Reportedly, Thompson and Ginsberg were good buddies during the 60s. but didn't speak to each other from about 1970 to 1990. Ginsberg was said to have committed some horrible drunken offence against Hunter, (Little known fact - Ginsberg was a drunk, and a very mean one) and was so embarrassed that he couldn't talk to Hunter for two decades.

There was some form of detente in their last years.
