  • Lovely playing!

  • B! what a man! Great melodic sense also.

  • Up Donegal the Dermot boy!!

lovely stuff lad, and there's no need to play basses when your that class on the keyboard as dermot. I'm sure he can play basses as well as he can keyboard but sometimes it spoils a tune, wise and very handsome playing!

  • Genius.

  • Why did you turn the tap on near the end?

  • @bramstokerful perhaps they needed some water ?

  • this is serious love for trad -

    Thanks for putting this up!

  • To me, for bass it depends on your personal style.

  • Dont know what the bass fuss is. Fiddles, flutes and pipes dont have a bass. The best pipers use the regulators sparingly anyway.

  • Eh...

There were masters, like Willie Clancy and Richard O'Mealy who were more regulator-heavy.

I'll hear Willie Clancy in a few recordings using them a lot, while Richard almost always use the regs as part of his signature percussive rhythm and phrasing.

    Some examples.

  • Very nice melody!

  • Lovely Playing , I like his style

  • Wow!!! :-)

  • Fiddlers and flute players don `t have a bass. Dermot concentrates totally on the tune...that`s what it`s all about. Any of you critics wouldn`t polish his shoes!

  • Accordions do have bass though thats the whole point!

  • ill say this much - the right had makes the tune what it is, but throw in the left hand and you've just added on a hell of a lot to make the sound even better then wat it was b4 u started bass

  • Just to further the bass argument, its almost impossible to FULLY accompany a tune using a 2 row. There just arent enough basses and because they're diatonic they arent right half of the time. For propper accompaniment on a button accordion you need somthing like a Gaelic IV that has the stradella bass system. Dermot is still the best even if he doesnt play the bass

  • technically the best i agree but for heart and soul in the music there is a lot better!!

  • what difference does it make if hes playing the bass or not?? he chose not to, as do most box players! its not a fleadh competition hes playing in here, dermot has nothing to prove by playing the bass on this tune....

  • which, if u read what i actualy say at the end, is what I mean...

  • I agree, he is amazing... but in arguement with the basses...if hes playing in a key that he has no basses for, then why play in that key? why not move it to a key that he has basses to play as well?

  • steve gsr, Dermot Byrne is probably the greatest living tradaccordion player in the world of Celtic music, you should erase your words about him playing his left hand

  • Id say he's best in Irish music. I know a few better traditional scottish players because u kinda need a full bass set for most good Scottish tunes

  • its a briggs, and prob one of the best ones built, as for getting one. dont hold your breath, last i heard the waiting list was 8 years, and thats only if hes in the mood for making them cause i dont think he builds many these days, price would be over 5000 id say.

  • anyone know what make his is? im lookin for a new one and his looks beast.... hope its not too expensive...

  • SteveGSR, as someone who can be considered a greater master of the B/C box than Mr. Byrne here, perhaps you could advise both me and Mr. Byrne on with bass buttons you would suggest for playing in B mixolydian and related keys, as I have only d,g,a,e,c and f basses available.

  • Playing Basses is a stylistic choice, as when playing with an accompanist, as Dermot Byrne usually does, no box players play bass (or at least none would have the bass end amped and audible) so as not to clash with the accompaniment. And in this case, there are no basses available in this key. Please try to hold informed opinions in the future, instead of spouting uninformed nonsense.

  • of course there are basses in this key. mainly C

  • I play a B/C box but unfortunately for most trad irish reels and polka's etc, they are in D or a dor, so the bass that comes already on the box isn't suitable, so i don't play it. The tune sounds the same, even though I haven't mastered the box, but then again, I've been talking for over 35 years and I still say words wrong, or sometimes i don't speak, does that meen I haven't mastered the language either?

  • im sure hes well capable of playing the bass confidently, but chooses not to. i play box too, and bass aint too hard.

  • Man he is SMOOTH

  • Bb Mix-Lydian on a B/C boxSmoothness no less

  • Thanks for that. Nice playing and tune.

  • Dermot is a fantastic player...I just wish he'd use the bass side a little bit.

  • thats exactly what i thought!!!!
