Walked on the field of the Polo Grounds to take the subway home. Then Shea. Home. Early to mid 60's with my dad. I saw Willie Mays take batting practice. Went to a mayor's trophy game in '69 by myself - a great game. Took my nephew to see Joel Youngblood play. Saw Todd Hundley hit a grand slam. Took my son to a 'run the bases' game. We saw Mark McGuire hit his 51st home run. Saw Jose Reyes steal second. Tom Glavine being taken out in the FIRST inning. We had SO MUCH FUN!!!!!!!!
They could have included more footage that was importnt to Shea such as the Beatles first concert in 1965, the NY Jets spent about 20 years there also some pix of the rock n roll bands that played like the Who, the Clash, the Rolling Stones, Elton John, Eric Clapton and Grand Funk Railroad.
I remember going to Shea Stadium a few times. My favorite player of that era was Tom Seaver. I did get to see him pitch once and of course, he won that game. I really hate knowing that it is no longer around. So many memories of triumph and defeat. I really hope that the Mets win another World Series sometime in their new stadium.
Also, Shea Stadium was more for the Blue Collar worker. Citi Field dosent fit right. And I hate the height of the fences and their lengths. A pitchers ball park....Come on.
I remember the days when my brother and I couldnt afford tickets. So we would hop the ''N'' train, transfer to the ''7'' train and be at the ballpark 3 hours before the first pitch. With a homemade sandwich and a Pepsi can. With the finished Pepsi can, you would be able to get into Shea stadium for free every Wednesday. Never forget it. Shout out 2 Turk Wendell who used 2 come to the games on his bike. lol
@NewYorkStateOfCrime wow my dad did the same thing. He told me if you gave them cans you can get in for free. He road his bike from Woodhaven. Unfortantely one night after the game all their tires were ripped out so they had to walk home...
I went to Shea once. In August of 08. Saw a walk off and seeing that stadium shake was crazy and I will never forget it.
...They named that steel "bridge" beyond right field (outfield) after him...isn't that terrible? They can't even bother to paint that damn "bridge" royal blue (and maybe paint the rivets orange?). worked for the new york mets in the player parking lot for ten great years and love the time there thanks to all the fans and players who passed my gate ..... you are the best...... luis #19
and I also heard that there planning to build a Hotel and a Restaurant right whare the Salvage yard, Metal Shop and car parts are next to the stadium, are they really going to do that?
New York will never be the same without shea stadium im glad i went to a game before they teard it down im still sad tough but i will always remember you shea and will never park in top of you since that what they made you now a parking lot to citi field R.I.P SHEA STADIUM
lets see,my 1st game at shea mid 70's,seaver lost to the padres&the hated randy jones..3-0..& i as a idiot 7 yr old had the nerve to yell SEAVER YOU STINK! ,i swear the crowd went silent and looked at me..lol..my last game at shea:1985..i got to meet clint hurdle the mets backup catcher & he gave me 3 tickets to the next days game..won by the mets 15-10 against the hated braves..straw and george foster hit hr's for the mets.
Hey Cabstronaut, I actually have a photo of Mettle taken out there by the parking lot fence (lol). And, to O2Hat, you're right, those orange and blue panels were definitely Shea's best look, and who can forget that huge white scoreboard! They ruined everything with that blue paint in the '80s.
What makes me mad is all of these beautiful old ballparks (Shea, Three Rivers, Veterans,) are all being torn down just so that all these companies can build stadiums with their name on them just so they can make a quick dollar. It sickens me.
I agree with you. And many of these new ones are inferior replacements. I'm not a Mets fan, but I went to Shea many times & thought it was a great place. I always had great experiences there. New York really lost something irreplaceable when they razed Shea & the Stadium. The newer parks might have more "amenities" (for wealthier fans, of course) but the real ones had more charm, more a sense of aura.
