Though I could not understand the lyrics but could definitely understand the Words "Nammo Nammo Matha". Friend I got goose bums hearing the Anthem. Hail Sri Lanka and the Composer. I have Become a Fan of the Lovely Music and Wonderful Anthem.

Thou gavest us Knowledge and Truth, Thou art our strength and inward faith, Our light divine and sentient being, Breath of life and liberation. Grant us, bondage free, inspiration. Inspire us for ever. In wisdom and strength renewed, Ill-will, hatred, strife all ended, In love enfolded, a mighty nation Marching onward, all as one, Lead us, Mother, to fullest freedom.
Awasome...Excellent melody and lyrics...a complete "GOOD" song for your nation...I frequently listen this song(ofcourse I stand up whn listening)...I like the part.."sundara siri barini"...:-)
"Past is HISTORY, FUTURE is a MYSTRY present is what we have and what we can do something"....so Guys lets stop this ethnic crap and think as Sri Lankans first and move forward thats the best we can do.
This is how countries like India, Malaysia and Singapore developed well by thinking as a nationality than a ethnicity.
I am happy that what is happening in Sri Lanka is coming to an end. It will be so nice when the Sinhalese, Tamils and Muslims can live together in peace without any problems from neither the LTTE or the Sri Lankan army. I wish that the perpitrators and the people who started that war to begin with be punished. I wish that all Sri Lankan have their rights in their own country. Long live peace!
Yes, Tamil can learn and sing the national anthem in Sinhalese. But also at the same time, it would be fair if Sinhalese can learn and sing it it in Tamil. I was happy when a few years ago, one Sinhalese friend of mine sang the national anthem in Tamil. I was impressed! Her voice sounded so pleasant in Tamil.
Sri Lanka - currently the worst Human Rights Violator in the World - Human Rights Watch Report that Sri Lanka is the worst country in the world Human Right Violation such "Disappearance" and "abductions" of Innocent Tamil Civilians . Such activities are sponsored by the genocidal government of Sri Lanka. ...
In Canada, the English speakers sing the Canadian national anthem in English and the French speakers sing it in French. Along with it, there are translation in several aboriginal languages.
So why not let the Tamil version of Sri Lanka Matha be sung alongside the original Sinhala version. Meaning, the Sinhalese can sing it in Sinhala and the Tamil s can sing it in Tamil. I think that makes sense and it is fair. Anyone with me on this? :))
Can you come up with some more reliable examples except Canada which doesn't have a history (England, Spain ...... ).
Even I like to have a tamil version of Sri Lanka matha and there is a TAMIL VERSION. (without arguing whether its fair or not to ask for a tamil version). But Tamils should learn to sing the original Sinhalese version of the national anthem as one should know its original form. In India (64 different groups) all sing one anthem.
Yes of course ,National anthem in india has eacho nes culture imbibed the song understand it else no bengali or tamilian will ever sing it and each have their own version of patriotic song which is sung in songs even today before the national anthem is sung.
i think it would be better if theres a tamil version and tamils can sing it in North and East. but in Sinhala version should be used in the South. thats fair for everyone innit?
great. but im saying that there are many examples where one country DOESNT have just one anthem. and why should the history of a country matter with regards to which lang the anthem is sung in? Also no, ilovesImusic said that if tamil was MAJORITY, national anthem would be in tamil. india's anthem is in heavily sanskritized bengali but the majority there ISNT bengali?
hey man even if I was a tamil and I would love the sinhalese version. You see sinhalese music is good even though in other things they have failed dseemingly according to statistics.
thats because the guy who created the indian national anthem was a bengali and created it at the the time when bangladesh was part of india. bangladesh had to create another anthem because of that
Respect to Sri Lanka from Romania! One of our authors, Geo Bogza, once called Sri Lanka "the silver tear that rolled on Old Asia's cheek and into the Indian Ocean".
Its not in Tamil Because the majority living in sri Lanka is Singhalies and thats the mail language speking in sri lanka but you can translate the same national anthom in to Tamil but this is the only one National anthem in Sri Lanka for ever
..singalese supremisist much? sri lanka is both singalese AND tamil. while singalese may be the language most spoken, tamil is the other official language. my parents have the lyrics to the tamil anthem, i just asked because ive never heard it sung on youtube.
Singhala is the official Language as I said singhala is the majority,.... ofcourse not only Tamils live in sri lanka also Muslim and burger they all can live under one pride, one flage, as a one country......
Kitsunepaws, It would be great if you can find the tamil version of the Sri Lanka national anthem and put it on youtube for everyone to enjoy and learn.
I am not sure if there are many (if any) countries that sings their national anthem in a language other than the national language. Example, India has their national anthem in Hindi, and even though they have god knows how many languages there, they all sing it in hindi. Even in Tamilnadu...
Yes there is a tamil version but One country should have only one national anthem. If Tamil was the majority, the national anthem would be the tamil version. Best example is India. There they have more 100 groups but the song is in "bengali". They do not have 100 versions of the national anthem.
Although its in sinhalese, we never mention about Sinhalese or Buddhism. The idea is important not the version.
one country should have one national anthem, you're kidding right? i live in canada and while english is the 'majority', the national anthem - whenever and wherever its sung - is always sung in BOTH french AND english. plus you said the lang of the national anthem is in the lang of the country's majority? bengali is definitly not the majority/official lang in india.
You took Canada then what about USA which has about 20% Hispanics ... Canada is no ones country. Canada doesn't have a long history like Sri Lanka/India. But Sri Lanka is totally different. Did I say Bengali is the majority? I said One country should have One anthem. So you wanna have it in tamil? never ever.
Let's leave age of fighting in the past. If someone feels like letting out the steam, let them. We are above that rukshan.
Like I said, we all made some mistakes, but if we dwell in those mistakes, we'll never move beyond. There will be people who will try to trip us on our way to peace and unity, the best thing is to ignore them. what some people want is to show up the Sinhalese as racist - dont fall for that. race, religion no matter what we are SRI LANKAN
Canada still has some tie with the UK haven't they? that might explain a duel anthem. However, the important thing is not finger pointing. OUR national anthem is in Sinhalese, and that IS one of the major language in SL. its just the Anthem, the american anthem is in English but hispanics are part of America. There is no reason to get offended. One country, one flag one nation. we accept and love everyone. We have moved beyond our mistakes. Tamils and Sinhalese. lets move forward TOGETHER.
