@OliverHart13 Yes, and this is a good question indeed. Cyanobacteria comes in many colors and can grow as dusty, slimy, or filamentous as you see here in this video. Control your nutrients, and you shall see this algae disappear in time. Good luck.
@kIoudie They are known to nip at it but for the most part, they would much rather nip at some other forms of food in the tank since Cyano is toxic to most marine life. Good luck and thanks for sharing that.
Thanks for the info now I do have a protein skimmer and my tanks is a twenty seven gallon I know its a little small but I am upgrading to a fifty gallon aquarium.
I thought phosphate was NOT a fuel for cyano as it is a bacteria not algae? My understanding was that oxygen, nutrients, and light were the only requirements for cyano growth???
@drshockalu420 Phosphates is the number one cause of Cyanobacteria. It is a bacteria that feeds off it, as well as light (phosphates is a nutrient). All the information you need is found on this video. Good luck.
Hi, Newyorksteelo i my tank is up and running 2 months old... and i got my first lighting system which are t5 and i had them hooked up for about 5 days and on the second day i was starting to see brown algae, and now on the fifth day i have it covering my rock and my sand and its everywhere. My protein skimmer just broke in today will that help? Can you help me?
@lpunchya The skimmer will help for sure, but you have to control your phosphate levels in the tank. Please watch my 4 part video on "Phosphates Problems & Solutions", as well as my video titled "Green Hair Algae Problems & Solutions" to further find the answers you seek and know how to deal with nuisance algae. Good luck. With a little perseverance and a proper setup, your algae issues will be non existent in the long run.
Hi. i have a 10 gallon saltwater aquarium with about 7 pounds of live rock. 1 damsel and 1 yellow tang. i have some cyno growing but not much. is it okay if i let it grow? i have no coral. because i herd that it dosent herrt the fish? thanks
@crickeristheboy OMG a yellow tang on a 10g tank? This is just trouble waiting to happen. Most tangs require a tank that is 100 gallons or more. Good luck.
Thanks buddy, I think I'm gonna cut down on food and I also tried to put another koralia 1050 powerhead in the tank but with the 1 1050 already in the tank, it just seems to be too much water movement.
@heapppppp Not is you use them with a wavemaker. You may want to look into those so that the flow is not so much in the linear side, but rather random. Good luck.
Newyorksteelo can you please give me some suggestions about how I could take care of the red slime in my 120 gallon reef. I just uploaded a video today. Sorry if the video looks a little fuzzy but I don't have a good camera so I took a vid with my iPhone. Any hints or suggestions will help.
@heapppppp The suggestions I can offer are already discussed and offered here on this very video. I will try my best to take a look at your video later on and leave a comment if need be, but for the mean time. the answers you seek are found here. Good luck.
There is only one animal I can think of that eats cyano, and that is the blue dot sea hare. The down side is that's all it eats. so if there is no cyano it will starve slowly, but if you can lend him out to others with this problem it would be OK. I don't recommend it though.
@poolboy8888 Just in case you did not know, Cyanobateria is toxic as a food source which is why it does not have natural predators. This sea hare eating cyano is most likely a myth.
@newyorksteelo I just did a little more research on youtube and it seems that the sea hare uses it to produce ink. this may not be true but it's worth saying. thanks for the reply!:)
@bobbonecrusher Yes. I mentioned this in the video also. Sometimes it just comes down to changing the bulbs cause old ones shift more to the red side of the spectrum. Good luck and keep up the good work.
@dm002a8686 Most likely going through a mini cycle, and still maturing. Let it mature, and seed it properly with bristle worms, nassarius snails and the such, and stop feeding so much buddy. Good things take a long time to occur in this hobby, yet the bad things can happen in an instance. I hope you Added the new sand bed below without trapping waste beneath it. Good luck and once again, stop the massive feeding. Feed very lightly.
Hello buddy, sorry to bother you at weekend. I have a little bit of red cyano on my mud in refugium, none in display tank,
As you know I have great skimmer and running 2 phosban reactors with chempi pure elite, salifert test kit shows 0ppm,
But no3 is still 20ppm but I do water change every two weeks so refugium and deep sand bed starting to work .what do you think I can do to remove this, I think it could be low spectrum light in refugium.
i figure the best way to deal with cyano if one is to use media is to use small amounts phosguard or such for three days to remove the phosphates. once the phosphate is removed throw out the old phosguard and replace with new and use for another three days to remove silicates. the key is to use small amounts and replace frequently (3 days max or leeching can occur).
