I came to conclusion that they are upper-middle class and Eric is middle class and they are showing their status by other things than house, such as piano lessons for their daughter, expensive holidays (so they can show of in front of other people), expensive dressings and other stupid stuff that people use to show that they are better than someone else.It's very similar to suburbs in USA, not all of them are earning equally but people choose to present them self by different stuffs
