong way to argue about this topic, if fat people are rich and pay for 2 or 3 seats and you are told, "Oh you cant fly a lard ass is taking up the only seat left on the plane" I bet you will chnage your mind

  • You misunderstand me...I'm saying NOBODY, simply nobody absolutely HAS to fly...it's not a god-given necessity...just another petty luxury...the whole world made out just fine before mass air-transit, and could easily do so again if it ceased.

I'm not sure from your comments, if you're attacking or defending lardarses but that's a separate issue...I suggest you take it up with someone who gives a toss...

  • you do realize that driving from say Los Angeles to New York would be more expensive to do on a car than by airplane. Unless you plan to never sleep and only eat potato chips along the way. Either way it would still be expensive. Flying is not a luxury but just another form of transportation. When using your logic, you could say cars are a luxury and nobody NEEDS to use them, because nobody really does. That is why humans have feet.

  • You're quite right, that IS the logic I'm following.

Why on earth SHOULD anyone absolutely HAVE to travel from LA to NY? It ISN'T really necessary in the strictest sense.

Not that far back almost everyone lived within walking or riding distance of all their daily activities anyway. As it happens I for one still do - by both design and belief.

I'm not proposing a return to a medieval agrarian society, but nor, if we don't buck up, am I taking bets against nature forcing that on us anyway...

  • @marick626 you can sleep in your car

  • @mkuki2000 and that's eating ten african *people*, not just the consumption of an african person

  • Carry on would average about 10 lbs...

That still leaves the average hamburger eater weighing 185!!!

  • Average weight of an American is 195 lbs!!!!???

    Damn!!!!!!!!

  • That weight includes carryon bags, coats, and other items that passengers bring onboard with them.