@TheReefProject I somewhat agree with you here that the media should be replaced often but changing it every three days might be pushing it a little. I would say replace it non stop every week or two for about a 2 month period, and then the media can be changed out less frequently. The reason for this is cause phosphate media uses GFO (Granulated Ferric Oxide) which cause low PH for the first few days of use. Changing it out too frequently may result in PH swings further affecting the animals.
Hi I'm have a big problem with my tank I have lots of brown/red algae growing everywhere and took over can u help me my email is jay1464@hotmail.co.uk thanks
@1464jayjay Sorry buddy but I do not do emails, otherwise, the emails would never end. All the information on how to deal with this nuisance algae is already in the video. Listen closely and follow the directions. Good luck.
Awesome job! I have a 55 gal. I had it for years now. I started this hobby without having any knowledge. I've been watching some of your videos and they are very helpful. I will post a video of mine so you can tell me how can i improve my tank. Thanks.
thanks for the quick reply, steelo.well,my water parameters are nitrate, nitrite, ammonia and phosphate are 0.thats according to my API test kit,not really sure how accurate they are.i'll heed your advise and get an R/O anf remora skimmer next week.your vids are very informative for a guy like me who is new in the hobby...you just got yourself a new subscriber:) thanks again,Steelo!
yo,steelo love the vids, man.i am having algae probs right now, brown algae and cyano as well but it is not too bad.i tried using phosguard but my bi color blenny and 2 clownfish reacted to it badly.my blenny almost died!so i figured it must be the phosguard,so i took it out after 2 days.im getting my protein skimmer but will an R/O filter work instead of an RO/DI unit?budget is a bit tight, you see:( will you recommend an Aquac remora or a coralife super skimmer?thanks for your input,man...
@1knightstand007 Phosguard should not be blamed for your fish reacting sick. i suspect something seriously wrong with the water quality. An RO filter alone will help immensely, and the skimmer will help even more. If your tank is 40 gallons or less, I recommend the remora hands down. Good luck.
@newyorksteelo actually if too much phosguard is used at once, it can kill the fish, especially in a small tank because it can deplete the oxygen. and just to add, cyano is also caused by excessive silicates as well as phosphates.
@aliencookies It is possible for this to happen mainly because as you stated, it depletes oxygen, but the lack of oxygen is not what would kill the fish. Everything else would most likely go first such as the micro and macro fauna, leaving the fish to be the last to survive on even the littlest of oxygen in the tank. The death will come as a result of large PH swings as a result of lack of proper oxygen. GFO has a tendency to do this but can be corrected with calcium and alkalinity supplements.
Hey steelo I jus randomly got a cyano outbreak n it's horrible Like I'm talkin all over n it's crazy cuz everything was going good my nitrates dropped phosphates undetectable.... I'm like stuck.. I think it might have been on the hiding from wen my nitrates were so high... I'm thinkin of starting over I dunno what to even do
@vipete1985 Listen to the video and follow the directions. Starting over is not going to help you. All the info you need is in the video itself. Good luck.
It would be really useful if you could zoom in on corals etc throughout the videos as you do near the end and also the fish. I only had a tantalising glimpse of what they were doing. Your videos really are a great source of info and are an inspiration to many of us.
@TelevisionMagForum Thanks, On some of the updates on this system, I do plenty of zooming and close ups of the corals. You may want to take a look at the build process of this 0g nano system from week 1.
@Bigrich693 Good luck and be sure to watch my video on :"new and old tank syndrome" just in case this is the reason for your cyano problem. Good luck.
Hello buddy , Some of my chaeto is growing red, do you think that it could be Cyanobacteria growing on chaeto ???, so I have taking it out and rinsed it with fresh salt water and pruned the red slime bits out, and put it back in refugium, looks 100% better now, what do you think buddy, are and my nitrates are in-between 5 and 2 coming down slowly thanks to your advice.
@dm002a8686 Its hard to say without looking at it in person or on a video. If this happens again, try making a video of it so I can take a look. Good luck.
soo my anemone shut down (thought it died) b/c my tank heater turned on and stayed on at 85. i threw it in the fuge and it Started to slowly open up (not dead?).. i just heard you say Iodine dip??? will that help my Anemone?? thanks for the reply.again
@1103jester Nope, an iodine dip is for corals that carry diseases, not a cure for a stressed out anemone. Hopefully your anemone will recover after a while. be sure to check on your tank daily at least twice to prevent these issues. I once had a system crash cause of a defective heater that killed almost everything. Good luck.
