  • that horn sure can fart lol

  • Now try a different mouthpiece :D

  • i can only play that low on trombone :o

  • @chucknorrisminecraft I can only play that low on flute :o

  • Somebody's had some practice.

  • how do you hit those extreme high notes? wow thats just amazing :)

  • I never thought the french horn had any chance of sounding good until now. :P

  • You have inspired me :')

  • Nice helicopter at pedals :D Very good ;)

  • Wait....did you lay your horn on the valves?

  • Wow you're amazing

  • haha that last note was awsome

  • Also, I thought I was good. My range is about 4 octaves (D below bass to D above treble clef, roughly). Crap. I need to work at that some more now.

  • Couldn't you make that only a 2x pedal F (C really, if going by the traditional harmonic names) on a Bb horn? Or is the first harmonic (considering it's a conical bore instrument, unlike a trumpet, and can play its first harmonic) considered a pedal tone?

  • What size mouthpiece???

  • your lip trills are incredible!!

  • Beautiful :)

  • How many octaves is that? =P I cant really tell... I know that I can hit 6 octaves, though, which I'm pretty proud of.

  • great talent!

  • 0:36 it was so low it screwed up the camera lol

  • Exactly how much lower is a triple pedal F than a F in the staff?

  • @WackidWally2

    4 octaves

    mid f

    low f

    ped f

    2x ped f

    3x ped f

  • @horn1palmer wtff i can only hit a double pedal f faking it...youre insane

  • damn... your good... i can currently work my way up to a double high F and i can just hit a double high Bb, but thats not really helpful for playing or anything... but dude! you can work all the way to a double high C!!! and then that triple low F... i feel ashamed of my self for thinking i could play high and low now...

  • what type of mouthpiece are you using in this?

  • nice dude...ive gotten a double high A a few times, and i can get down to the low F# on a good day. my teacher showed me the double high C and i'm jealous :( but im working on it :D

  • I play tuba, and I can't reach that last one. Nothing below pedal Ab really comes out. MUST PRACTICE!!!

  • im 11, started french horn (double) 2 months ago, and i can hit a high e. oh yeah, you know im good

  • @fatalus553 Lies. You're probably thinking of the middle octave e. I'm 12 and I've been playing in band and taking lessons from my local orchestra's principle horn player for about 6 months while maintaining 1st chair and I can only hit the 2nd highest octave A.

  • @FMdog10 i've tried and ive only done it like 3 times.

  • @fatalus553 ooh. that makes more sense..

  • @FMdog10 rofl

  • @FMdog10 Brass instruments have an infinite range. By second highest octave A you mean? Double A?

  • @zacharylindsey81 Ah, my bad, I meant the high A, or double A....now I can get a Bb!

  • @FMdog10 It's all good.

  • @FMdog10 I mean double A. Now I can hit a Bb(:

  • 0:38 farting lol oD

  • DAMN. I can only get a high C above the F on the staff. But I can go as low as pedal tone Dflat below the bass clef F.

  • WTF HOLY CRAP MAN UR GOOD!!!!

  • I remember being amazed by this video like 4 years ago when I was just starting horn... I now have about the same range, minus the super-fast chromatic XD

  • @klo1024

Today I just hit an Eb above triple high c. Btw

  • @horn1palmer I'm on a triple High D lol but it BARELY comes through haha

  • @horn1palmer If you can a note that high, post a vid of it!

  • @horn1palmer beginner here, for just 4 months and i can easily hit E and F and G, jut need a good teacher

  • hola shit dude

  • D: Dear God, man! No human should be able to do that!

  • i have to say that is a very impressive range but i think i'm going to have to say that you were flat on your high C If i'm correct you only got an A. still impressive. and you low F was sharp. i believe you only got a G. But still really impressive if you actually those notes and didn't fake it with you voice. which has been done

  • so awesome :)

  • LOL ur sweating

  • Wow...I just started this year and the highest I can play is high g.

    Lucky. lol jk

  • YOU NEVER LEAVE YOUR FRENCH HORN JUST LYING ON THE GROUND LIKE THAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @yellowpigsroc4 well if your just going to turn on the camera i think that its safe to leave the horn on the ground.

  • is that a triple or a double horn?

  • complimenti per la tue estenzione veramante sbalorditiva .

  • That's insanely awesome!!! "A little impressive?" That's what I call some unrealistic modesty.

  • Puffing your cheeks is usually bad, however to play in the sub-harmonic range you do what you can.