My cousin got us tickets to the press level ( around 1965) i sat next to Monty Irvin, he introduced himself to me ( i was 10 years old) and was nicest guy you would ever meet ,also remember seeing strawberry hit a walkoff and as we walked down the ramp to go home everyone chanting "daryll","daryll","daryll'. Also sat next to Your Fathers Mustache Band behind the mets dugout, they played their bangos. I will always miss shea, I cant get into Citi Field, nice to see others feel the same as me
great video. I was there when rose fought buddy and i ran out onto the field after they beat the Reds, i ran toward the reds dugout and sparky anderson was standing there with a couple of other reds with bats in their hands ready to hit anyone who entered the dugout ,no one did. I also watched a game standing behind home plate ( it was around 1968 - 1972) i turned and noticed Broadway Joe standing next to me , he watched the game for about 2 innings, i said hello. -enjoyed the other comments
Never been there. Interesting to see this video and read the comments. It's the people and their goings-on that really gives a building a soul and brings it alive. Somehow, I wish I could've been there.
It might have been a dump..but the fans who went to Shea ..made more noise on a thursday afternoon against the Expos , then this new place does on a friday night vs the Yanks
I was at the first game played at Shea. Jack Fisher against the Pirates. Look at the Pirates' lineup that day and you can guess how it went. I was at the fifth game of the 1969 World Series when Cleon got hit on the foot and the umpire didn't believe him until Gil Hodges came out of the dugout and showed the ump the stain on the ball from Cleon's shoe polish. They used to give free tickets if you clipped coupons from Dairylea milk cartons. I saw a Nate Colbert HR hit a bus in the parking lot.
Shea definately provided us with alot of good memories. Although Citifield is nice, it is still to soon to call it home. I wonder what it would be like if the Mets had a good team? Would the fans be stuffing their faces with food or would they be sitting in their seats watching the game? Time will tell.
I know a couple of people didn't like Shea, but like you guys who are commenting on this video, me and my brother liked Shea. Yes, Citi Field is awesome, but hey, in 2008, Shea Stadium and the original Yankee Stadium, staples in the history of baseball, were closed forever. They were both great stadiums and they will be missed.
When the wrecking balls decended upon Shea it was like a dagger going through my heart. All the great memories of Shea Stadium, the invigorating Mets victories, losses... and the shear excitment of the truly Miracle Season of 1969... Seaver's near perfect game against the Cubs, Cleon Jones' shoe polish ploy, the sweep of the Braves in the first year of playoffs, Swoboda and Agee's great catches in the World Series... nothing will ever compare to that year. Shea will live forever in our memory
When the Yankees beat the Mets in 2000, I thought it was the worst thing that could ever happen to the Mets. Looking back, I realize it was just a blip on the radar, and is NOTHING compared to the glory of the 1969 team, and 1986 team for that matter. Those 2 teams DWARF what happened in 2000. Shea will always be in my heart.
Dude Shea was the shit it was better than any yankee stadium jericho360 your right the food did suck but hell you didnt go there for the food you went there for the game, the stadium, and the mets
one of my favorite places to go... this place was ELECTRIC. the stands shook like no where else. may seem a little scary but i remember after pratt hit that homer against the dbacks way back when... my dad pointed up the the upper deck and you could literally see the levels moving up and down. something i will never forget.
Philssux15 your absolutley right same with me and Jericho360 STFU who gives a crap if they serve Fish at Citi Field honestly nobody complains bout that besides you
Shea Stadium was great. Screw everyone who hated on it. You go to a ballpark to watch a goddamn baseball game. NO Amusment Parks, fancy restaurants or stupid video game playing areas. Just baseball damnit. That place was amazing. I've been to Disney World but nothing wil ever replace walking into Shea everytime I did. (It never got old.):-(. I'll always miss it....
Wait until I publish my next novel written from the perspective of a true Mets fan since 1983. Lots of scenes in my novel take place at Shea during matches against the Cards and the heartbreaking Game 4 of the 1988 NLCS against the Dodgers. Hate to bring that up but it's in my novel. My novel is a tribute not only to Shea Stadium but to all the Robert Moses structures. Let's Go Mets!