@dm002a8686 Ay ya yay, chemipure is a carbon, chemipure elite is also a carbon that contains some GFO to remove phosphates, but is mostly a carbon. You got lots to learn buddy. Take a look at my videos of phosphates problems and solutions. You will see that I use 2 reactors, one with carbon the other with rowaphos. Both are totally different. Chemipure hands down is a carbon source.
@dm002a8686 the cyano is growing cause you do not have enough of the chatomorpha to battle with it and your phosphate levels are up. Let the chaetomorpha grow as much as possible which will take some time. How could you run a marine aquarium without carbon. Just does not make sense. Get your self some chemipure elite and run it where there is high flow in your system. good luck.
Hello buddy , I have some Cyanobacteria growing on mud in refugium, it's not like yours with the long strands , just on the service, should I put carbon bag in my refugium , you said you switched your refugium of, but I can't do that mines in the sump. It's not growing were I had it last time that all clearer, that's in darkness now.
Hello buddy, my lights are 10x15000k not 1500k, do you think 5x15000k is enough to light refugium or could I put all ten lights on , my light have 10 bulbs on my friend, someone made a comment on getting some colour acrylic and stick them on sides of sump to block some of the light out of the other sides of sump, do you think that's a good plan or not.
@dm002a8686 Sorry I meant 15000K. The best bulbs for growing plants in the refugium 6700K. If you can get a hold of black acrylic panels, that would be a good idea to keep the light out of the other stages. Good luck.
When is your next update my friend, I'll try my best to listen carefully , I know you get hundreds of emails every day, we've all got to lisen carefully to make your live easy . Hope you have a happy new year all the best for 2011
Thanks I now understand buddy, sorry for my comments before, I should have just went back to your video, think I pulled out to much of that other algae from my refugium when I got more chaeto, could of helped to corse cyano problem,I change phosphate media tomorrow I have phosban 150 reactor
@dm002a8686 Good. Now you are on the right track and i hope you can understand that i make these videos to make my life easier and to not repeat myself so much. If I were to count the amount of emails i get on cyanobacteria alone, it would be in the hundreds. Please also try to listen closely to the videos as I try to cover as much as i can to make it easier on you the viewer and me as well.
hey im thinking of getting a phosphate reactor. probably the same one in your other video. the phosban 150. and i would like to know what media i should use and how much of it. also if you have any tips... i started the tank on november 5th 2010. it cycled in about a week because i bought fully cured live rock from someone like 15 minutes away so there was really no die-off. im using ro/di water and reef crystal salt and i have alot of hair algae and i just started getting the cyanno.
@reefguy710 The media I use is Rowaphos cause its the best out there but there are other media that are just as good such as phosban media. how much you use of it will be in the directions of the bottle, or you can look up the info online for any particular brand. Foe Rowaphos, I use 250ml for my recommended system. It is normal for your system to go through this process since it is new and full of phosphates. Trust me there was die off in the rock. Get a clean up crew for starters.
@pawslover99 Phosphates will stunt the growth of your corals. You definitely need to look into your phosphate levels or you may even lose some of the frags you own. Good luck.
these vids cam out at the perfict time because im upgrading my 55g to a 90 witha 55g sump tomarrow lol oops i ment for your 90g take down series not the algea vid lol
I talked to Leng Sy through email and he said that with using GFO reactor eventually the cyano will go away or just stay in the sump area. He also said the replace the GFO every 2 weeks to help but keep an eye out about loosing the coralline algae.
@taedom As stated in the video, replacing the phosphate media often is recommended, especially if the system has been neglected for a while. good luck.
There is a very in depth article on cyanobacteria by Simon Grant on the Deltec website. He states that there's no getting rid of cyano its always gonna be there just waiting for the aquarist to slip. Looks like your doing a good job anyway.
@MrBububsnelot Thats exactly what I stated on this video. Cyano is there just waiting for the phosphate levels to rise and for the aquarist to overfeed or slip as you said.