  • wow =]

  • oh gosh ur awesome x.x

i really need to expand my range of playing :T

  • What mouthpiece and horn did you use on this video?

  • What have you found to be the best techniques for playing cleanly in the higher register?

(I ask this because I will be Horn 1 for BWV 79, which calls for me to get up to a 2nd ledger line C above the treble staff regularly.)

  • Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaang I ply frnch horn in band and THAT was VERY impressive cotrol. I would have been dipping the notes like crazy!!!!!!!!!!

  • nice vid. You have amazing control to be able to do that perfectly in one shot. Niiiiiiiice

  • Holy cow!!!

  • I play mello! hehe and french horn. I love them both! :)

  • Wow. I just started horn a year ago and I can go down into the first bass clef a and the second b above the lines:] your really good though!

  • friking awesome

  • how do u play the last note???????? i can play the third low octave c from the space c, how did u do that?

  • he played it by rolling his tongue

  • oh, and bands still march with french horns for the record.

  • yup.their called mellphones.i play it during marching season:D...Still not as good as the dallas brass which my school got to play with...-omg- breathes slowly.dallas brass are soo freakin amazing.haha sorry random.XP

  • wow. so you have about a two octave range on me...that's intense.

and, for the conversation down here, the mellophone and marching french horn are deffinately different. mello is used to march with over a marching horn mainly because marching horns are too expensive. mello's can play a horn part, so they are more widely used. and horns are way better, because a. they sound better. b. have a bigger range. c. don't look like gay trumpets, and d. aren't way easy to play like a mello.

  • ....this makes me feel really bad about myself

  • Trochu namistrovaný, ale jinak dobrý

  • the last one sounded like a fart lol

  • I put in about 30-60 hours a week or so. I know that's a big range, but sometimes I overbook myself.

  • u should do the seigfried horn call

  • i play french horn in middle school band and i have trouble getting to a high f on the double horn

  • that was really good i play french horn in a middle school band but i can only get to the high A. On a mellophone ( a marching french horn) i can get to a high C but thats only because its has a bigger mouth peice like a trumpets

  • a mellophone is not a marching french horn, it's a mellophone. There is such a thing as a marching french horn, they're much bigger than mellos and most prefer mellos over them.

  • yes, but considering the marching horn seems pretty uncommon (I've never heard of it at least), most horn players use the mello for marching. I think it would be safe to call the mello the marching alternative to the horn if anything.

  • yes it is a marching french horn

it is used to replace th french horn in a marching band because of th direction of which a french horn directs th sound. and a mello sounds much better

  • Go to google images. type in marching french horn. then type in mellophone. compare the pictures. they are OBVIOUSLY different. I am arguing that they are different instruments, i am not arguing that the mellophone is the instrument many band directors choose to use instead of a marching french horn.

  • try usiing an adapter then u can use ur french horn mouth piece and its sounds like a french horn instead of an enlargered trumpet

  • That was awesome!!!

  • Impressive!

  • you fracked the top line f on the ascending chromatic scale. lol

  • hey that was really cool. im a trombone player and i cant go down that low. how hard is it to go down that low with a small moutpiece?

  • It's not hard, you just have to know the combination.

  • do you need a lot of practice to reach up that high

  • I've played horn for nine years, and I have never heard anyone do THAT! lol

    Mad props.

  • wouldn't the lowest note be an f sharp since that is the fundamental frequency of the horn?

  • Good question.

I bent the note a half step lower to the f natural.

  • I play trombone and I have around the same range as you do...but you sound way more distinct with the F horn lol

  • Wow!! lol I can only play up to my above the staff C# and as low as a triple low Eb! Well, this is my third year thoughs. ^-^

  • That high OR that low? That's really impressive! I have close to the biggest range of any horn player in our town of 12,000 (if not the biggest, but I can only get an octave lower than you can, while I STILL cannot reliably get down to the low C (valved or not) -- and I've been playing for the better part of 30 years! One claim to fame around here: I AM the loudest horn player in town! :-

  • Dude(ette?),

    I'm 28. I don't think I can pass for "school age" anymore.

    Sounds fun though.

  • wait you have a triple frencjh horn? I have a double one but I still only play in F

  • lol, last note sounded like a helicopter....but in a good way :)

  • @stepott No, the last note sounded like a contra bassoon ;)

  • you should change your name to MADNESS!! you ROCK!

