Awesome story. Atleast he knows what could have happened, and thank god that it didnt. But the fact that he was worried about how he may have screwed up someone elses life tells me the kind of good person that this guy is!
@crasherball I know it's true. Sebastian Thrun talks about the incident briefly in Singularity's 'Which way next' Webcast. I just wanted to know if he was paid for it. Because the ways he talks about the car and the number of times he emphases on 'Mercedes' kinda makes the ad seem like a puff piece.
@vikram360 Of course he didn't get paid for it. He just wanted to share the real life experience from beginning of January 2011 and show his appreciation to us at Mercedes. As he says in the video, he was just thankful that nothing happened to the people in the car(s) in front of him and to himself.
I'll remember that the next time I'm buying a Mercedes. Till then I'll just continue being poor and killing people when I don't pay attention to where I'm driving at 45MPH.
@crasherball I don't know where to begin with this....no one is 100% anything at any time, but I assume you're being rhetorical. I also do not drive 24/7, just as needed, and I pay attention while doing it, I have a 100% success rate of not rear ending anyone.
I didn't say or imply that all accidents are avoidable, but if you wish to not use any of those features in a vehicle, be my guest.
If only Police could have access to this system and give tickets out for wreckless driving. If u actually have to utilze this system...you should not drive. Pay attention.
What happens when you are in a rental car and you expect this system to be there and its not...good night to all involved.
for chris sake, always keep an eye on the street and don't be distracted while driving a 1.5 tons vehicle at 45 mph - not driving a car at all saves lifes
@crasherball wow dude, you should really do something about the way that you approach people. "Are you stupid?" is a pretty easy way to be marked as an Idiot.
I just say: Instead of relying to automated Systems maybe a bit more sanity and attention would help. Im not against automated Systems in Cars in General, but like all of these safety measures you should not say: ah, it's ok, im having ABS/Automated CrashSystem and other stuff, i can eat and make a phonecall while driving.
@crasherball plus: as someone who was hit by a car two times (because the drivers where both ignoring the street) im naturally against cars. It's a) expensive b) ecologically bad c) bad for your health (go for a walk)
Of course, if you live in the countryside, a/b/c weighs against: two hours by train/bus vs 30 minutes by car
Toyota cars...even if you brake they will accelerate and collide..they are magical too..

So, no punishment for bad driving? The car should report to the police automatically. ;-)

Mercedes - saving the rest of us from distracted drivers!
swami1984 2 months ago 3
I guess it couldn't be could based software or it was too late to react.
Android might be a piece of software that may distract drivers due to it's extremely attractive functionality.
Google should be promoting electric cars as a safer way to move (for everybody breathing around anyway).
I'd like to see Android on future car infotainment systems, specially on the Nissan LEAF ;)

@vikram360 of course he was paid
but I dont believe that it was a made up story
I guess Mercedes approached him - and he was willing to do this Ad, because he was thankful towards them
still doesnt mean he'd do it for free ;-)

While this truly is inspiring, very, very few people can afford a car that is priced higher than the average value of a house in the US.
I just hope this feature makes it to everyone elses cars a lot sooner than seat belts did (29 years from commercial availability to law in the US).

@Taalanos are you serious?
so I'm guessing you are 100% there when ur driving a car? 24/7?
if all people were like you, we wouldnt need airbags, or seatbelts or even auto body

@macvicar24 why would the police want to know who potentially would have had an accident if it wasnt for that safety system?
its not like they fine them for something they potentially would have done if it wasnt for the car avoiding it
thats like pre-crime in minority report lol

great, one more proof that Mercedes drivers just don't know how to drive. If you see a mercedes, stay far behind!!

@nhitze what?
people shouldnt drive cars at all because they're dangerous?
are you stupid?
thats like saying: "computers can be hacked, lets not use computers at all"
its just a moronic statement!
everything can be potentially dangerous! I could cut myself with my kitchen knife today - does that make me stop from buying kitchen knives?
maybe i should just cut meat with a spoon from now on - just to be safe....
but there is still the potential of me poke my eyes out with a spoon....