@31668999 Excellent water parameters, proper lighting, and plenty of calcium is all you need for them to flourish. Mine are starting change shape, sort of arching upwards towards the light, whereas before, when i first got them, branches were straight. nature is really truly amazing.
@31668999 Annoying but a definite and sometimes unavoidable part of nature. All we can really do is try to starve it from its food source and hope for the better.
does your water temp have any effect on the spread of cyno bacteria rather colder or warmer then normal. and an off topic question too, what color sand do you have pink or white? thanks
@7051kevin I have not found that water temperature plays a part in the growth of cyano but low levels of PH does encourage cyano growth. My sand is from natures ocean natural white.
@sputnik790 I ordered a new stand which cost me an arm and a leg and I will be replacing the sump with a manufactured sump that rocks. Stay tuned for these videos man. The stand should be here by next week and i will make a video on the new wood stand and why I chose it. thanks for the comment bro.
@benboarder09 Wow, where have you been man lol. Hiding out in the bushes in some military clothing. Was good benboarder09. Good to hear it was succesfull for you and I hope it never came back and did not bring problems to your system however, in my case, I have about a grand in corals on my 30g nano system and I am not about to medicate this system no matter how safe the medication says it is for corals. More than $1,000 bucks in corals, and my solution is to eradicate the cause. Thanks.
@newyorksteelo hey there yeah im hiding in texas till after feb. i have about 400 in my tank when i used it and your skimmer will take it all out over night. my tank was covered in it, the corals were starting to die from it but as soon as it was gon they cam right back in my 30 breeder
@benboarder09 400? Not sure what you mean by 400. The last time i saw your video on your system, you had like 2 corals on there bro. That raises an eyebrow you know :)
thnx for the info steelo this video has encouraged me to keep pushing to start my aquarium, when the video started, i had my 2 month old hollering on my lap, but i think he was dazzled by your beautiful coral and fell right to sleep on the spot and for that i thank you man i guess he will be as passionate as we are for the hobby
hi its rav again. how are you i was asking you about water being cloudy i did water change and added filter sock to overflow outlet and seems to be doing the trick. how often should i change water since the tank is only two months old and please have a look my tank update video that i made yesterday and let me know what you think i did deep sand bed and you are right it helps alot. thank you for your vidoes and information and sharing your knowledge with new commers in this hobby lke me.thanks
@ravi197699 Whats up ravi, I will check out the video when I get home later on tonight cause watching videos on my phone can be problematic. Answering back is alot easier. I would recommend you begin making either 10% water changes weekly, or 20% by weekly. Either way would be good :)
Much support to you newyorksteelo! I've learned a lot from your videos and your enthusiasm really shows how dedicated you are to your systems and helping others enjoy theirs. I have a 90G reef in progress.
Questions: In my refugium I'm growing chaetomorpha and red mangroves. I'm running the refugium bulb for about 14hrs a day, but I am getting a lot of bubble and hair algae growth on the live rubble in the fuge. If I add hermits to the fuge will they eat the chaeto?
@skylardejohn It is absolutely safe to add hermits in your refugium buddy. They will not prey on the chaeto at all, and I have a few in my sump as well. You can also add some snails. If you decide to upload a video showing your mangroves, be sure to let me know so I can take a peep. Thanks for the compliment and for watching.
Very good information my friend, excellent video, keep them coming, I have done lots of your suggestions , ro unit , phosban 150 , refugium changing my light 8 to 12 months, and lots more, cheers for your help.
@dm002a8686 Great to hear that you have followed my recommendations. My main goal is to lead you all in the right direction. Thanks for commenting and watching my video.
mrsaltwater tv talks alot about diping colars in coral Rx.i wonder if it would help in the transfer of this type of alga?i beleive i got the red slime algae from my candy cane coral i bought.i brought it home and within a week i had the Cyanobacteria begain to grow out the bottom of it.
@dougnight44 I saw that video and it is a good tip to do for sure, but I bet even doing this practice, there is some cyano just waiting to sprout out in everyones systems. You can easily introduce cyano into a system by simply dumping frozen food into your tank. Sometimes it is just inevitable, and if cyano cannot grow, blue/green algae and or hair algae will naturally grow in its place and you gonna have to battle that as well. It;s just a part of this hobby and expected especially new systems.
the med help for awhile but came back a few months later.so you are right about finding a long tem solution for the problem.great vid.i do agree with 100% of what you have posted.keep moving forward lol.had to put that in.