  • i can play a that low or lower but not that high

  • in some cases that definitely can be helpful.. for example the triller in the mozart horn concertos..

  • Perhaps you could be a jazz French Horn Player!

  • can't you only get that high with a triple french horn?? i've tried with a double french horn and i got a headache...it didnt get that high X_X

  • Really, the only thing a triple horn would help is add extra partials to the lower side to give it a larger true range, even though its still possible to lip it down where there are no partials. For the high register, however, the extra partials don't make you play higher. The part that makes and controles all of the tone is the lips, so it is confined to what they can do. The partials are close enough together that you probably only need to play what you hear, no fingerings.

  • ooohhhh i see....well...if thats not the case then can putting your hand up the bell help you get higher? ive heard that from a couple of people

  • to some point then it has an opposite affect after you put it to far down and in

  • Are you referring to a triple horn that adds F alto? Because to my knowledge, that raises the harmonic series to make higher notes slot easier due to fewer neighboring open tones.

  • It makes it easier to play, but it doesn't make you play higher.

  • That's a pretty awesome range you have there. On my horn I can only hit from a low C (below my low F) and a C above the staff. I can hit four different C's and all the notes in between, so I probably have a three octave range if I'm not mistaken.

Again, congrats to you and your range.

  • wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! that's just incredible! i didn't knw that was possible!!!! I have so much work to do to do the same^^

    great^^

  • wow that was amazing. but how do u get that low.

  • You sure know how to play

  • how do you get to the 1 1/2 octives below middle c, i have to play it in my solo(bass cleff, space note below the bottem line)

  • damn, a couple more decades n i'll have caught up to u haha

    play the brown note! jk

  • I want your range. I'm in grade 9 and can only get up to the C above the staff on a really good day.

  • Oooh please don't learn sax...

If you're not going into very advanced jazz music it's like the easiest thing ever (my former horn teacher would always call it recorder (those reaaally dull flute type of things) for advanced learners :D

  • you, friend, are very cool.

  • correct me someone if I'm wrong, but I think the mouthpiece of the french horn is still smaller than a trumpet mouthpiece

  • In diameter, yes, but it is way deeper.

  • I am extremely jealous of your range.

  • isnt f above triple high c wat my horn teacher calls a "party trick"? wat ever it is u mastered it!! ive been playing 7 months and i hope to be good as u!!

  • This will appeal to those who know how difficult the french horn is. But to general audiences...

  • omg i would hate to be your next door neighbor! I feel bad for whoever got stuck with you lol!

  • haha, the brown note. Anywho, great range, I was really suprised your ability to maintain a nice tone in the chromatic scale in the higher register. Very nice.

  • HOLY @%&#!!!

  • DAAAAAAYUM. The highest note I've ever busted out on my horn was a high B, just above the first legerline on the treble staff.

Lowest note? D, 4 legerlines below the treble staff, both notes using a size 11 mouthpiece.

Currently I can only barely get high Gs out (just above the last line of the treble staff), I'm thinking mostly due to the fact that my horn is kind of old.

  • The age of your horn has nothing to do with your range.

    Your air speed does, however!!

Keep on practicing. You'll get there!

  • yea, that's true. the more you pinch the worse it gets. less air comes through (obviously, not trying to be a jerk). how many keys does a triple french horn have by the way.

  • A triple horn has the same 3 every horn does, the thumb valve that opens the Bb tubing, and a another thumb valve to get the high f tubing.

  • what state do you live in? texsas?

  • Well Well that's pretty good. Now let's see how you face up to Zbigniew Zuk. He's a freakin' beast. Check him out. He can do that stuff and still make it sound artistic.

  • Hax.

Your embrochure muscles must be able to crush a walnut.

  • hey what kind of mouthpeice was that on im in the process of getting a new one and the range on that one sounded awesome

  • I suggest a denis wick heavytop 5n. It's the best all around mouthpiece I've found. Its $60-70 too.

  • I had my first french horn lesson today =) I'm really excited to be learning it even though its a big change from clarinet. Was it hard for you to start out on?

  • from :40 on it sounds like a huge fart!!! XD LMAO!!!

  • Dang... Makes me want to practice.

  • woah that's tight as hell. I wish I could do half of that half as fast...

  • i've only been playing for almost 3 years, but im really good at the low notes, i can go down to the REALLY low (base clef) A.