I wish Shea was still standing. Citi Field is a joke to me. Who goes to a Mets game to play fucking wiffle ball! If you bring your kid to do that, then stay home and have the game on TV! And there is no need to have fish, sushi and other random crap there to! So what that the food at Shea sucked, because you go to a ball game to have a fucking hot dog, with soda or a beer not fucking fish. It is riduclous now a days. But Shea will live on in our memories that if for sure.
@jericho360 I have moved out of NYC since 1997. My heart broke when I heard that Shea was being demolished for Citi Field. Shea Stadium was a proper place to watch the game and buy hot dogs, ice cream, pretzels, soda and beer. If I want to eat seafood, I would go to City Island not at a baseball game. If I want sushi, I go to the East Village rather than at a baseball game. I really hate what Bud Siegel has done to MLB. Anyway, just wanted to reply to your comment. Nice one!
@DerKosmonaut1972 Memories that will never die, I told a friend that for whatever reason I own the Mets I will try my best to get rid of all that stuff and return it to the ways it was at Shea and from what my dad told me, and not have seats that cost $500, or even $1,000, and have Citi Field rock like Shea did.
i grew up at shea. citi is great but im sad shea is gone. good video but one problem: WHY THE FUCK IS COW-BELL-MAN RECOGNIZED? cow-bell-man is the quintessential pain in the ass. honestly a benny agbayani clip wouldve been more shea than cow-bell-man. jeez
i was at shea for pratts homer against the d-backs in the division series, countless fire works nights including the amazing 8th inning comeback, and the final game of the subway world series. ill never forget shea or the great times i had there.
I was at that game when they scored 10 in the 8th too....Mike Piazza's line drive 3-run homer too finish the rally. Then i went to the 1st game after 9/11 with another great Piazza homer. Saw Lenny Harris break or tie (cant remember which) the pinch hits record at one of the last games i went to at Shea before i moved west.....lot of great memories at the great place.
Nothing will ever replace Shea. Ever. At least they marked down where the plate, mound and bases were in the parking lot. And my friend calls Citi Field, Shea parking lot, because to true Met fans that's all it is really. A parking lot.
A fixture for my life growing up on Long Island. Shea was a landmark. I saw my first and last Mets' games there with my best friend and his father. His dad bought the tickets and treated us to some great games. Although I saw the Mets win a few in between, they lost both we saw with him.
My best friend's dad passed some time ago. When Shea went, so did a piece of my heart and love for a great man.
metsny5715 couldnt agree with you more... and awesome video im a huge met fan and am guna miss it dearliy, it was my home stadium for the first 15 yeras of my life and am def guna miss it. GO METS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
aw did lil bro lose there house big bro did 2 but big bro had history in his old house lil bro basicly had nothing but dont worry lil bro there always a new year o ait we gonna win number 27 but whos counting
Great Tribute. Im going to miss this place I was many big games, the 1999 wild pitch to force the one game playoff with the reds, Game 3 of the 2000 world series, the double play in Game 1 of the 2006 NlDS and the last game at Shea 9/28/08. Even though it was not the nicest stadium it was great for what it was.
It was home for us.. Every Met fan, its home, and the new Stadium would be like the new home you go to and have to get used to, which will take a very long time for me.
Thanks for the video. The stadium is not just a mass of concrete and steel -- it's the nexus of many memories over the past 40 years, the most poignant for me being the days I cheered the Mets with my late father. It's hard for me not to feel emotional about it's demise.
