  • every single tab I get for this song is wrong, can someone please jot these chords down?

  • @TheNcd24 sometime in the next 5 years maybe?

  • best artist ever....greets from Chile

  • How can you NOT have gotten the guitar in your shot? Damn it!

  • Believe me, I don't want to be the guy to criticize this. Elliott is my favorite musician of all time. But this song is so lacking without the harmonies. The harmonies in this song give me chills. Every time. He was such an amazing writer. His melodies are so haunting.

  • @pushherinthesnow the highlight of this song is the lyrics, "a dying man in a living room." that's all, everything else is as great as always, but that's the highlight.

  • goddammit now im sad

  • aww he hae a martin, what happen to his yammy. 1 lucky soul has that :)

  • commentors just don't get it...

  • i tried my hardest to sing along with him but it was too sad :(

  • I hate how most electric-acoustics sound. So whiny.

  • this whole concert he was trying so hard to cry, that shit is amazing

  • GODDAMN. RIP. SO SAD THIS DUDE STILL AINT DOING THIS. CRY

  • a friend indeed.

  • A girl I never understood used to love this song.

All I have is her memory now.

They played this at her Services.

I want this played at my services.

  • Does anyone know what tuning this is in?

  • @jivebandit standard tuning, capo on 2nd fret

  • This isn't just a performance, it's an experience.

  • It's terrible to see him in these videos that are from right before his death. You can see him withering away and it's sad, yet he still performs so well in every one that I've seen. It's absurd, but I'm glad that his musical prowess didn't fade along with the rest of him even then.

  • @dinkus92 i like how the fact that someone died early ends up creating this whole myth that he was "withering away." first off this performance was 3 years before he died - how is that "right before his death." second off, this show was littered with sound problems. finally, i suggest you go and watch the videos of shows "right before his death." he is in great shape, looks happy, healthy, and was completely sober.

    let's end these myths.

  • @zwfwrestling Wow, so astounding. Golly, I'm sure glad we've got someone like you here to enlighten all of us. Man, you must have known him REALLY well. and I LIKE the fact that you seem to be under the impression that someone who spiraled out of control and stabbed himself to death was sober and happy right before. If you've ever read anything written by his producers, friends, and girlfriend, they seem to say something quite different. So. . .sorry, I find your comment a bit unnecessary.

  • @dinkus92 its like 3 yrs before his death

  • @11salparadise Right, so that means he was perfectly fine. The fact that your statement ends by acknowledging his death, his very untimely death, proves my point. I made a simple comment about how it's sad that my favorite artist is dead, and now the hoard of pretentious Youtube "experts" decide that must be put in my proverbial place. WOW.

  • @dinkus92 Right WOW

  • @dinkus92 p.s. i'm not an expert (sarcasm noted) im just another teenager with wikipedia who is simply stating you're wrong this was not, "right before his death," it was 3 years before. I'm simply putting you in your proverbial place...bitch.

  • i remember when he was alive... i was in highschool.. people typecasted him as "emo" (oremember the days when that term didnt exist)

maybe a year or two after he passed away.. heard a heatmiser song... loved it... than i heard angeles.... i cant believe i believed that bullshit hype when he was alive

i already know.. hands down... he is my favorate song writer of my time... no makes music like this guy... never have... never will.... enjoy people... elliot smith

  • what kind of hat is he wearing? I like it (:

  • It's a bucket hat.

  • It's almost hard to believe he was real.

  • Elliott Smithwas the fucking man. Half of the comments i read on Youtube are from stupid assholes... thank you loveishell7 for putting these videos from this performance up....They are pristine! His playing is like impecable....He was the closest thing to John Lennon this world will ever see...hail satan

  • @legalizegassett lol hail satan, you are a dork

  • Guitar sounds great in this performance, but his voice is a bit off. Either way, love E Smith!

  • @joefantabulous He was stabbed in the chest twice with a kitchen knife. The LA county coroner has classified his death as "undetermined", aka they are not sure if it was a suicide or a homicide.