  • Wow. your GOOD!

i play french horn three key one thing. and i can't even get the stupid F.i suck at it . ishoulda played the clarinet.=( but i was the only one in grade 6 through out 3 schools.=D

But its really hard too play.

  • that was...... insanity

humour me on how you get that high?

  • im thinking of taking up playing the french horn, and learning it, but im slightly un sure if ill be wasting my time or not, how long will it take to get really good?

And Is it worth all my time to learn?

And is it Easy to learn, or difficult?

    Help!

  • In my opinion the difficulty of playing the horn depends on how good your teacher is, and how hard you work on getting better.

It is most definitely worth your time. It will be the most complex thing you learn in your life, so if you get good at it, everything else will seem easier by comparison. There are always exceptions, but this is what I have found.

  • Thanks, right now im trying to decide wether to play the saxophone or French Horn..

    hmm...

  • Play the horn- would you rather be mixed in with millions of sax players and never get noticed or stand out with the horn? And by the way, no instrument is harder than another; you try just as hard on any instrument to sound the best you possibly can.

  • Gotta love notes that are so low you can hear the individual pressure waves.

With only a little work and an instrument more suited to the task, I bet I could beat that high C. As a converted lead trumpet player, I can hit the high G above the staff like it's nothing, but the instrument's harmonic series completely falls apart right about there. I've been trying to find a descant to test out my high range.

  • how on earth do you get those high notes!

  • would you be kind enough to provide a fingering chart? wherever i look, i can't find the fingerings for such notes. I can play down to a double pedal c, but i want to know the fingerings for lower. and i can't play higher than a high A. I suck at high notes.

  • Don't worry about trying to hit notes you'll never need to hit.

Practice the stuff you need to do, but that you do poorly.

    Invest your time wisely!!

  • I play the french horn too! What you did was so cool. How did you get up that high? Please write me back.

  • Step #1. Work on fundamentals.

    Step #2. Repeat step one.

  • OOO BUURRN!! HAHAHA

  • Damn. Great.

  • Believe it or not, I started out on flute.

  • That's crazy! I've been playing the French horn for about a year and I still mess up the fingering quite a bit, but you seem to have it all down pat! Great job!

  • I guess it is now!!???

  • I have a question for you horn1palmer:

Do you think everyone can achieve the same range with the same ease and musicalities or do you think people have limits? It doesn't matter what cool 'souped up' daily practice routine they use, where they place their embouchure or what horn they play I am just curious if you think everyone has the same physical capability. I ask everyone this question and everyone seems to have varying opinions. Even the PSO players who are pretty standard in many ways.

  • how do you get that high notes? how do you practice it... don´t tell me "using air velocity" because it is more than that man, you're the guy

  • haha that was badass.

  • Dear Horn1Palmer, I`m a junior in highschool french horn player and I DREAM of playing notes only as high as this. Do you have any advice or warmup ideas that would get me to play anything in the double High C range? Thanks.

  • use the james stamp book for trumpet, and extend the exercises beyond what is written. Make sure as you keep getting higher and higher, don't let the sound get thin.

  • so when someone said he can play flute to 5 octaves, he's wrong?

  • If it is a normal flute, it is only capable of 3 octaves. Some people can play about 3.5 octaves, but 5 octaves on a flute is a rediculous lie.

  • how are octaves defined? so is it like 12 chromatic notes=1 octave, but the 13th is the second octave? so if i can play 13 notes, that's 2 octaves?

    thx!

  • Not quite. 13 chromatic notes would be just over an octave.

    2 octaves would be from a low c through a mid c to a 3rd space c (on horn).

  • wow that's an impressive range! I know that when you get up to those extreme high ranges, nearly any fingering will work, but where can i find fingering for notes below the very low c that is on most standard fingering charts?

  • omfg... i can only play down too d flat two octaves below middle c.. bravo

  • where'd the video go??

  • is that a euph in the back ground i love euphs

    and frenchies

  • Yes it is and so do I.

  • Wow. That is amazing. You are amazing. How long have you been playing F. Horn for? I am going into my serior grade in High School and I play Horn, lowest note I can hit is the low F, and highest is the high A, heheh. And even that I can only hit after some serious warming up. You are an inspiration!

  • Thanks!

I've been playing about 12 years now, and I've had this range for about 9 of those years.

It's a real honor to be an inspiration for others. Thanks again!!!

  • WOW! So you got that range after three years of playing?! Did you play any other brass instruments before you started with Horn? How old were you when you started playing? And no problem!