Very nice job. It didn't really hit me until the night before the last game. All the memories came back. The best is when I attended a game with my Dad and my son. The three of us watched Hundley break the single season HR record for a catcher. My Dad, a Brooklyn Dodger fan, often spoke of that day until the day he died. Always in my heart Shea !!
my parents got married at Shea june 10th 1984 and they were hoping to have another party there for their 25 anniversary but by that time it will be a parking lot :( Good mem... Great memories here and i'm sad to see it go. I went to both the saturday and sunday game and stayed till the end.. those marlins would not get off our field and they acted very inappropriately and were very obnoxious by running on the field
Oh man, my mother was right about one thing. " You don't know you have until it's gone. Those memories are priceless. I attended Flushing High School when the Mets won in 86. The next day while taking the 7 train. My friend and I started some madness. I remember when the conductor announed over the speaker, " Next stop The Home of the WS Champs the New York Mets : Shea Stadium" The people in that car went nuts. I went to many games there. I will miss SHEA STADUIM.
I too my 7-yr old nephew to the next-to-last regular season game on Saturday, Sept 27, 2008. His first at Shea, and our last. I didn't realize how much the place meant to me until I got there, and then all of the memories of good times spent watching our Mets with my grandfather and uncles and cousins, and especially my dad. Very emotional. And what a way to go! watching Johann Santana throw a 3-hit, 9 strikeout gem on only 3-days rest! I'll miss the old place, that's for sure.
At the last game, when Florida won The Met fans stayed true for Shea one last time buy chanting, "Off our field, off our field." Goodbye Shea, Citi field will be good but it won't be able to replace Shea's memories and thrills.
I am going to cry tomorrow. I have thought for awhile our Mets needed a new park, but I am going to really miss Shea. There is just something about this place that makes it so special. RIP Shea, you will always be a part of all Mets fans.
Wow... I didn't realize how much this place meant to me until this weekend. I'll miss it, but at the same time I'll be excited to go to my first Mets game at Citi field. Let's go Mets!!
I went to Shea for the first (and last) time last week, and I'm sorry to say it but I'm not overly impressed, but then again, I'm not a Mets fan. Shea Stadium has served its purpose and it will be missed for a while, but I'm fairly sure that feeling will pass the second Citi Field opens its doors.
This place is everything to me..I wish they'd leave it alone.....they at least should have kept the name in some aspect..William Shea founded the team..there would be no Mets without him...it's a slap in the face not to keep his name on the building...they sold out unfortunately...
I'm a Red Sox fan but the other night I went to Shea Stadium when the Mets were playing the Nationals and walked around the outside of it and took footage of the Old stadium and the construction of the new one. I came up with some pretty good footage until I was approached by some security guards who said that since 9/11 there is to be no taking footage of any buildings that are undergoing construction. By the way go Red Sox.
shea the last of the cookie cutter stadiums. three rivers, pittsburg.riverfront cinn,KC,baltimore. saw my first met game back in 72.still got the program! tom seaver on cover somewhere in the my moms house in jersey.shea is the last one to go RIP.
The thing I will miss the most about Shea is that the EVERY day fan of the Mets won't be able to get into Citi Field because Prices will be out of this universe. So only the rice yuppies will be able to get in. The Die hard Met fan will not be able to get unless they want to pay 1,000. Another thing is that the only reason the new stadium was suggested was to make New York City look good for 2012 Olympics. ITS NOT IN NEW YORK! CANCEL THE BUILDING.
lol i'm mad at bill buckner for missing the ball because i'm a sox fan, but i got over it, mets rule though, lol i still remember the roger clemens and mike piazza fight
giants moved out of NYC with the dogers in 57. u can thank robert moses for that one.and the cross bronx expressway also.giants baseball and football in upper manhaten around 165st. right across from yankee stadium! mets still wear the old NY from giants. dodgers were called the bryklyn trolly car dogers, on the fact that u had to dodge the trollys that were there way before ebets field.
I've been a lifelong Met fan. I moved to Europe from NYC in mis May 2005. The last game I saw at Shea was on May 2 2005 against the Phillies. I knew that would be my last trip to Shea ever. I must have taken me 30 minutes to walk down the ramps to the exit. When I finally reached the exit I felt as if I were I was saying goodbye to an old friend. Thanks for the memories Shea and LETS GO METS!!!