  • great song

  • great song

  • i heard he had problems with his heart

  • I think eliot smith is great, yet in this video he very much resembles a drunk fisherman. It's as though while singing the chorous he's pondering as to where to purchase some good tackle and some cheap vodka for a night of angling off the side of the freeway somewhere. It's really terrible what drugs do to people. He looks terrible, and he's singing about his own downfall as a human being. If that isn't depressing I don't know what is.

  • Comment removed

  • @drezler5

It depends on how you look at the song. I've heard people interpret as him not so much singing about his downfall as a human, but the downfall of the addiction. Possibly he just sings about himself as the addict, and with "fond farewell" he bids that part of his life bye.

Can't be too sure I guess.. But when you hear "this is not my life" it seems plausible

  • foget about his personal life his hat his guitar that makes no difference anymore... he's gone... that guy was a genius...

  • so this is elliot oh

  • this song is fuckin tight

  • It's funny how I can give you a really good estimate of how much heroin was playing a role in his life at any given moment based on the hat he was wearing at the time

  • his real fave guitar was the Yamaha

FG-180. anyway I dont really think he would care about how much all us people liked/loved him - He only cared how much really close friends and family liked and loved him. which is and should be the same way all of of us approach life.

  • One of my faves! But i wish i could have heard songs like memory lane and this earlier. Probably very difficult with all the chord changes and singing live. Thanks for the 4track Les Paul!

  • stunning. thanks v much for posting

  • this is a beautiful song, why do the best people feel so insecure, I guess they fly too close to the sun.

  • Just a really clever and beautiful hook and guitar.. it's got a Replacements and Nirvana feel to it.

  • That guitar wasn't actually his - The action seemed really high ... Besides that, This is definitely one of the Highlights of Elliott's Musical life! I wish he was still alive, so he could see how much people cared.

  • He was anything but an asshole, asshole.

  • I like it better than the original.

  • It'd be cool if Sam Coomes was there doing slide guitar and backup vocals.

  • . . .this is not my life.

  • i love you elliott,i really do

  • It looks like its diffucult for him to sing and play later songs. Given that, It takes him to a new level of songwriting. In my opinion to be able to connect on multiple songwriting levels.

  • Comment removed

  • shame i only discovered him after his death. Elliott smith is truely amazing

    . RIP

  • hmm, how the fuck is it while this man was alive- the charts were topped with artist like sysco and 3 doors down? dont get it.

  • Because people don't pay attention to lyrics and don't look for meaning in music anymore man

  • how is it that you have a name based off of a blink 182 song?

  • you obviously liked/like them if you know the origin of his name and still i fail to see where liking blink 182 has anything to do with liking elliott smith

  • Because the world is filled with ignorant fools who don't know what to look for in good music. This man was a lyrical artist and had a sense of what made good music, he also never sold himself out to the record companies like most other artist did. another thing wrong with people and music today is stations like MTV that label what is cool and what's not and that isn't what music is about and that is why people won't open their minds to this music.

  • preach it, brotha. I have said something to that extent so so many times.

  • i kinda like that most people dont or didnt get it. Most people like their music superficial and bland, that couldn't be any further from eliiott.

  • amazing. RIP

  • damn this video made me pretty upset, sucks hes gone

  • I miss you elliott. I wish I could have been there to hear you play. :(

  • elliotts cheap yamaha sounds better than that expensive martin. not nice at all realy buzzy.

  • ya i agree

  • well that martin is a cutaway which tends to take away the fullness of the guitar..and the pickup in the guitar sounds like its under the saddle which typically is cold sounding....he still rocks it tho...

  • i love hearing him perform without 12 year old fans screaming at the top of their lungs

  • so underrated... and he's a great guitarist... its just hard to tell cuz its not showy

  • I wish I could have seen him in Seattle. I was kind of young when he died, and it makes me so sad.

I would give anything to see him. He's such a beautiful person.

  • i luv how he gets the last chord wrong, smiles and starts hittin the guitar :)

  • One of my fav ES songs, and thats saying something.