Hows it going steelow.Well just wanted to let you know what i do.i have got that red slime before and no i dont have a refugium yet(hope soon) i do us the chemipure elite and it seems to help alot but i did dose the system with red slime remover before and it works very well.elimate all in less then two days.wasnt much in the system.i med did mess with some of my corals though.kena tree closed for the two days and my sponge color change from dark green to neon yellow and back to green in a week.
@dougnight44 Good to hear that the corals recovered. This is the very reason why I do not use medication. Although highly effective at what it does, if it kills cyano, it will surely kill something else lol. Good luck and thanks for providing that info and commenting :)
So my problem with cyano is no skimmer then. Cuz I use RODI and I have a GFO / Carbon Reactor. Hmmm I will have to talk to Leng Sy about this one. I bet he says get a UV.
@taedom lol, so you are also experiencing cyano. Hmm, I say get a skimmer man. Absolutely. A UV will not kill the algae that is adhered to a particular surface, it will only kill free floating algae :)
@jayboogy510 I will discuss bio pellets along with the nitrates problems & solution video so be on the lookout for that upcoming video. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Another great video! I also have cyano in my sump area, not in my main display. I also am running a phospate reactor which has me scratching my head as to why there is cyano? I am thinking that it has a lot to do with the lighting that we use over the refugiums in the sump. We use a much more yellow color light to grow the macro algae thus growing the cyano as well.
@wesleyforbes Even if you have a phosphate reactor with media, do you use ro/di water, are you feeding the dirty water found in frozen cubes, how long is the bulb in the refugium, do you overfeed, is the system overstocked, not enough clean up crew perhaps and there is detritus settling in and causing phosphates, how long has the system been running and how long was it until you decided to get the phospban reactor, all of these come into play as far as phosphates goes.
@newyorksteelo Let's see... yes I use ro/di, I only ocassionaly feed cubes. The light is on a reverse to the main lights and are run for 8 hours. I do not over feed as when I do it is mass hysteria and the food gets devouered in less than a minute! My system as you have already seen is very lightly stocked at the moment and my skimmer is rated for a 150 gallon light stock to 90g heavy stocked. My clean up crew is for a 100g and I have a 90.
@wesleyforbes My system has been running for a while but I have replaced a lot of the rock due to the hair algae bloom I had during the summer. After doing this, there was a short cycle, then the clean up crew got everthing under contol except a few areas of algae. Should I put some critters in the sump?
@wesleyforbes Hair algae bloom, bingo, definitely phosphates int he system for sure buddy. The critters will not consume the cyano but will help keep the detritus in check, so yeah, there should be atleast a brittle starfish down there and a few hermits. They wont prey on the chaeto. I usually run my refugium lights 24 hours a day. How old is the refugium light is another question you should as yourself. I replace mine yearly and need to replace it as a matter of fact.
how does the hang-on refugium work? like how does the water enter into the refugium and then back into the tank? I really like the idea of the hang on refugium!

@bobbonecrusher Yes. I mentioned this in the video also. Sometimes it just comes down to changing the bulbs cause old ones shift more to the red side of the spectrum. Good luck and keep up the good work.

Yeah deep sand bed but only did that on the 8th June
dm002a8686 8 months ago
@dm002a8686 Most likely going through a mini cycle, and still maturing. Let it mature, and seed it properly with bristle worms, nassarius snails and the such, and stop feeding so much buddy. Good things take a long time to occur in this hobby, yet the bad things can happen in an instance. I hope you Added the new sand bed below without trapping waste beneath it. Good luck and once again, stop the massive feeding. Feed very lightly.

Hello buddy, sorry to bother you at weekend. I have a little bit of red cyano on my mud in refugium, none in display tank,
As you know I have great skimmer and running 2 phosban reactors with chempi pure elite, salifert test kit shows 0ppm,
But no3 is still 20ppm but I do water change every two weeks so refugium and deep sand bed starting to work .what do you think I can do to remove this, I think it could be low spectrum light in refugium.
dm002a8686 8 months ago
@dm002a8686 Wow man, you are still battling nitrates? I thought you added a deep sand bed?
newyorksteelo 8 months ago
i figure the best way to deal with cyano if one is to use media is to use small amounts phosguard or such for three days to remove the phosphates. once the phosphate is removed throw out the old phosguard and replace with new and use for another three days to remove silicates. the key is to use small amounts and replace frequently (3 days max or leeching can occur).