I may despise the replace-Mets (only got your team because the Giants and Dodgers left, don't EVER forget that), but I will really miss Shea. I am a Yankee fan, but I am a baseball fan first. And I saw some good games there. Had some great times. And my Jets played there as well. The thing that hurts me most about losing Yankee Stadium is we are just getting a replica, a poor imitation. Citi Field is an upgrade for Met fans. But the memories will never be replaced. Godspeed, Shea Stadium.
i dont understand why they are tearing down al these "cookie cutter stadiums" the new parks are much seat less so ticket prices are much higher its just a scam to make the owners richer also who cares what the stadium looks like u go to watch the game not the stadium
Thanks so much for posting that wonderful tribute! BTW, Mookie would have beaten Buckner to first even if the ball did not roll through his legs. He was playing way behind the bag and his legs were not fast enough to beat out the speeding Mook. I was at that game and it was a hoot!

When Shea was full, it was probably the loudest place on Earth. It definintley has a place in my memories forever.
jericho360 2 years ago 2
Hey Cabstronaut, I actually have a photo of Mettle taken out there by the parking lot fence (lol). And, to O2Hat, you're right, those orange and blue panels were definitely Shea's best look, and who can forget that huge white scoreboard! They ruined everything with that blue paint in the '80s.

What makes me mad is all of these beautiful old ballparks (Shea, Three Rivers, Veterans,) are all being torn down just so that all these companies can build stadiums with their name on them just so they can make a quick dollar. It sickens me.
gullwing14 2 years ago 5

I will always miss shea, I cant get into Citi Field, nice to see others feel the same as me
niterider1914 2 years ago
great video. -enjoyed the other comments
niterider1914 2 years ago
Never been there. Interesting to see this video and read the comments. It's the people and their goings-on that really gives a building a soul and brings it alive. Somehow, I wish I could've been there.

DIEcorporateSCUM 2 years ago
I know a couple of people didn't like Shea, but like you guys who are commenting on this video, me and my brother liked Shea. Yes, Citi Field is awesome, but hey, in 2008, Shea Stadium and the original Yankee Stadium, staples in the history of baseball, were closed forever. They were both great stadiums and they will be missed.
Sutidude 2 years ago
When the wrecking balls decended upon Shea it was like a dagger going through my heart. All the great memories of Shea Stadium, the invigorating Mets victories, losses... and the shear excitment of the truly Miracle Season of 1969... Seaver's near perfect game against the Cubs, Cleon Jones' shoe polish ploy, the sweep of the Braves in the first year of playoffs, Swoboda and Agee's great catches in the World Series... nothing will ever compare to that year. Shea will live forever in our memory

Shea was the scene of God's last miracle - the 1969 Mets.
The 1986 Mets were also a great team that provided wonderful memories.

@Philssux15
DerKosmonaut1972 1 year ago
I wish Shea was still standing. Citi Field is a joke to me. Who goes to a Mets game to play fucking wiffle ball! If you bring your kid to do that, then stay home and have the game on TV! And there is no need to have fish, sushi and other random crap there to! So what that the food at Shea sucked, because you go to a ball game to have a fucking hot dog, with soda or a beer not fucking fish. It is riduclous now a days. But Shea will live on in our memories that if for sure.
jericho360 2 years ago 14
@jericho360 I have moved out of NYC since 1997. My heart broke when I heard that Shea was being demolished for Citi Field. Shea Stadium was a proper place to watch the game and buy hot dogs, ice cream, pretzels, soda and beer. If I want to eat seafood, I would go to City Island not at a baseball game. If I want sushi, I go to the East Village rather than at a baseball game. I really hate what Bud Siegel has done to MLB. Anyway, just wanted to reply to your comment. Nice one!
DerKosmonaut1972 1 year ago
@DerKosmonaut1972 Memories that will never die, I told a friend that for whatever reason I own the Mets I will try my best to get rid of all that stuff and return it to the ways it was at Shea and from what my dad told me, and not have seats that cost $500, or even $1,000, and have Citi Field rock like Shea did.
