If he would ve been able to sing this song on Idol no doubt he would ve blown America away. But only if he got to sing the whole song. So you can take the whole ride from beginning to end, Feel the build up. Unfortunately on Idol the songs are chopped up to fit time constraints for television. So I dont think this would ve been the best song for that show. On the show you need to hit hard immediately and get harder by the end of the song. Thats why Yesterday wasnt good for the wild card. I think Von Smith is better, and I agree with the poster who said he needs to get out from under the influence of his family and get rounded out some more. He does have the voice of an angel--with some rough edges, but hopefully he can smooth those out, grow up a bit and come into his own. I am looking forward to buying his albums!

well last year Josiah leming was cut this year Von Smith. Both incredible young singers. Unfurtunately for both, the Idol's production company 19, kind of owns all partecipants including all of the excluded, so to get a record deal becomes more difficult for them as 19 needs a share of the profit. I wish him luck as he really needs it now as talent alone is not enough in the industry, sadly

The thing is, he's a wonderful singer, but a bad stage performer. Maybe it was the pressure, but he choked on idol. He's got the best voice ever, but he needs to find the confidence and presence in front of a camera to relay this message to America. I've read from a comment it has something to do with his mother. Von needs to stand on his own to grow as an artist not be hindered by his mother. I like the fun side of Von while he was in mexico performing with a band. He ran from home during that time.

i didn't know he was a youtube guy until i read the wikipedia entry. fact is though, he didn't sing that confidently and specially on AI. his voice might be good, but his performances weren't that good. and he seems to have no personality when he's on the show. why did none of this come through?

I know if he is using his falsetto or not in this song... he uses falsetto only in these parts - the "be my mother" on 1:24, 2:47, and 4:01; The "alone" on 3:38 and "woh-oh-oh-oh!" on 4:05 are clearly powerful head-tones.

The rest of the high notes are either head-tones or chest-voice!

He really has a wide range of vocals, and very good executions of different techniques on singing..

Nope, he's definetly a countertenor. You can compare it to any countertenor, their timbre match. His full voice stops around D5 and afte that its all falsetto. He just mixes his bridges well so you don't hear the transition, an amazing feat neverhteless.

I love Von's voice so much and have follwed him on here for about 3 years. I'm so annoyed that people keep saying how they don't like him and he's over the top and shouting and screaming and etc...... I kind of like Adam Lambert so I checked him out and in his Hollywood Round audition in the group round he was screaming and shouting and wearing eyeliner and etc... but I liked it! At moments in this song he sounds like George Michael...not sure if that's a good thing. :) But either way, I've seen him live at a local benefit in LA and he brought the pros to their knees and everyone in the audience to their feet. With his voice he could easily be in the top 5 of Idol if he focuses more on songs like this or soulful without being too cabaret. He just needs to remember his power and not overuse or abuse it or it will become cliche.

This is the song he should have sung at the Idol audition. It's a beautiful song, and it would have put his control and power to better use that his rendition of "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" did. That one was all power and little if any finesse. After the audition, I said to myself "Good grief. This is "Star Search" and Sam Harris all over again."