  • OMG, this is so sad, but I feel this exact way often. Honestly.

I became a huge Elliott Smith just after "Basement on a Hill" came out. I miss you soo much Elliott.

This songs owns all other singer/songwriters.

  • errr huge fan...just after......

no one could ever be Elliott. Damn, bad missed word by me. Shit.

  • just because it takes some people longer to find elliot doesn't mean they mean any less to them, i mean a lot of people were still pretty young when he died, much less when most of his albums came out

wheather when he was alive or dead his music touches people.

  • u should stop trying to figure out all these hidden details about what elliott was about and the shit he got into, and just jam on his music.

  • another singer i won't be able to see live. Damn i should habe lived 20 years ago so i could see all of them!

    Elliott rocks!

  • i wish i could have met him or at least seen him live. so amazing

    -peace

  • Drunk Elliott is drunk.

  • "Disconnecting from the miissng link" -- is that breaking up with someone whom you once thought to be the love of your life?

He just forgot the words on that one line. You can tell by how he smiles and looks over at the end.

  • It's disconnecting from humanity. The missing link is what separates humans from animals.

  • waltz#2 is a great song but I haven't heard anybody mention "last hour" that is one of my favorites!

  • he was such a great performer.

  • elliotts' song writing skills are more mind boggling than any invention. light bulb, air plane you name it. Watching him on video only enhances the surrealness of it. i didn't know he made this song in 2000. my fav

  • beautiful and broken video. its interesting how he left "a little less than a human being" out of the song. youre timeless elliott <3

  • hm. i can't tell if it was on purpose or maybe he just temporarily forgot the words and recovered quickly. wish i knew!

  • It's obviously about someone he had a relationship with, maybe he was feeling it was a little to harsh to say now.

  • I know it's cliche for people to say every Elliott song is about drugs, but this one is. It's probably the most poignant song about drug addiction I've ever heard.

  • What about "True Love"?

  • Great lyrics, though I'd still rank Fond Farewell higher. It's more nuanced and has prettier, more polished lines. I agree that the outpouring in "True Love" is heartbreaking, though.

  • wow ive never heard of elliot smith until a week ago when i heard this song...a week later and this song is still stuck in my head, this guy really looks like he lives for music

  • He really did, a shame he doesn't anymore. Listen to Waltz #2, it's really good too.

  • waltz #2 is really good, i also love somebody i used to know and between the bars. but fond farewell remains to be my favorate at the moment :)

  • you're in for a real treat if you're just discovering his music....enjoy

  • I love elliott smith but this vid is hard to watch. he sounded pretty bad..he was a broken man indeed R.I.P elliott

  • this is rough

    poor elliott :(

  • whos elliot smith o.o

  • We all love and miss you Elliott.

  • i dont think he killed himself no matter what anyone says.

  • agreed..... that whole story is still a mystery.... so much shadiness...... esspecially during a happier and healthier part of his life.... doesnt make any sense to me either

  • when overcoming addiction like his, people often get severly depressed long after they are sober and healthy

  • He was using over 1000$ of crack and heroin each day at this point, and living mostly off of vanilla ice cream. True Love is his saddest song.

  • god damn thats alot of smack.

    RIP

  • where'd you get your info??? just trying to sound like a music mogul???? give the man some respect. 1000$ a day you dont know what you're talking about the human body couldn't withstand a week of that.

  • read the bio "elliott smith and the big nothing". it was more like 1500 in crack and heroin per day. such a sad story and such a haunted man. always my favorite elliott.

  • You can read his biography aswell as many stories from the people who surrounded him during his last days at his official website sweet adeline.

  • Oh the guitar sounds so pretty.

  • Thats a sweet hat n hair

  • his hair is longer than mine! yay!

  • why do you all hate this comment? yes Elliott Smith is amazing, but he looks horrible! thats why he stabbed himself, cant deny that

  • What's that suppose to mean?

  • He was a disaster at the end of his life. Even Wayne Coyne pointed out that he was just letting his life spin out of control. Don't get me wrong, I love Elliott Smith and I absolutely love this song; it just makes me sad to see him like this.

