I had that wrong, it could do more than 90 , but to comply with the FAA throttle stops were put in to keep it under 55mph. it also carried less than the 5 gallon limit of fuel on board.
on another note, this video is over 10 years old and the ultralight was grandfathered in before the FAA changed some of the restrictions. It was a true legal ultralight and even won a technical innovation award from the EAA in 1996.
Fu@#ing awesome! How much does something like that (Just the turbine unit) cost? Where do you purchase one? How much does it weigh and how much thrust does it make? Rough fuel consumption? And was it difficult to convert the engine to thrust?
Wow , love it...I think. Seems like the whole point of showing off jet is to let us hear the hiss and rev and explosion of the jet. The music is appreciated for the thought but would like a sound au natrual version. So how fast will it go? Can you put a bullistic chute on it? If so Ill take one.
Which plane are you flying? We are looking at a very similiar plane with folding alum wings except has fiberglass pod around pilot, 277 Rotax. We (A&P friend of mine) had thought it needs winglets to stablize it. Did you add yours or came on plane? thanks! Mike
I found this late of course...but all I can say is "You never cease to amaze me". The Wright brothers would be proud of you. Keep that inventive spirit alive my friend.
yeah man, im makin one of those , think ill just use 10 model plane engines instead of the jet bit too complex that is. Wouldnt like to find myself inverted in that thing think id crap meself to be frank.
That is an awesome plane, have you tried a rotax motor and if you have how does it compare with preformance and time of flight with the same fuel consumpion ?
Its a JFS-100 (jet fuel starter) from an A-7 Corsair. It was originally a starter turbine for a larger engine but we converted it to a pure jet. Thanks!
wicked video man. How much thrust does that engine put out? what's one cost? How fast does that ultralite go? sorry for all the questions but that thing rocks!
to keep it in the ultralight category we had to limit the engine to 90 mph. any faster and it would have been classified as a light plane and would require a license. Thanks for watching!
its stall rate is still the same. it actually provided the same power as the prop version because we put a limit on the throttle to keep it under 90mph. but the wing itself has a lower stall rate than a conventional style aircraft because its all lift. thanks for watching!
this was a "just for fun" promotional for the ultralight itself. i did post another video of entirely jet footage. if you search mitchell b-10 you should be able to find it.
WOW! This jet ultralight is one of the COOLEST things I've ever seen!
When I was a kid I made 4-wheel "gocart" sorta things using a 12V starter motor from a car & a 12V battery. Amazing... and this thing uses a starter turbine from an A7 Corsair, eh? Same sorta thing. hehe Only bigger. And a WHOLE lot more fun, I'm sure!!
TONY - Did you build this? Do you know the approx cost of the jet assembly that I presume could simply be added onto an ultralight wing?
do u have to have a special licence to make one? and fly it of course? because i want to be an aircraft engineer when im older and i would so make an ultralight and fly it to work lol
ultralights are special because you don't have to have a pilots liscence. with this one we had to limit its speed so it could still be classified as an ultralight.
i didnt know there was a speed limit just a weight limit. i had a big lifter dad and bro had a rally 2b. dad died in one im thinking of getting into it again. did you build that yourself?
Wow that is cool with the jet, im about to start flying ultralights, and u dont see hardly any of those with a jet engine. That must be a heck of alot of money to fuel and up keep?! But very cool!
Wow! What guts, jet engine attached to Mitchell flying wing! Did the wing mods eliminate the slip problem? I had a chance to buy one of those here locally.
That is the coolest thing I've seen all year. I'm sure the Jet cost mucho dinero... Very much worth the coolness factor. Plus it seems the performance is improved for climb etc. Jealous of you guys!!!
LOL awesome machine. When does commercial production start? I have no doubt you could sell quite a few. I have been around ultralights and sailplanes for years. This one blows them all away. Have you contacted the military. I bet they could find a use. google "bat wings" and look for the special ops turbo batwing. I wonder what kind of bids u would get on yahoo?
does the prop pusher exert p-force? and is the performance worth the GPH ...{ um ok that`s a givin WOO HOO ! } I`m thinking of building a b10 are they good for slow and low ?
What is the difference in power from the prop to the jet? What is the difference in performance of the ultralight? You gone from piston driven prop to jet. Are you going to try making a turboprop?
the jet can fly for about 30 minutes on kerosene using 10 gallons of fuel (depending on wind and air quality), but the prop engine could go for hours. the faa imposed a speed limit of 65mph but the wing can probably do over 100mph.
nah, kerosene is way cheaper and easier to get at a tiny airport way out in the country. it'd burn basically anything flammable, but kerosene burns pretty clean.
i checked on the fuel consumption and i was way off. it was more like 2 and a half gallons for 30 minutes of flight for the jet. with the prop it could usually go for somewhere around 4 hours. thanks again for watching!
Dope! I want one. thanx for sharing.

This technically isn't an ultralight anymore since it goes over 70mph, unless it can't.
agentfazexx 2 years ago 3
It won't go over 70 if you put a limiter on the throttle like we did. Which makes it perfectly legal.
dbrain78 2 years ago 14
So if some nefarious person were to unbolt the limiter before evry run and then bolt it back on in case anyone "offical" came round........

although it sound "cool" to put a jet engine, at those speeds a jet engine is not as efficient as a propeller engine would be.

ah, under part 103 your UL have a max level flight speed of 55kts.....cool, but legally not a ultralight.

the jet can fly for about 30 minutes on kerosene using 10 gallons of fuel (depending on wind and air quality), but the prop engine could go for hours. the faa imposed a speed limit of 65mph but the wing can probably do over 100mph.

kerosene? try Jet A-1 and some FSII. that might make the engine run without that whole "oops-i-put-diesel-in-an-electric-car" notion.
