On keeping it expanded, my source at Tennier (the mfg.) indicates that long term storage uncompressed in the black stuff sack (compression bag) is fine for the bag, which saves space from hanging it in the closet.
what do you recommend as far as pants? Like cargo pants with multiple pockets, i want to be able to wear them out in public as well as when i hike. Please reply :)
most anybody under any normal situation. I've never had any issue with the weight and durability is great. I've carried it it as a soldier and outdoorsman, and for the price it has no equivalent.a
Hi Adam I own this sleep system great if you got a vehicle near by because of the weight, I use the bivi with a Carinthia Tropen and a Snugpak Elite 1 as an inner or summer bag. Do they sell Carinthia sleeping bags in the US? I got my Tropen from ukmcpro.co.uk, it has a built in mosquito net its very warm and goes down to -12c and also packs down small leaving more room in my bergin I think its awesome. Keep up the good work Adam brilliant reviews and bushcraft tips.
Check out Uncle Sams Retail Outlet. They have a 4 pc system that has the Gortex cover and carring system. "Tennier Industries Modular Sleep System - New | 8465014456274
Our price: $149.99 "
•These complete systems are new in the original MFR packaging!
•Manufacturer: Tennier Industries
•Includes: Patrol Bag (8465-01-398-0685), Intermediate Sleeping Bag (8465-01-398-0687), Bivy Cover (8465-01-416-8517), and Compression Stuff Sack (8465-01-398-5428)
I just got a 20 degree Wiggy bag to complete my 3 pc set. Goretex bivy and over bag. Have used the goretex and over bag in 31 degree temp , however I was a little bit cold. But I like the versatility of the 3 bags over the 4 seasons. Plus the Wiggy is suppose to keep you warm even if wet.
Adam - Please consider doing a review on the Hawkes hellion 2020, Im sure alot of people would apprecate a review, The design looks really awesome. And it is endorsed by "one man armys" and "Man Woman Willd's" Myke Hawke so im sure there would be quite alot of interest in a review. Thanks for any time and consideration
I was told by a supply sergeant to keep my bags hung up in the closet. He said the bag loses warmth if it's kept compressed. Have you heard about this?
@TheAtarashiikaze Yes, I have heard that. You want to make sure you keep your bag expanded so it doesn't lose it insulation value. Thanks for the question.
I was out on an FTX with my army unit and we walked to a field where they told us to go to bed. I pulled out my black bag and my bivvy and laid on the ground and went to sleep. It was 17 degrees that night and I was just fine. I still have one and love it.
I notice that when something is to heavy for people they try to get something lighter but apart of survival is being physically fit and if your pack is to heavy for you the answer is simple, stop being lazy and get stronger...
I've been using the olive inner by itself for about 6months. I love it. It's been perfect for late summer, fall, and early winter. Sure it's a bit heavier then more expensive stuff. But for value, it's fantastic. I hope to pick up the rest of the kit this year. Bivy looks sweet.
I will have vids up later in year. Just can't afford all the cpu gear due to the price of my outdoor gear. I also believe in you get what you paid for.
I do not mean to knock him down. Just have a understanding that military gear is good for military people because you people are bred into machines. The average person would collapse from the weight of that gear. Military gear is cheaper but much heavier then the commercial market. My favorite pack i own is the Kelty Redwing. Since I try to be a minimalist I don't need a medical pack inside my pack. When packing little gear each pocket gets it's own purpose. Suscribed to Adam for a reason. PRO!!
That thing is HUGE when stuffed. 9lbs is HEAVY. For a guy who claims to be a minimalist he sure does pack alot. I don't just base this comment on this video only. This guy can shed a bunch of senseless weight.
The times ive used the older "black" version you have always as the new ACU pattern the Army is currently using, they have been great and always warm.. ive found you can stay warmer if you strip down to you skivies but keep em inside the bag with you....
I tried something new with mine this year... I own two patrol bags and two bivy bags... I did an early winter trip and slept in sub 30 degree weather with no tent (by choice) with the two patrol bags and the bivy and was comfy down to about 25 degrees... I love this as an option for no shelter other than the bivy.
@jljmonky , Heck yeah, In the fall and spring classes, I will use it without a shelter system, just the bevy, the patrol bag, and a wool blanket. I get close to the fire and make sure the wool covers the outer shell if there is no chance of rain, don't want floating embers burning my gortex, lol
That is not how it is supposed to be compressed...not sure why he didn't cinch the straps down but that is supposed to be about half the size as he showed. I think spec on that is something like 16in x 16in when properly compressed. Think like a medicine ball size you see at the gym. Other than that a good review Adam!
@whatyadoingfool , I guess I was just feeling lazy, I also did not separate the bags. You can absolutely get it more packed down. Thanks for you comment.
I have two of these sleep systems. I love them. They are a little heavier, but they alleviate the need for a tent in most conditions. Most of the time, this is all I use; sometimes I will place a tarp overhead for a wind break. My wife and I always stay toasty in our systems. Thanks for sharing this video!
@Equip2Endure I've used the system in below -10 degrees celcius (14 degrees fahrenheit) although you do need to be smart in how you set it up to avoid drafts and of course flooding
How about reviewing some of teh surplus pack systems out there? The ILBE system is very popular right now and I'd like to know a little more about it...also the various USGI assault packs out there like the Molle II...it's hard sometimes to discern what you are getting exactly in online auctions or even on websites. It would be good to get an idea of what you should expect for the price with a used military system.
@watchthisonemore There is a video on it here by Adam, search ILBE on the main page although it turned in to more of a BOB contents than a review of the bag itself.
@watchthisonemore , I did a quick test video with the ILBE a few months ago, a review is due soon. Thanks for posting and I will look into check out some other systems for you.
I had to turn mine in when I got out but found a full system at a mom and pop surplus shop for $150 so I brought in a bunch of my old stuff and traded the guy for the bags and a GI meal kit and a few other odds and ends and I take the sleep system everywhere I don't get to do much camping but I get to sleep on a few floors when I go visit family, hell once it got so packed I grabbed my bag and slept on the back porch in a good Louisiana rain storm stayed warm and dry. Very nice.
@roaming1978 , You are welcome, I figured I owned you guys some stuff like this. I have focused on some more pricey items lately. We like to keep it fresh here at E2E! ;)
great reveiw bro... I just bought 2 of these systems a few months back. Have not had a chance to try'em out yet other than in the house... I paid approx 220 for both, look around for the deals... A low of 7 degree's for tonight, might be a good nite to give'm a try
@houseoffire72 , Nice deal! I think you win the best deal contest! LOL! Let me know how your test goes! I can't wait until I can get out for an over night trek!
Wonderful! I bought the 4 part system about a year ago on eBay from a regular seller of surplus, used was $75 plus shipping of about $35 to Canada. I used it for 10 or 12 outings in the summer through Thanksgiving, the manageability of the layers is key. Stuffability is a bit better than you showed on the video, IF you crank down on the compression straps a bit more it fits into a MOLLE compartment in the military issue backpack system. It is a bit heavy though.
Ive slept in below freezing weather in freezing rain and snow in that thing when I was in the army and stayed toasty and dry everytime. I recently had to pick one up from the surplus, its hands down the best damn sleeping bag ever
@gibsonjr11 I agree. I remember the old intermediate army sleeping bag, and I use to freeze in those things. Once I used the ECWS I'm never going back to any other sleeping bag. Its worth it. Recently I lucked out and got six of these for free minus the green bag.
Operativegaming, check out Railrider pants/clothing. Obviously though for winter you might want some wool pants.