  • Quit trying to magnify and romanticize the very played out and exaggerated image of the dark suffering of an artist in the prime who is falling of the band wagon in the final stages leaving to his death. just enjoy the great performance

  • killer pink pants

  • The only maker that you want to meet.

  • Sounds like he's having a cold..

  • he sounds great though, the shame is that it sounds like his guitar pickup is having a cold...

  • I disagree, i really think it's his voice :P

  • They are talking about the ringing the strings make.

  • good and evil matched perfect its a great romance.

  • holy shit. amazing.

  • sometimes when everything gets to be too much, and i just cannot stand it, i can just turn on this song and it all goes away

  • This world is a killer, and it loves to destroy beautiful things.

  • R.I.P. Elliot, your the best guy that ever lived, see you in Heaven

  • QFT

I probably couldn't have said it better

  • This breaks my heart.

  • I'm obviously temporarily blind sometimes, never mind!

  • Does anyone know specifically when this is?

  • September 2nd, 2000 in Seattle, Washington @ the Bumbershoot festival.

  • Doesn't change much

  • One of my favorite songs, with The Last Hour.

  • why did he had to kill himself, he had too many people that loved him...

  • but how could he ever go on?

  • Heroin is an Opiate Steve

  • yeah he is deffentally on alot of drugs at this point so maybe y hs face is liek tht but i do not think it is opiate i think it is more heroin to me but this is still a realyl good song

  • it's not that hes not into it.. it's just because this is the first time he played this song live

  • maybe he seems like he isnt into it cause hes really high? im not sure did that dwell on anyone else? Cause he is definetly doing the opiate blink i get the same thing when im high on opiates.

  • not trying to be a jerk, but lets just leave drugs out of the music, you either can be high on something and let it mess you up , or it doesnt effect you at all and it actually cuts the edge off for you, and elliott was one of those types of people, if you read his biography you would realize this

  • o no doubt man im not knocking drug use im actually in the same boat as Elliot its all good im not knockin him i love him man. Great artist. But drugs and music go together mostly u cant leave drugs out of it it just seems that all graet artists have there vices. I have mine as well but u cant leave it out. But the way he looks in this is because its seattle the best place for heroin in America besides the east coast in Philly. ok

  • Ahh! Twangy string!

  • the whole vibe of this show seems off...he's still a badass mutha though.

  • capo.

  • I think somethings messed up with his fret-holder-thing (forget what its called)...great song though

  • his capo

  • brilliant. his music has helped me get through some tough times.

    RIP

  • Stop looking at his pants and listen. The man is saying something that will change your life.

  • He is wearing some fucking badass pants.

  • this is really sad,

you can tell he was really not feelin it that nite

  • I agree. He may be performing the song well but it just seems like he wasn't into it. From the other performances you can usually tell hes enjoying himself.

  • I dont think it was that he wasnt into it, look at the other videos from this show. he seems pretty upbeat about playing his new song. even in the "dark era of shows" (mid '01 - late '02) he tried his hardest to show off his new songs. the twangy string looks like it was pissing him off, a lot.

  • he looks sad,

i don't like seeing when he seems hurt, he's too beautiful

  • it was still magical to be there im sure. but its not one of his best performances. and dont get me wrong, im a HUGE Elliott fan who would never say anything negative about him....but this wasn't one of his cleanest times.

  • i don't agree... it's a great preformece

  • god i love this song

  • makes me sad...=[

  • i dunno why he's not puting the capo on 4 fret

    it's much more easy

    o_o

  • I don't think it really matters to him because he wrote the song and he can play it how ever the hell he wants to...and you know why...CAUSE HE'S GOD DAMN ELLIOTT SMITH!

  • well...yeah...

  • it's HIS song.

  • he looks terrible...

  • great song!!!!

  • Even the most extrovert of us sometimes feel that people should pay attention to our innermost suffering.

Elliot Smith illustrates this with a beauty unmatched by any of his contemporaries.

    God Bless

  • thanks for this. sad to see though.