TheReefProject 8 months ago
@TheReefProject I somewhat agree with you here that the media should be replaced often but changing it every three days might be pushing it a little. I would say replace it non stop every week or two for about a 2 month period, and then the media can be changed out less frequently. The reason for this is cause phosphate media uses GFO (Granulated Ferric Oxide) which cause low PH for the first few days of use. Changing it out too frequently may result in PH swings further affecting the animals.

thanks for the quick reply, steelo.well,my water parameters are nitrate, nitrite, ammonia and phosphate are 0.thats according to my API test kit,not really sure how accurate they are.i'll heed your advise and get an R/O anf remora skimmer next week.your vids are very informative for a guy like me who is new in the hobby...you just got yourself a new subscriber:) thanks again,Steelo!

@1knightstand007 Your welcome.
newyorksteelo 1 year ago
yo,steelo love the vids, man.i am having algae probs right now, brown algae and cyano as well but it is not too bad.i tried using phosguard but my bi color blenny and 2 clownfish reacted to it badly.my blenny almost died!so i figured it must be the phosguard,so i took it out after 2 days.im getting my protein skimmer but will an R/O filter work instead of an RO/DI unit?budget is a bit tight, you see:( will you recommend an Aquac remora or a coralife super skimmer?thanks for your input,man...
1knightstand007 1 year ago
@1knightstand007 Phosguard should not be blamed for your fish reacting sick. i suspect something seriously wrong with the water quality. An RO filter alone will help immensely, and the skimmer will help even more. If your tank is 40 gallons or less, I recommend the remora hands down. Good luck.
newyorksteelo 1 year ago
@newyorksteelo actually if too much phosguard is used at once, it can kill the fish, especially in a small tank because it can deplete the oxygen. and just to add, cyano is also caused by excessive silicates as well as phosphates.
aliencookies 8 months ago
@aliencookies It is possible for this to happen mainly because as you stated, it depletes oxygen, but the lack of oxygen is not what would kill the fish. Everything else would most likely go first such as the micro and macro fauna, leaving the fish to be the last to survive on even the littlest of oxygen in the tank. The death will come as a result of large PH swings as a result of lack of proper oxygen. GFO has a tendency to do this but can be corrected with calcium and alkalinity supplements.
newyorksteelo 8 months ago
Hey steelo I jus randomly got a cyano outbreak n it's horrible Like I'm talkin all over n it's crazy cuz everything was going good my nitrates dropped phosphates undetectable.... I'm like stuck.. soo my anemone shut down (thought it died) b/c my tank heater turned on and stayed on at 85. i threw it in the fuge and it Started to slowly open up (not dead?).. i just heard you say Iodine dip??? will that help my Anemone?? thanks for the reply.again
1103jester 1 year ago
@1103jester Nope, an iodine dip is for corals that carry diseases, not a cure for a stressed out anemone. Hopefully your anemone will recover after a while. be sure to check on your tank daily at least twice to prevent these issues. I once had a system crash cause of a defective heater that killed almost everything. Good luck.

@dm002a8686 As long as you know the difference between carbon and GFO (Granular Ferric Oxide), you will be straight.
newyorksteelo 1 year ago
chemipure is for phosphates, I use Rowa phos
dm002a8686 1 year ago
@dm002a8686 Ay ya yay, chemipure is a carbon, chemipure elite is also a carbon that contains some GFO to remove phosphates, but is mostly a carbon. You got lots to learn buddy. Take a look at my videos of phosphates problems and solutions. You will see that I use 2 reactors, one with carbon the other with rowaphos. Both are totally different. Chemipure hands down is a carbon source.
newyorksteelo 1 year ago
Never used carbon before , do you have any videos on that, can't remember see any.
dm002a8686 1 year ago
@dm002a8686 the cyano is growing cause you do not have enough of the chatomorpha to battle with it and your phosphate levels are up. Let the chaetomorpha grow as much as possible which will take some time. How could you run a marine aquarium without carbon. Just does not make sense. Get your self some chemipure elite and run it where there is high flow in your system. good luck.
newyorksteelo 1 year ago
Hello buddy , I have some Cyanobacteria growing on mud in refugium, it's not like yours with the long strands , just on the service, should I put carbon bag in my refugium , you said you switched your refugium of, but I can't do that mines in the sump. It's not growing were I had it last time that all clearer, that's in darkness now.
