I read that he lost well over half of his full potential when Obi-Wan beat him because it's impossible to channel the Force through machinery, and he's more machine than man.

If it's such a basic Force skill, Vader probably told him that Sidious could, and had him work it out as training. Just because a master can't do something doesn't mean a student can't. Everybody's different. Lumiya actually says at one point that Vader can't use Force lightning because he is more machine than man. Her reasoning is that to channel the Force through something, it has to be organic (which isn't to be confused with using the Force to flip a switch or something like it).