dm002a8686 1 year ago
Hello buddy, my lights are 10x15000k not 1500k, do you think 5x15000k is enough to light refugium or could I put all ten lights on , my light have 10 bulbs on my friend, someone made a comment on getting some colour acrylic and stick them on sides of sump to block some of the light out of the other sides of sump, do you think that's a good plan or not.
dm002a8686 1 year ago
@dm002a8686 Sorry I meant 15000K. The best bulbs for growing plants in the refugium 6700K. If you can get a hold of black acrylic panels, that would be a good idea to keep the light out of the other stages. Good luck.

newyorksteelo 1 year ago
hey im thinking of getting a phosphate reactor. probably the same one in your other video. the phosban 150. and i would like to know what media i should use and how much of it. also if you have any tips... i started the tank on november 5th 2010. it cycled in about a week because i bought fully cured live rock from someone like 15 minutes away so there was really no die-off. im using ro/di water and reef crystal salt and i have alot of hair algae and i just started getting the cyanno.
reefguy710 1 year ago
@reefguy710 The media I use is Rowaphos cause its the best out there but there are other media that are just as good such as phosban media. how much you use of it will be in the directions of the bottle, or you can look up the info online for any particular brand. Foe Rowaphos, I use 250ml for my recommended system. It is normal for your system to go through this process since it is new and full of phosphates. Trust me there was die off in the rock. Get a clean up crew for starters.

taedom 1 year ago
@taedom As stated in the video, replacing the phosphate media often is recommended, especially if the system has been neglected for a while. good luck.
newyorksteelo 1 year ago
There is a very in depth article on cyanobacteria by Simon Grant on the Deltec website. He states that there's no getting rid of cyano its always gonna be there just waiting for the aquarist to slip. Looks like your doing a good job anyway.
MrBububsnelot 1 year ago
@MrBububsnelot Thats exactly what I stated on this video. Cyano is there just waiting for the phosphate levels to rise and for the aquarist to overfeed or slip as you said.

@7051kevin I have not found that water temperature plays a part in the growth of cyano but low levels of PH does encourage cyano growth. My sand is from natures ocean natural white.

skylardejohn 1 year ago
@skylardejohn It is absolutely safe to add hermits in your refugium buddy. They will not prey on the chaeto at all, and I have a few in my sump as well. You can also add some snails. dougnight44 1 year ago
It;s just a part of this hobby and expected especially new systems.

dougnight44 1 year ago
@dougnight44 Good to hear that the corals recovered. This is the very reason why I do not use medication. Although highly effective at what it does, if it kills cyano, it will surely kill something else lol. Good luck and thanks for providing that info and commenting :)

Any fact behind this?
wesleyforbes 1 year ago
@wesleyforbes Even if you have a phosphate reactor with media, do you use ro/di water, are you feeding the dirty water found in frozen cubes, how long is the bulb in the refugium, do you overfeed, is the system overstocked, not enough clean up crew perhaps and there is detritus settling in and causing phosphates, how long has the system been running and how long was it until you decided to get the phospban reactor, all of these come into play as far as phosphates goes.
newyorksteelo 1 year ago
@newyorksteelo Let's see... yes I use ro/di, I only ocassionaly feed cubes. The light is on a reverse to the main lights and are run for 8 hours. I do not over feed as when I do it is mass hysteria and the food gets devouered in less than a minute! My system as you have already seen is very lightly stocked at the moment and my skimmer is rated for a 150 gallon light stock to 90g heavy stocked. My clean up crew is for a 100g and I have a 90.
wesleyforbes 1 year ago
@wesleyforbes My system has been running for a while but I have replaced a lot of the rock due to the hair algae bloom I had during the summer. After doing this, there was a short cycle, then the clean up crew got everthing under contol except a few areas of algae. Should I put some critters in the sump?
wesleyforbes 1 year ago
@wesleyforbes Hair algae bloom, bingo, definitely phosphates int he system for sure buddy. The critters will not consume the cyano but will help keep the detritus in check, so yeah, there should be atleast a brittle starfish down there and a few hermits. They wont prey on the chaeto. I usually run my refugium lights 24 hours a day. How old is the refugium light is another question you should as yourself. I replace mine yearly and need to replace it as a matter of fact.
